Description: The Western Zhou was the first half of the Zhou dynasty of ancient China. It began when King Wu of Zhou overthrew the Shang dynasty at the Battle of Muye and ended when the Quanrong nomads sacked its capital Haojing and killed King You of Zhou in 771 BC. The dynasty was successful for about seventy-five years and then slowly lost power. The former Shang lands were divided into hereditary fiefs which became increasingly independent of the king. In 771, the Zhou were driven out of the Wei River valley; afterwards real power was in the hands of the king's nominal vassals.

Human Sacrifice

Procedure:
Selection of Victims: Victims of human sacrifice were often war captives, slaves, or criminals. Occasionally, volunteers or members of the royal family might be chosen for specific high-status rituals.

The Zhou Dynasty, spanning roughly from 1046 BCE to 256 BCE, is a pivotal chapter in the rich tapestry of Chinese history. Its legacy encompasses profound political, social, and philosophical changes that laid the foundation for the great civilization we know today. In this comprehensive exploration, we will embark on a journey through the annals of time to understand the rise, reign, and eventual fall of the Zhou Dynasty.
🕊 **The Mandate of Heaven**: At the heart of Zhou rule was the concept of the "Mandate of Heaven." Zhou rulers claimed to rule by divine right, asserting that they were chosen by the heavens to govern. This ideology influenced governance, as it meant that a ruler who failed to govern effectively could lose the mandate, leading to dynastic changes and the rise of new dynasties.
🏯 **Feudal System**: The Zhou Dynasty was characterized by a feudal system in which the king granted land to nobles in exchange for their loyalty and military service. This system helped the Zhou Dynasty maintain control over vast territories, but it also laid the groundwork for regionalism and fragmentation.
📜 **Classic Texts**: The Zhou Dynasty was a period of great intellectual ferment. It saw the compilation of some of China's most enduring philosophical and literary works, including the "Book of Changes" (I Ching), "Book of Songs" (Shijing), and "The Analects of Confucius." These texts continue to influence Chinese thought and culture to this day.
🔥 **Warring States Period**: As the Zhou Dynasty progressed, it became increasingly fragmented. The latter part of the Zhou era, known as the Warring States Period, saw intense competition among regional states for power. This period was marked by military conflicts, philosophical debates, and the emergence of important philosophical schools, such as Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism.
🤝 **Cultural Exchange**: Despite the political turmoil, the Zhou Dynasty was a time of cultural exchange and technological advancements. Ironworking, for instance, became widespread during this era, leading to significant agricultural and military innovations.
🔚 **End of the Zhou**: The Zhou Dynasty eventually succumbed to internal strife and external threats. The period of the "Eastern Zhou" marked a decline in central authority, and the dynasty fragmented into various states. In 256 BCE, the Zhou Dynasty officially ended when the state of Qin conquered its last remnants, paving the way for the Qin Dynasty and the unification of China.
Join us as we delve deep into the annals of Chinese history to unravel the enigmatic story of the Zhou Dynasty. From its auspicious beginnings to its eventual demise, this journey promises to illuminate the ancient roots of modern China and the enduring legacies left by this remarkable dynasty. Explore the Zhou Dynasty - a saga of politics, philosophy, and profound transformation.

Today's Daily Dose short history film covers the Zhou Dynasty, which was the longest dynasty in China's 3,600-year history. The filmmaker has included the original voice over script to further assist your understanding:
Today on The Daily Dose, The Zhou Dynasty.
Divided into two periods—the Western Zhou from 1046 to 771 BC and the Eastern Zhou from 771 to 256 BC, the Zhou Dynasty followed the Shang Dynasty, although both shared many cultural and religious similarities in their use of ritualistic bronze vessels and the practice of divination during the Bronze Age. Borrowing the Shang Dynasty’s concept of the Mandate of Heaven, which was the belief that the king was divinely appointed by God, the dynasty’s founding ruler, King Wu, at first established a centralized government shortly before his death, prompting Wu’s brother, Dan, the Duke of Zhou to act as regent until Wu’s young son, Chang, was old enough to rule. Writing the now famous I-Ching, the poet/warrior Duke established a decentralized state based on a social hierarchy similar to European feudalism, which prospered despite a steady rise of rebellious noble factions near the end of the Western Period, each wishing to rule for themselves.
Collapsing just before an era known as the Spring and Autumn Period, which saw notable advances in music, poetry and philosophy, the early Eastern Period witnessed the development of the Confucian, Legalist, Mohist and Taoist schools of thought. Moving the capital to Luoyang, the period also saw notable advances in agriculture, education, military organization, Chinese literature and music, as well as political innovations that would lay the foundation for the Qin Dynasty to come. Many famous Chinese writers lived during the Eastern Period at a time known as the Hundred Schools of Thought, including Mencius, Mo Ti, Lao-Tzu and Sun-Tzu.
Facing an ever increasing breakdown of the Imperial Chinese Government—leading many to claim that Zhou emperors had lost the Mandate of Heaven—monarchal weaknesses gave rise to the Warring States Period from 481 to 221 BC, when the seven separate states of China fought one another for hegemony, ending the Zhou Dynasty when the state of Qin proved victorious in battle. The incoming Qin Dynasty rulers soon erased the Zhou’s accomplishment to insure its own primacy, making the 800-year Zhou Dynasty, the longest, continuous dynastic reign in China’s now 3600-year history.
And there you have it, the Zhou Dynasty of China, today on The Daily Dose.

