In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Hill like this:
History
In the Domesday Book, Hill is recorded as Hilla, then later between the years of 1250 to 1455 is referred to frequently as Hulla. It was not until after 1773 until it was more commonly known as Hill.
Industry and social structure
Census data dating back to 1831 shows that the principal industry in Hill has been agriculture, accounting for approximately 75 percent of the workforce in 1831.
Gloucestershire is a historic county mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in the 10th century, though the areas of Winchcombe and the Forest of Dean were not added until the late 11th century. Gloucestershire originally included Bristol, then a small town. The "local" rural community moved to the port city, (as Bristol was to become) and Bristol's population growth accelerated during the industrial revolution. Bristol became a county in its own right, separate from Gloucestershire and Somerset in 1373. It later became part of the administrative County of Avon from 1974 to 1996.
The constituency consisted of the historic county of Gloucestershire, excluding the part of the city of Bristol in the geographical county. Bristol had the status of a county of itself after 1373. Although Gloucestershire contained a number of other parliamentary boroughs, each of which elected two MPs in its own right for part of the period when Gloucestershire was a constituency, these were not excluded from the county constituency. Owning property within such boroughs could confer a vote at the county election. This was not the case, though, for Bristol.
The Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling championship 2018 took place on Monday, and these are the worst falls caught on camera.
The Gloucestershire Cheese roll is a famous tradition that takes place on Cooper's Hill once a year.
The bonkers event has been taking place since the 1800s.

Thrills and spills as Cheese Rolling 2023 leads to MULTIPLE injuries in Gloucestershire, UK
Footage of the annual cheese rolling event in Brockworth, Gloucestershire, this afternoon (May 29). Dozens of thrill seekers from all over the world threw themselves down the steep Cooper’s Hill to chase a wheel of cheese. There were several injuries reported. One senior police officer said last week there was the risk of "mass casualties" if something went wrong. But the quirky event, which has no official organisers, still went ahead.
It sees competitors chase a 7lb (3kg) Double Gloucester down the steep 200-yard drop, many tripping and tumbling as they go.

In the rolling countryside near Gloucester, England, stands the now-famous Cooper's Hill. One day each spring, people send large wheels of artisanal Double Gloucester cheese down the hill at speeds up to about 70 miles per hour. Chasing each wheel is a pack of contestants. Some of them roll, while others just fall over. Long a contained, local affair, over time the Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake (meaning festival) started drawing international crowds to watch or compete in this seriously risky game. In the May 2018 event, Chris “King of the Hill” Anderson set the all-time record, with a career total of 22 cheese wheels. Ending the day without mishaps, although the longtime cheese racer has been injured in past years. And Flo Early, winner of the 2018 women's competition, did dislocate her shoulder. No longer officially supported because of increased crowds, the cheese race continues on its own momentum.

Brutal footage of people throwing themselves down Cooper's Hill at the annual cheese-rolling contest in Brockworth, Gloucestershire, England. The bizarre tradition sees brave men and women risk injury to chase a piece of cheese down a hill. The festival dates back to the 1800s and takes place every late May Bank Holiday.

This is second part of my hike over the Gloucestershire Hills from Huntley Hill to May Hill where I have been told I will seen seven counties. On the summit of May Hill I have been advised there are 99 planted trees. Will I find them?

Four wheel drive vehicles, buses, police cars, and SUVs struggled as heavy snow hit Gloucestershire today (December 11). Footage taken at Leckhampton Hill in Cheltenham shows several accidents caused by the icy conditions which brought around 10 inches of snow. #Gloucestershire #Cheltenham #snow

Cheese Rolling at Cooper's Hill, Gloucestershire, England - 2015.
I couldn't resist another visit after my 'debut' at this crazy event last year. I thought I had a good position for filming, when a seven-foot-tall white-haired man suddenly appeared in front of me, and then proceeded to start filming with the world's biggest tablet, thus spoiling my view!
Here's my video of last year's event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmnjHu4PwGc

I am on a hike through Gloucestershire. I am starting near Huntley, a small town off the A40, and north of the Forest of Dean, climbing the hill named after it and then over the summit towards May Hill to the north. From there, so I am told, I will see seven counties from one vantage point. I was told this by a local and I am intrigued, so off I pop on this wonderful walk. Join me to view the sights.

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Hill like this:
