West Papua or Western New Guinea is part of Indonesia consisting of the western half of the island of New Guinea and smaller islands to its west. The region is administered as two provinces: Papua and West Papua. The eastern half of New Guinea is the country of Papua New Guinea. The population of approximately 3.6 million comprises ethnic Papuans, Melanesians, and Austronesians. The region is predominantly dense forest where numerous traditional tribes live such as the Dani of the Baliem Valley, although the majority of the population live in or near coastal areas. The largest city in the region is Jayapura. The official and most commonly spoken language is Indonesian. Estimates of the number of tribal languages in the region range from 200 to over 700, with the most widely spoken including Dani, Yali, Ekari and Biak. The predominant religion is Christianity (often combined with traditional beliefs) followed by Islam. The main industries include agriculture, fishing, oil production, and mining.
The name Papua was used to refer to parts of the island before contact with the West. Its etymology is unclear; one theory states that it is from Tidore, the language used by the Sultanate of Tidore, which controlled parts of the island's coastal region. The name came from papo (to unite) and ua (negation), which means not united or, territory that geographically is far away (and thus not united).
Ploeg reports that the word papua is often said to derive from the Malay word papua or pua-pua, meaning 'frizzly-haired', referring to the highly curly hair of the inhabitants of these areas. Another possibility, put forward by Sollewijn Gelpke in 1993, is that it comes from the Biak phrase sup i papwa which means 'the land below [the sunset]' and refers to the islands west of the Bird's Head, as far as Halmahera. Whatever the origin of the name Papua, it came to be associated with this area, and more especially with Halmahera, which was known to the Portuguese by this name during the era of their colonization in this part of the world.
Guineai/ˈɡɪni/, officially the Republic of Guinea (French:République de Guinée), is a country in West Africa. Formerly known as French Guinea (French:Guinée française), the modern country is sometimes referred to as Guinea-Conakry in order to distinguish it from other parts of the wider region of the same name, such as Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. Guinea has a population of 10.5 million and an area of 245,860 square kilometres (94,927sqmi).
Guinea is a republic. The president is directly elected by the people and is head of state and head of government. The unicameral Guinean National Assembly is the legislative body of the country, and its members are also directly elected by the people. The judicial branch is led by the Guinea Supreme Court, the highest and final court of appeal in the country.
Guinea is a predominantly Islamic country, with Muslims representing 85 percent of the population. Guinea's people belong to twenty-four ethnic groups. French, the official language of Guinea, is the main language of communication in schools, in government administration, in the media, and among the country's security forces, but more than twenty-four indigenous languages are also spoken.
Guinea is a traditional name for the region of West Africa that lies along the Gulf of Guinea. It stretches north through the forested tropical regions and ends at the Sahel.
Etymology
The etymology of "Guinea" is uncertain. The English term Guinea comes directly from the Portuguese word Guiné, which emerged in the mid-15th century to refer to the lands inhabited by the Guineus, a generic term for the black African peoples south of the Senegal River (as opposed to the 'tawny' ZenagaBerbers, north of it, whom they called Azenegues or Moors). The term "Guinea" is extensively used in the 1453 chronicle of Gomes Eanes de Zurara.
King John II of Portugal took up the title of Senhor da Guiné (Lord of Guinea) from 1483. It is believed the Portuguese borrowed Guineus from the Berber term Ghinawen (sometimes Arabized as Guinauha or Genewah) meaning "the burnt people" (analogous to the Classical GreekAithiops, "of the burned face"). The Berber terms "aginaw" or "Akal n-Iguinawen" mean "black" or "land of the blacks."
The guinea is a coin of approximately one quarter ounce of gold that was minted in the Kingdom of England and later in the Kingdom of Great Britain and the United Kingdom between 1663 and 1814. It was the first English machine-struck gold coin, originally worth one pound sterling, equal to twenty shillings, but rises in the price of gold relative to silver caused the value of the guinea to increase, at times to as high as thirty shillings. From 1717 to 1816, its value was officially fixed at twenty-one shillings. Then, Great Britain adopted the gold standard and guinea became a colloquial or specialised term.
The name came from the Guinea region in West Africa, where much of the gold used to make the coins originated. Although no longer circulated, the term guinea survives in some circles, notably horse racing, and in the sale of rams to mean an amount of one pound and one shilling (21 shillings) or one pound and five pence in decimalised currency. The name also forms the basis for the Arabic word for the Egyptian poundالجنيهel-Genēh / el-Geni, as a sum of 100 qirsh (one pound) was worth approximately 21 shillings at the end of the 19th century.
Indonesia to deploy more troops to troubled Papua region
Indonesia is preparing to deploy hundreds of soldiers to its eastern provinces in an effort to combat separatist groups.
Recent shoot-outs with armed fighters in Papua and West Papua have forced villagers to flee their homes.
There is now concern the government's decision to designate Papuan groups as terrorists may inflame tensions even further.