Human Sacrifice
Description: Human sacrifice in ancient China involved the ritualistic offering of human lives to gods, ancestors, or for other ceremonial purposes. This practice was particularly prominent during the Shang dynasty (1600-1046 BC) and was intended to appease deities, ensure favorable outcomes, or honor deceased ancestors.
Procedure:
Selection of Victims: Victims of human sacrifice were often war captives, slaves, or criminals. Occasionally, volunteers or members of the royal family might be chosen for specific high-status rituals.
Ceremonial Context: The sacrifices were conducted during important religious ceremonies, funerals, and the consecration of buildings or tombs. These ceremonies were often elaborate and involved various forms of preparation and purification.
Methods of Sacrifice: Methods varied but included decapitation, strangulation, and live burial. The specific method used often depended on the purpose of the sacrifice and the status of the victim.
Ritual Accompaniments: Sacrifices were often accompanied by elaborate rituals, including music, dance, offerings of food and drink, and the invocation of deities or ancestors. The rituals aimed to ensure that the spirits of the sacrificed individuals would serve or protect the community in the afterlife.
Purpose:
Appeasing Deities: Sacrifices were believed to appease gods and spirits, ensuring their favor and protection over the community.
Ancestral Worship: Human sacrifices were part of ancestor worship, ensuring that the spirits of the deceased were well-cared for and continued to watch over their descendants.
Ceremonial Importance: Sacrifices marked significant events such as the construction of important buildings, royal burials, and major festivals, reinforcing social and religious hierarchies.
Consequences:
Loss of Life: The immediate consequence was the loss of human lives, often including those of individuals who had little to no choice in their fate.
Social Control: The practice reinforced the power and authority of the ruling class, as the ability to conduct human sacrifices demonstrated control over life and death.
Cultural Legacy: While human sacrifice eventually declined, its historical presence influenced later cultural and religious practices, particularly those involving offerings and rituals to honor ancestors.
Historical Context:
Shang Dynasty: Human sacrifice was most prevalent during the Shang dynasty, where it was deeply integrated into religious and royal practices. Archaeological evidence, such as oracle bones and burial sites, indicates widespread use of human sacrifice.
Transition to Animal Sacrifice: Over time, particularly during the Zhou dynasty (1046-256 BC), human sacrifice began to be replaced by animal sacrifice as societal and religious norms evolved.
Decline and Abolition: By the time of the Han dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), human sacrifice had largely been abandoned in favor of more symbolic offerings and rituals.
Human sacrifice in ancient China serves as a reminder of the lengths to which early societies went to ensure divine favor and maintain social order, reflecting both the spiritual beliefs and the harsh realities of life in those times.

China's Only Female Emperor You Would Not Want to Mess With
As China's only female emperor, Wu Zetian worked her way up to a position of power and prominence during the Tang Dynasty, establishing a legacy that would last thousands of years. One of history's most successful and controversial rulers, Wu Zetian married two emperors, birthed a couple more, and got rid of anyone that stood in her way. The line between fact and fiction with Wu Zetian is blurry, but stories about her life and rule are fascinating.

Okay, so this is a bit late considering it came out on Overly Sarcastic Productions on Friday, but it's before the 22nd so I guess that counts as early if you think about it. Welcome to the life story of Wu Zetian, a cold-blooded killer queen guaranteed to blow your mind. She's killed rivals, officials, sons, step-sons, grandsons, daughters-in-law, maybe a husband? She's been heavily vilified since her death so it can be tricky to separate fact from rumor, but in any case you do not want to mess with her.

Life of Emperess Wu Zeitan's Male concubines
Welcome back to 🤪Crazy Histories🤪
Just like most nations, women had little say in rule-making and governance. But sometimes, a woman like Wu Zetian takes power, and the scale tips over. One of the most iconic female leaders from ancient China, Wu Zetian, broke norms when she sat as the only female emperor that ever ruled the nation. In fact, this happened during the earlier days when women were given little to nothing to say regarding nation-building and were restricted from taking positions that allowed them to exercise some sort of power. History reveals that whenever a woman takes charge of a nation, it is not because she was chosen by the people.

With hands-on investigations and access to the treasures of Wu Zetian’s time, this film tries to give a definitive answer to the question: was Emperor Wu an evil tyrant or one of the most successful rulers in all Chinese history?

5:30 You might notice from this picture that there are, in fact, words on it. These were written in the Song and Jin dynasties.
5:32 I have heard alternative explanations for the stele's lack of words. Some say it's because her accomplishments were too grand for words, some say she was so unprecedented that only future generations could begin to approach the subject of her legacy. But personally, it strikes me as akin to damnatio memoriae, though as far as I know she wasn't purged altogether. Here's a smithsonian article supporting that position: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-demonization-of-empress-wu-20743091/

Footnotes:
1:15 This is actually the Mukden Palace in Shenyang, used by the Ming Dynasty. The Daming palace used by the Tang dynasty is unfortunately in ruins, the only reconstructions I could find were of the Tang's forbidden city as a whole, as well as the exterior of the Danfeng Gate.
5:35 I have not read the Zizhi Tongjian and am not an authority on Sima Guang's perspective on Zhongzong and Ruizong
