How Britain and America LOST 11 DAYS | Gregorian calendar explained | Julian calendar explained
Why did the year 1752 have only 354 days in the British Isles and North America? Why did people in those countries go to bed on the night of 2 September and wake up on the morning of 14 September, despite only a few hours having passed and why have these kinds of time jumps (or lost time if you prefer) happened eighteen times around the world between 1582 and 1924? In this video from History Calling I reveal all, including whether another time jump will occur in the future.
The video will discuss the changes to the calendar made by Julius Caesar, Pope Gregory XIII, the Council of Nicaea and various monarchs and Parliaments around the world and by the end of it I will have the workings of the Gregorian calendar explained to you and even the Julian Calendar explained as well, despite the fa...

Gregorian calendar and Julian calendar - what's the difference?
The Gregorian calendar is internationally the most widely used civil calendar. It is named after Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in October 1582. The calendar spaces leap years to make the average length of the calendar year (365.2425 days) closer to the length of the tropical year (365.2422 days).
The Gregorian calendar is a modification of the Julian calendar. The motivation for the Gregorian reform was to solve the issue of the calendar drifting further away from the equinoxes and solstices—particularly the winter solstice—which occurs on December 22 or 23, on the Julian calendar.

Why Do Some Countries Use Different Calendars?
▶ In this video I talk about the different calendars that exist throughout the world. I explain how, in general, calendars are categorized as either being Solar, Lunar, or Lunisolar; with the first being related to the position of the sun, the second related to the position of the moon, and the third related to both. I list some of the more well known calendars in each of these categories - such as the Chinese calendar, the Hebrew, the Islamic, or the Indian National Calendar - explaining in which circumstances they are used and understanding how most of the world, save a few exceptions, has adopted the Gregorian Calendar as its main civil calendar, using local ones for cultural and religious purposes only.

The video will discuss the changes to the calendar made by Julius Caesar, Pope Gregory XIII, the Council of Nicaea and various monarchs and Parliaments around the world and by the end of it I will have the workings of the Gregorian calendar explained to you and even the Julian Calendar explained as well, despite the fact that it is barely used any more. I’ll show you how people dated letters when the two calendars were in force and tell you once and for all how many days there are in a year, why we have leap years and why the first day of the year used to be 25 March, not 1 January.
We’ll also look at the effects of the switch between the two calendars, from how it affected people’s rent money, to how historical events are now commemorated on the ‘wrong’ day in many cases and the myth of the English calendar riots. As different countries have switched to the Gregorian system however, it has at least meant that people could stop differentiating between old style dates and new style dates on their letters and documents, which they had had to do since 1582.
So get ready for the story of the Julian vs the Gregorian calendar and I hope you enjoy this brief history of time and explanation as to why the calendars changed.
