The World Hockey Association 2 was a minor professional ice hockey league created at the instigation of the organizers of the proposed recreated World Hockey Association to serve as its development league. The WHA2 teams — some of which had played the 2002–03 season in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League— were all in the southeastern United States. David Waronker was the league's founder and also served as the league's commissioner.
The WHA2 operated in the 2003–2004 season only, after which (due to a falling-out with the parent organization) it was served a cease-and-desist from the WHA and ceased operations. David Waronker was credited with both the founding and collapse of the league. In addition he owned or co-owned all of the teams in the league. Its surviving teams merged with survivors of the South East Hockey League to form the Southern Professional Hockey League for the 2004–2005 season.
Experiments with spark gap transmitters stretch back to 1900. ProfessorEdward Bennett started using the call sign 9XM in 1914. A year later, the call sign was transferred to the University of Wisconsin and used for many experiments in the Physics department. Professor Earle M. Terry managed many of these tests, and he eventually decided that the station should start making regular weather broadcasts. From December 4, 1916 onward, the station transmitted regular reports in Morse code.

How Lichtenstein's "Whaam!" Became a Monumental Symbol of Pop Art
In this episode of The Most Famous Artworks in the World, discover Roy Lichtenstein's serious comic-inspired canvas Whaam! The painting disrupted the art world in the mid-1960s, delivering an enigmatic salvo at both the conventions of artistic expression and the post-war representation of conflict. By reworking a comic book image of an American jet destroying an enemy plane, Lichtenstein blows up audience expectations.

Conserving Whaam! | Tate
Roy Lichtenstein's Whaam! is one of the most popular works in Tate's collection and has been on almost constant display since it was acquired in 1966.
The materials used to create the painting are challenging for conservators, as they don't react well to traditional cleaning methods. Our conservation team have spent months trialling and evaluating different techniques for treating the work.
At last, a ground-breaking gel treatment broadly based on nanotechnology has allowed us to clean the work in a safe and controlled way, for the very first time in the painting's history.
The treatment has been made possible thanks to a new gel created by CSGI Florence. The NANORESTART project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agr...

WHAAM! BLAM! Roy Lichtenstein and the Art of Appropriation Trailer
Along with Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein created the Pop Art movement of the 1960’s, and today his comic-based paintings can fetch more than $150 million. But critics call this world-renowned artist a plagiarist. Few of those who admire Lichtenstein realize the artist directly appropriated his images from the work of comic artists, whose original work went uncompensated and largely unrecognized.
WHAAM! BLAM! (named after two of Lichtenstein’s most famous paintings) focuses upon two of the last living comic artists whose work was appropriated by Lichtenstein. While Lichtenstein’s copies of their artwork reside in the world’s greatest art galleries and sell for many millions of dollars, these comic artists have led relatively unrecognized and austere lives ... and they are not happy. Along with Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein created the Pop Art movement of the 1960’s, and today his comic-based paintings can fetch more than $150 million. While Lichtenstein’s copies of their artwork reside in the world’s greatest art galleries and sell for many millions of dollars, these comic artists have led relatively unrecognized and austere lives ... and they are not happy. They believe that Lichtenstein stole their work. This documentary examines the ethical, legal, and emotional aspects of artistic appropriation, and asks the question: when does inspiration cross the line into plagiarism? This film will not only be of interest to those who enjoy comic art or fine art, but it also presents a timely, intriguing story for a wider audience about the exploitation of the less privileged by more affluent, powerful forces.

By reworking a comic book image of an American jet destroying an enemy plane, Lichtenstein blows up audience expectations.
Celebrating art’s unique power to promote understanding and progress across cultures, Sotheby’s and Citi Private Bank are partnering to present 5 episodes of Most Famous Artworks.
The NANORESTART project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 646063.
