In 1991 Nordstrom announced plans to open its second Chicago area location at Old Orchard. In addition to the 200,000 square foot Nordstrom, Old Orchard also expanded the mall by 100,000 square feet as part of a $200 million expansion. This allowed for an additional 62 stores to open. Following the Nordstrom announcement Old Orchard also announced plans to bring in a fifth tenant: Bloomingdale's. A number of other tenants also underwent renovations, including Crate & Barrel and The Limited. Lord & Taylor relocated and expanded its store in 1993.
The shopping center was completely redesigned in the 1990s, with the addition of a Nordstrom department store in 1994 and Bloomingdale's in September 1995. In 1995, a four-story parking ramp and a movie theatre were added.
It underwent a $50 million expansion and renovation and reopened in late 2007.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6km2), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,443 people, 926 households, and 752 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,797.6 people per square mile (1,473.8/km2). There were 940 housing units at an average density of 1,461.2/sqmi (567.1/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.19% White, 1.15% African American, 0.12% Native American, 1.56% Asian, 0.20% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.74% of the population.
Old Orchard is a neighborhood in Toledo, Ohio that is roughly bordered by Bancroft Street, Secor Road, Central Avenue, and Douglas Road and is bordered by the University of Toledo to the south and the Village of Ottawa Hills to the west.
History
The neighborhood derives its name from the large orchards that existed on the land prior to being developed in the 1920s. It was developed by the B.C. Bowen Co. (one of the founders of the present day Welles-Bowen Realty Company) who is credited with selecting the Old Orchard name. Accounts tell of a large apple orchard near the corner of Densmore and Bancroft and a peach orchard near Pemberton and Middlesex. Mr. Bowen is also credited with selecting the English-sounding street names, although no information exists as to why. One potential explanation is that Mr. Bowen had also developed the Westmoreland neighborhood (about 1 mile east of Old Orchard) around 1917 and selected those street names from areas in Virginia (Mount Vernon, Richmond, Potomac), as the rolling terrain reminded him of that part of the country. This strategy of using quaint street names probably carried over to his next project, Old Orchard.
