The Secrets Of Wells Cathedral | The First Gothic Cathedral In England
Join Alice Loxton as she unveils the secrets of Wells Cathedral, getting up close and personal with all aspects of the building's history. Among other things, that means abseiling down the cathedral's facade - not for the faint hearted!
Also in this video, we’ll be getting inside the mind of a medieval mason, we’ll be uncovering the mysteries of the magnificent chained library and we’ll be traversing stones which are so weathered by time that they have been compared to a rolling ocean.

England's 'hidden' medieval street | BBC Global
In the lush, rural landscape of Somerset, England is the cathedral city of Wells.
It's an ancient place that is also home to one of Europe's oldest continually inhabited streets.
Vicars' Close was created in the mid-14th Century to be the communal home of Vicars Choral - Wells Cathedral's male choir, first founded in 1100.
Despite technically being a public road, the historic homes and buildings in the Close have remained virtually off-limits to visitors since the medieval period.
Now a new conservation project hopes to throw open some of its doors to visitors.
And in the process, help save the fabric of Vicars' Close for generations to come.

Wells Cathedral Tour
I’m so excited to share this video that I waited ages to film and finally have had time to edit! Wells Cathedral is famous for its “scissor arches” and its amazing Chapter House, and the stunning Lady Chapel. It is a beautiful building inside and out, and full of interesting details.
I’m very grateful to our “cousin” Mark Dyer for his expertise and generosity in narrating this tour! Our visit to Wells cathedral would not have been nearly so informative and enjoyable without him as our tour guide!
Next week I’ll share my vlog of Wells City Centre, including the Vicars’ Close, Bishop’s Palace, St. Cuthbert’s church and more locations around Wells. And stay tuned for our visits to some super CHEESY Somerset locations as well!

Because cathedrals took so long to build, the fashions often changed whilst they were being built. So, Durham Cathedral, for example, has rounded Romanesque arches at one end and pointed Gothic at another. But at Wells, the fashions stayed the same throughout the building process, so it was built in the Gothic style all the way through, and so this building is the first truly Gothic cathedral in the world. The nave here is quite plain, in Early English Gothic style.