Inside Indonesia's Secret War for West Papua | Foreign Correspondent
Just north of Australia a secret war is being fought. West Papuan independence fighters and Indonesian security forces are involved in a protracted and bloody battle over the issue of Papuan independence.
The conflict escalated after young West Papuan fighters killed Indonesian road workers building a highway into Papua’s central highlands.
The Indonesia government hit back hard, deploying hundreds of police and military who attacked the region in an effort to root out the rebels.
Last year mass protests broke out, with civil resistance leaders from in and outside West Papua calling for freedom from Indonesia.
With foreign media largely shut out, the story of this unfolding humanitarian disaster remains untold.

Hundreds have died and local officials estimate that over 40 000 people have been displaced. There are allegations of torture and human rights abuses.
Foreign Correspondent has been able to report from inside the conflict zone, gaining access to exclusive pictures of the recent unrest and speaking to eyewitnesses of the violence.
“I have to yell out to the world…because if I don’t, we’re going to be weaker and the indigenous people will be wiped out ”, says one West Papuan highlander who’s looking after children orphaned in the recent fighting.
“We will not retreat. We will not run. We will fight until recognition dawns ” , says a member of West Papua’s young guerrilla force whose ranks include teenagers orphaned in the ongoing conflict.
“Dialogue is needed but dialogue which is constructive”, says Indonesia’s former Security Minister. “We have closed the door for dialogue on a referendum. No dialogue for independence.”
Sally Sara reports on a war with no end in sight.

The Gangs of Papua New Guinea
Police violently battling murderous gangs. Endemic violence, extreme poverty, obscene wealth and corruption on all levels. Welcome to Port-Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
Last summer, a settling of scores between tribal clans left 32 dead. But that is nothing compared to what’s going on in the city. Here the police wage a merciless war against the Raskols gangs. In 2020, Port Moresby was ranked the 2nd most violent capital city in the world, just behind Caracas, Venezuela.
Women in particular pay a high price for this violence. 80% of men admit to beating their wives regularly. One in two women will be raped during their lifetime. There are only a few shelters they can turn to and their attackers are rarely prosecuted.
Corruption is also rife and for those with the right connections, PNG is ...

Deadliest Journeys - Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea is one of the world's last lawless lands lying 150 kilometres north of Australia. The town of Lae is the economic capital of the country here it more commonly goes by the name "Pothole city".
It's a sorry sight with its battered roads it's packed mini buses and it's extreme levels of poverty. In the streets uncertainty reigns and the police are ineffective trying to keep law and order the locals call upon private security companies.
Papua New Guinea has one of the highest crime rates on the planet. Papua New Guinea is an island half as big as France but with a road network that practically does not exist. There are just 3 main roads that are barely tarmac and yet road transport is vital for the country.

A new hope for Papua New Guinea’s economy, but challenges abound
Papua New Guinea is embarking on a new international trade and investment programme to boost its economy, but challenges stand in the way of its ambitious plan. Despite being rich in natural resources, a large segment of its population lives in poverty. Social problems such as corruption and economic mismanagement remain. Roger Maynard reports.

America Vs Japan: The Struggle For New Guinea | Battlezone | War Stories
The New Guinea campaign was a key element of the Pacific War with lots of island hopping. The Japanese lands on the island and entrench themselves there early in 1942. They attack Milne Bay with an amphibious force, but they are beaten back by allied forces. Australian forces drive across the mountainous island and eventual meet up with U.S. soldiers. Slowly, they move through the northern part of the island defeating the Japanese at Lae and the Bismarck Sea.

Corruption is also rife and for those with the right connections, PNG is an El Dorado. Thanks to its rich mineral deposits, the capital has experienced an unrivalled real estate boom in the past 10 years.

🌏 About OzGeographics
OzGeographics is an Australian-based Youtube channel that releases videos in an easy-to-digest format. We primarily release content that covers topics within the realm of Earth Sciences or natural disasters. Still, we also release the odd video here or there that delves into other sciences or other topics altogether, depending on how compelling we find the topic at hand.
Our videos are catered for anyone and everyone, and our goal is to attempt to explain hard-to-understand events in an easy-to-digest manner that isn't too "dry" in its presentation.
We strive to explain hard-to-understand scientific phenomena in a way that isn't too boring or hard to understand so that people from all backgrounds can understand, learn, and appreciate this content and what we are discussing to a greater extent.
#papuanewguinea #volcanoes #ulawun #mountulawun #volcano #volcanoeruption
In this video, we delve into the recent eruption of Mount Ulawun, Papua New Guinea's most active volcano. Located on New Britain Island, the eruption has sent ash plumes soaring to heights of 50,000 feet, impacting local aviation and highlighting the risks posed by this significant natural event. We cover the latest developments, including the evacuation efforts and flight cancellations, providing insights into the challenges faced by the half-million residents of New Britain. This video offers a comprehensive overview of Mount Ulawun's eruption, its implications for the Pacific Ring of Fire region, and the ongoing response to this volcanic activity. Join us as we explore the dynamics of this powerful natural occurrence and its effects on the local and broader community.

