01 - What is a Variable? (Part 1) Learn How to Use Variables in Algebra.
Get more lessons like this at http://www.MathTutorDVD.com
In this lesson, we will learn what a variable is and why they are important in Algebra. A variable is a placeholder for a numerical value. If we don't know what a number is in an equation, we use a variable to represent the number.
Usually we then solve the equation to find out what the value of the variable is. Variables can use any letter of the alphabet. "t" is commonly use for time. "a" can be used for acceleration. "v" can be used for velocity. Generically, we usually use "x" for variables in algebra.

The independent variable is what you manipulate, the dependent variable is the variable you measure, and control variables need to remain constant to insure accurate results.

Picking Good Variable Names When You are Programming
When you are coding, naming things is a surprisingly challenging and important skill! It can have a big impact on the readability of your code which affects things like how long it takes to write, how long it takes to debug problems, and how long it takes someone else to understand your code.
#programming #softwareengineering
In this video I'll walk you through:
- Why naming matters
- Strategies for picking good names
- Examples to help you see the impact names can have
TIMESTAMPS
0:00 Intro
0:30 Name a variable by what it holds - not its type or where you got the data from
1:00 How long should a name be?
3:36 Names for things you compute like averages and counts
5:15 Pitfalls to avoid
6:10 Naming specific types of variables: loop variables, status variables, and temporary variables

Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy is a nonprofit with a mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. When you are coding, naming things is a surprisingly challenging and important skill! It can have a big impact on the readability of your code which affects things like how long it takes to write, how long it takes to debug problems, and how long it takes someone else to understand your code.

8:13 Hungarian Notation
9:00 Why you should avoid uncommon abbreviations
9:40 Designing naming conventions for your team

Variables are used frequently in Javascript and many other coding languages.
In this video, we're going to talk about variables in code.
Variables, just like in Algebra, are when you have a letter or a word and it represents something else.
Here we're doing var x = \Briana\. When we reference \x\ later on, it's going to know that's Briana.
When we console.log(x), it's going to output \Briana\.
But be careful - if we put console.log(\x\), with the x in quotation marks, it will output the letter \x\.
What I want you to take away from this video is that variables exist in code, and you can store everything from a simple string all the way up to a function, all within a simple name.
