Chris Rea - West Africa (Blue Guitars, Album 1, Beginnings)
Chris Rea - West Africa, Instrumental, Blue Guitars - Album number One – Beginnings, 2005.
Blue Guitars is a Blues album released by Chris Rea on October 14, 2005, consisting of eleven CD's, one DVD and a full-colour book, including paintings by the artist, liner notes, and song lyrics.
The album is an ambitious project with the 137 songs recorded over the course of 1½ years with a work schedule - according to Chris Rea himself - of twelve hours a day, seven days a week.
Initially, the project was inspired by Bill Wyman's "Blues Odyssey" and can be called an "odyssey" in its own right, for depicting a journey through the various epochs of Blues Music, starting at its African origins and finishing with modern-time Blues from the 60s and 70s.
Subsequently the eleven CD's are titled th...

"The resurgence of interest in uncovering the roots of Black New World cultures has led to a refocusing of attention on the traditional cultures of West Africa. While an extensive literature has been amassed on the Yoruba of Western Nigeria and the Fon of Dahomey, relatively little attention has been paid to an equally important group, the Ewe of South Eastern Ghana. The Ewes are known throughout West Africa for their highly sophisticated traditional drum and dance styles which present polymeter and cross ("hot") rhythms in one of their most advanced forms. These recordings offer a cross section of Anlo Ewe traditional drumming, from social and recreational to ritual and cult music.
The Anlo Ewe, occupying the Guinea Coast from Anloga to Aflao, are to be distinguished from the Ewes of the Northern Volta Region (e.g. Kpando). The culture of the northern Ewes has, over the years, been deeply influenced by Akan culture (impinging from the immediate west), and many Ewes consider Anlo to be the only repository of pure Ewe tradition.
As is typical of much of West Africa, musical performance in Anlo plays a central role in nearly every aspect of traditional life, and is particularly crucial in ritual and cult events. Although it is not strictly accurate to speak of the religious as opposed to the secular in West African cultures (since literally every event is invested with a spiritual character), it is appropriate to draw a line between those ritual activities leading to direct contact with the supernatural (e.g. cult events) and those social and recreational activities where spiritual phenomena, though present, are not the central focus of the event. It is along these lines that the material on this record is divided; Side One presents the dances of a more recreational character and Side Two is devoted entirely to the ritual music of the Blekete Cult.
The recordings on Side One were made at Medina, a small village near Accra. The music is performed by a group from Aflao, led by master drummer George Yao Atoklo, The recordings on Side Two were made at the shrine of Osofo Kowu Zigah, one of the oldest, most renowned Blekete priests in S.E. Ghana. The master drummer recorded here is Mawuko Kwami Kuko."

Everywhere, from time immemorial, the Word has been embodied by the bard, the troubadour, the griot. These wordsmiths, at once messengers and peacemakers, are the links with the forces of nature, the inexpressible divine, the memory of the ancients. It falls to them to maintain the realm of the collective soul.
Nowadays, these freethinkers and travellers are making the world their garden… like Kiya Tabassian, the virtuoso of Persian setar and Ablaye Cissoko, griot from Saint-Louis, Senegal, both eternally migrating birds. This meeting between Ablaye and Constantinople, between strings and vocals, goes back in time to evoke the beauty of being. It is a joint passage through the common sites of the imagination, like a long breath before the inexorable march of the world and time.

Woman power from Mali - Fatoumata Diawara live in concert at the 30th Africa Festival Würzburg in 2018. Please note that all rights are reserved. Any copy or download of the concert is strictly prohibited.
Her debut album ´Fatou´ (2011) featuring the hit “Sowa“ conquered the charts of the world music scene. She was the lead of several movies and theatre plays. Her last projects were the collaboration with Cuban musician Roberto Fonseca (”At Home“ / 2015), the fusion album “Lamomali“ (2017) with French rock musician Matthieu Chedid, as well as the documentary “Mali Blues“. Last year she performed on stage at the Africa festival with Tuareg Ahmed Ag Kaedy, one of the protagonists from this movie. By popular request we have invited the fighter for the rights of women in Africa again to make the festival tent boil. In 2013 she received the Africa Festival Award.

Subsequently the eleven CD's are titled the following: "Beginnings", "Country Blues", "Louisiana & New Orleans", "Electric Memphis Blues", "Texas Blues", "Chicago Blues", "Blues Ballads", "Gospel Soul Blues & Motown", "Celtic & Irish Blues", "Latin Blues" and "60s & 70s".
Album number one – Beginnings
The first album of this set deals with the very beginnings of the Blues, tracing its ways back to its African roots.
Living conditions were hard, many African natives were taken captives and transported across the ocean to be sold as slaves, sometimes even betrayed by their own people, which is vividly depicted in the song "The King Who Sold His Own".
All in all it was an environment, where it was only natural for the Blues to develop, and even though the instrumentation and the construction of the songs was still very different from what we now know as Blues, the basics were already there: the sadness, the strain, the burdens, the depression, the feeling of "blue" and – of course – the underlying musical structure.
Track list:
" West Africa
" Cry for Home
" The King Who Sold his Own
" White Man Coming
" Where The Blues Come From
" Lord Tell Me It Won't Be Long
" Work Gang
" Praise The Lord
" Sweet Sunday
" Sing Out The Devil
" Boss Man Cut My Chains
This video has been published with absolute respect and admiration to Chris Rea's music !
