Phalanx CIWS Close-in Weapon System In Action - US Navy's Deadly Autocannon
Footage of the Phalanx CIWS Close-in Weapon System in various target practicing exercises.
The Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) was developed as the last line of automated weapons defense (terminal defense or point defense) against anti-ship missiles (AShMs), including high-g and maneuvering sea-skimmers. The basis of the system is the M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon.
Consisting of a radar-guided 20 mm (0.79 in) Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base, the Phalanx has been used by Navies around the world.
The CIWS is designed to be the last line of defense against anti-ship missiles. Due to its design criteria, its effective range is very short relative to the range of modern ASMs, from 1 to 5 nautical miles (9 km). The gun mount moves at a very high speed and with great precis...

This is America's C-RAM Weapon System
Counter rocket, artillery, and mortar, abbreviated C-RAM, is a set of systems used to detect and/or destroy incoming rockets, artillery, and mortar rounds in the air before they hit their ground targets, or simply provide early warning.
The intercept capability of C-RAM is effectively a land version of weapons such as the Phalanx CIWS radar-controlled rapid-fire gun for close-in protection of vessels from missiles; either weapon system also uses a forward-looking infrared camera to allow a defender to visually identify these target threats before engaging the targets.
One major difference between the land- and sea-based variants is the choice of ammunition. Whereas naval Phalanx systems fire tungsten armor-piercing rounds, the C-RAM uses the 20mm ammunition, originally developed for the ...

Worlds Top 7 Close-in Weapon Systems (CIWS) | BEST "Sea-Whiz" NAVAL DEFENSES
A close-in weapon system (CIWS), often pronounced "sea-whiz", is a point-defense weapon system for detecting and destroying short-range incoming missiles and enemy aircraft which have penetrated the outer defenses, typically mounted shipboard in a naval capacity. Nearly all classes of modern warships are equipped with some kind of CIWS device.
There are two types of CIWS systems. A gun-based CIWS usually consists of a combination of radars, computers, and multiple-barrel, rotary rapid-fire cannons placed on a rotating gun mount. Counter rocket, artillery, and mortar, abbreviated C-RAM, is a set of systems used to detect and/or destroy incoming rockets, artillery, and mortar rounds in the air before they hit their ground targets, or simply provide early warning.

One major difference between the land- and sea-based variants is the choice of ammunition. Whereas naval Phalanx systems fire tungsten armor-piercing rounds, the C-RAM uses the 20mm ammunition, originally developed for the M163 Vulcan air defense system. These rounds explode on impact with the target, or on tracer burnout, thereby greatly reducing the risk of collateral damage from rounds that fail to hit their target.

Whether science fiction or a realistic technology, it's an interesting tactical weapon concept. Translated from Russian, Dahir's description: As promised, I show an attack with the destruction of an entire carrier group. Many will surely think, I’ve over-complicated everything. The fact is that the ships accompanying the aircraft carrier, and the aircraft carrier itself, are armed with automatic guns that fire at a crazy rate, all that you have time to shoot at them they will be able to shoot down on approach, not a single rocket will fly closer than a kilometer due to the astounding fire rate of 10.000 rounds per minute. Simply put, any frontal attack will be counterproductive; it will be comparable to dumping thousands of missiles into the sea. It is imperative that we collect them in one fist of a thousand intellectual missiles, at an altitude beyond the reach of guns (ten kilometers) and attack with at least two hundred missiles at once, and do so five times in a row without a pause. But the last hundred missiles can be planted in five points, or, twenty missiles for each point in order to completely pierce through an aircraft carrier.