1:54 Papua New Guinea's dangerous highways and high crime rate make it a challenging place for truck drivers.
7:02 Kevin, a truck driver in Papua New Guinea, faces dangerous road conditions and relies on betel nuts to stay awake during his long journeys.
13:51 A truck driver in Papua New Guinea faces obstacles and extortion on his 20-hour journey home.

I've made it safely to my 134th country - PAPUA NEW GUINEA! The last 48 hours here in PNG have been nothing short of incredible. I am truly amazed by how culturally and linguistically diverse Papua New Guinea is -- 12% of all the world's spoken languages are here! And not to mention, the stunning landscapes of green mountains, rolling foothills and white sanded beaches.
It's like an unexplored wonderland, and I couldn't be happier to be here right now! Papua New Guinea is the world's last frontier.
I got in touch with a friend of a friend, Bruce, who has let me crash at his place and he has driven me all over the country. This video gives you an inside look at my perspectives of Papua New Guinea and some of the interesting things I've learned so far about this remote country.
Have you ever been to Papua New Guinea? Have any other tips of things to see/do while here?

The New Guinea campaign was a key element of the Pacific War with lots of island hopping. The Japanese lands on the island and entrench themselves there early in 1942. They attack Milne Bay with an amphibious force, but they are beaten back by allied forces. Australian forces drive across the mountainous island and eventual meet up with U.S. soldiers. Slowly, they move through the northern part of the island defeating the Japanese at Lae and the Bismarck Sea.

Guinea Conakry: Life on the Edge | Deadliest Journeys
In Guinea Conakry, at the wheel of their truck, Mamady and her sons face torrential downpours which make the track nightmarish. The abundant rains and the 1,300 streams and rivers that run through the country gave it its nickname: the water tower. However, running water is rare in the country and, to have access to it, it is sometimes necessary to install giant cisterns. Transporting these tanks by bush taxi over the rutted tracks is no easy task. After the palm oil harvest, which provides a minimum of income for residents, only motorcycles can transport the precious liquid. Loaded with dozens of cans, they set off on chaotic tracks on which anything can happen.

Getting Guinea Pigs | Best of Peppa Pig | Cartoons for Children

Corruption is also rife and for those with the right connections, PNG is an El Dorado. Thanks to its rich mineral deposits, the capital has experienced an unrivalled real estate boom in the past 10 years.

Rebels in Indonesia’s West Papua region have released a video of New Zealand pilot, Phillip Mehrtens, in which he tells his family he loves them and is being treated well by his captors. Mehrtens, an Air Susi pilot, was taken hostage by the West Papua National Liberation Army a year ago as a bargaining chip for its push for independence from Indonesia

Indonesia's two easternmost provinces of Papua and West Papua, known internationally as the territory of West Papua, have recently been racked by civil unrest. Thousands of people across the region have joined rallies to protest racial discrimination. VOA'S Alam Burnahan looks at the root of the conflict.

West Papua is home to Asia’s largest remaining rainforests, indigenous communities and unique species.
But this exclusive 101 East investigation reveals how Korean-run companies are allegedly engaging in questionable deals as they buy up forests to develop palm oil plantations.
Featuring rare access to a restive Indonesian province usually off-limits to journalists, we meet tribesmen who allege that Posco International and Korindo are plundering their land for a pittance.
Both companies deny all allegations including fraud and human rights abuses.
Selling Out West Papua was produced in collaboration with Mongabay, The Gecko Project and the Korea Centre for Investigative Journalism.

The battle for West Papuan independence from Indonesia has been described as the secret war on Australia's doorstep.
The restive region is off limits to journalists, so very little information gets out.
But Foreign Correspondent reporter Sally Sara has rare access, finding the conflict has escalated and there's video evidence of a humanitarian disaster.

West Papuan civilians have been killed and injured during a clash with Indonesian security forces in a remote central highlands village, while tensions continue to escalate in the region.

Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea and Papua New Guinea are all called Guinea to some degree. But what led to this happening? Why are there four modern nations called Guinea? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

Corruption is also rife and for those with the right connections, PNG is an El Dorado. Thanks to its rich mineral deposits, the capital has experienced an unrivalled real estate boom in the past 10 years.

Corruption is also rife and for those with the right connections, PNG is an El Dorado. Thanks to its rich mineral deposits, the capital has experienced an unrivalled real estate boom in the past 10 years.
