Conor Oberst | Broken Record
Conor Oberst's music is dynamic, deeply smart, captivating, funny, and sometimes biting. His extensive catalogue dates back to the early '90s and includes music with Bright Eyes, Desaparecidos, the Mystic Valley band, the Faint, Commander Venus, Monsters of Folk, a collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers, and of course his solo material.
On today's episode Justin Richmond and Conor Oberst discuss Conor's deep catalogue, and Conor recalls how he got his start by sending valentines to his favorite indie labels. He also explains how he was able to build an independent musical movement in his native Omaha, Nebraska.

Ouija - Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes)
Ouija - Conor Oberst & LYRICS. From the album "Water" in 1993 when he was 13. Conor is in a band called Bright Eyes.
OUIJA
A natural noise
Is free in the air
Trying so hard
to give the whole block a scare
And that voice so true in my ear
I go next door just to be near to it
Practice is done
Go outside for a smoke
Listen to some more of Porter's jokes
No more now man
Please turn it down
Because if you don't we all might bust a gut
(yeah yeah)
We just might bust a gut
Words don't quite explain
EVERYTHING I'M TRYING TO SAY
I don't know where to go
I GUESS I'LL JUST ASK THE OUIJA BOARD
It doesn't know
EVERY INCH OF ME IS A GUN
About to go off
I FEEL MYSELF I'M FALLING RIGHT IN
Guys we'll be alright
We sit and talk
For most of the night
Another cool game with ...

Conor Oberst: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Conor Oberst's new album has fast become my favorite of the Bright Eyes singer's solo projects, so having him come to NPR and perform a few of these songs at the Tiny Desk was especially exciting. His backing band for this tour is the roots-rock group Dawes, which has a huge following in its own right.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory—maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations—in a world without liner notes—for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

We just might bust a gut
Words don't quite explain
EVERYTHING I'M TRYING TO SAY
I don't know where to go
I GUESS I'LL JUST ASK THE OUIJA BOARD
It doesn't know
EVERY INCH OF ME IS A GUN
About to go off
I FEEL MYSELF I'M FALLING RIGHT IN
Guys we'll be alright
We sit and talk
For most of the night
Another cool game with the strobe light
And that's not all there's something I lack
Dirty little boy is a lumberjack.
(tonight)
Clint's really cool and
I don't mean to hurt
But that really is a star chopping shirt
Oh no no man
The lynch man's attacking again
Good thing we have a psychotic like friend
Oh yeah
To eat some heads for us
Words don't quite explain
EVERYTHING I'M TRYING TO SAY
I don't know where to go
I GUESS I'LL JUST ASK THE OUIJA BOARD
It doesn't know
EVERY INCH OF ME IS A GUN
About to go off
AS I TRY TO HOLD MYSELF DOWN
Guys we'll be alright
You guys are so good
but you think you suck
For the last time
My brothers not a big Hessian
Yeah here comes Dale
Just pulled up in his bus
I'm in love with Lisa from Toys 'R' US
'Cos Lisa's straight edge
The rest of you aren't
Offer us a joint
But we're too smart to begin
Yeah it sure means a lot
To have you guys here
To light up dead smoke
And bring Porter a beer

Conor Oberst's new album has fast become my favorite of the Bright Eyes singer's solo projects, so having him come to NPR and perform a few of these songs at the Tiny Desk was especially exciting. The new music on Upside Down Mountain contains the sort of personal songwriting that got me loving him in the first place. His backing band for this tour is the roots-rock group Dawes, which has a huge following in its own right.
At the Tiny Desk, Dawes brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith joined in on beautiful harmonies, guitar and some light percussion. It was an especially sweet day — a rare weekend Tiny Desk Concert that had friends and families present, including Oberst's wife (Corina Figueroa-Escamilla) and his father Matthew.
Oberst actually began making music on his dad's four-track cassette machine more than 20 years ago. Now 33, Oberst seems much happier, if his songs are any indication. You may even see that on his face as he performs these stripped-down and soulful songs on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. --BOB BOILEN
