This region is witnessing a growing number of self-appointed Hindu vigilante groups. Driven by a deep sense of Islamophobia, these groups believe it is their moral responsibility to protect the Hindu religion from the ‘onslaught of militant Islam’. The recent threat by the Islamic State (ISIS) to take over India by 2020 has provoked these fringe groups to intensify recruitment and military training of Hindu youth that they rope in.

The population of Western Uttar Pradesh is composed of a varied set of communities and tribes, including Jats, Rajputs, Kayasthas, Tyagis, Ahirs, Brahmins, Valmikis, Gurjars, Jatav, Kurmis and Rohilla Pashtuns.[7] Brahmins, including Tyagis, constitute 17% of the population.[8]
The unique setup of Western UP arises largely from the dominance of intermediate castes engaged in agriculture like the Brahmins with Tyagis, Jats, Yadavs, Gurjars and Rajputs ,the region in 1980s and 1990s was witness to the sugarcane mafia led by the above mentioned communities.[9][10]
As per 2011 Census, the total population of Western Uttar Pradesh is 71,217,132, out of which 72.29% is Hindu and 26.21% is Muslim.[6] The population in Khariboli region is 29,669,035, (Hindu 59.19% and Muslim 39.17%) and the population of Braj region is 29,754,755 (Hindu 82.78% and Muslim 16%). Muslim population share in eight districts of Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Moradabad, Rampur, Jyotiba Phule Nagar, Meerut and Bareilly has increased from 29.93% in 1951 to 40.43% in 2011. This has been point of contention in politics with demands for population control bill being raised from Hindu groups.
The percentage of Muslims in Western Uttar Pradesh (~26%) is higher than the whole state of Uttar Pradesh(where it is 19.3%).[11][12] Out of 77 assembly seats in this region, Muslim candidates won 26 seats in the 2012 assembly elections.[13] Several communities are bi-religious.[14]
The region's Rohillas are descended from immigrant groups from centuries ago, and a large subregion of Western Uttar Pradesh, Rohilkhand, takes its name from that Pashtun tribe.[15]
Sikhs from West Punjab, who came from Pakistan after partition, also migrated to the area in large numbers.[16]
Thana Bhawan is a small town in Shamli district (formerly part of Muzaffarnagar district) in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. District Shamli is a newly constructed district. Before becoming a new district, it came under district Muzaffarnagar and was well known tehsil of it. It was known as Prabuddhnagar first time, when this district came into focus. It is situated on Delhi-Shamli national highway, it is 100 km away from Delhi, 65 km from Saharanpur, 38 km from Muzaffarnagar and only 38 km away from Panipat (Haryana). Border of this district is connected with district Muzaffarnagar in East and with Harayana in West and with Saharanpur in North and with district Baghpat it is connected in South.It is said that the name Thana Bhawan emerged from the name of Devi Bhawan Temple. In the 18th century it was home to mostly Hindu and Muslims families. It is situated on the Delhi-Saharanpur highway [[NH 709B]] around 120 kilometres (75 mi) from Delhi.

2017 के बाद उत्तर प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ बीते सोमवार को एक बार फिर कैराना पहुँचे थे. पिछले पाँच साल में कैराना के उनके दो दौरे बेहद चर्चा में रहे हैं. पहला दौरा 2017 का था, जब मुख्यमंत्री बनने के बाद वो वहाँ गए थे. और इस बार दोबारा मुख्यमंत्री बनने की हसरत लिए वहाँ पहुँचे हैं. 2017 के चुनाव में यहाँ से हिंदुओं के कथित पलायन का मुद्दा, प्रदेश स्तर पर चुनावी मुद्दा बना. 2022 के विधानसभा चुनाव से पहले उसी 'पलायन' के मुद्दे का 'जिन्न' दोबारा से बोतल से बाहर निकला. क्या इस तरह से बीजेपी पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश का गेमप्लान तैयार कर रही है? देखिए यह रिपोर्ट.
