Plot Twist: The Dinosaur-Killing Asteroid Didn't Come Alone
About 66 million years ago, a 10-km-wide object from space hit the Earth and initiated the fifth mass extinction event. From causing wildfires that raged across the continents to triggering tsunamis, the impact wiped out nearly 75% of life on the planet and specifically led to the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs. In addition, the impactor left behind a vast, 180-km-wide crater known as the Chicxulub crater underneath the Yucatán Peninsula in today's Mexico.
So far, scientists have believed that there was a single massive chunk of rock that triggered the extinction event. But now, in a ground-breaking discovery, they have found evidence that the Chicxulub impactor didn't come alone. Instead, it had a companion whose impact created the newly discovered Nadir Crater.
So how did scientis...

A second area of disturbed weather has developed over the Yucatan
Thursday is heating up quickly. The afternoon will again be sunny, hot, and dry with highs in the mid 90s.
Humidity starts to creep back in for Friday and Saturday as the temps continue to climb into the upper 90s. Heat index values around 105 in the afternoons.
Expect a better chance of scattered storms returning for Sunday.
In the tropics we are tracking an area of disturbed weather moving off the east coast of Florida. No worries for us on this as it’s sending a plume of tropical moisture across south and central Florida. There is a small chance of development after it tracks into the Atlantic.
A second area of disturbed weather has developed over the Yucatan of Mexico and will move into the Bay of Campeche which is the far southwestern part of the Gulf. This system will spread rai...

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is famous for Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, world-famous destinations attracting millions of visitors each year with their picture-perfect beaches and high-class resorts. But since we came to Mexico for it’s nature and culture, we were looking for adventures off-the-beaten-path in Yucatan. Today, we’d like to share our top 5 experiences with you.
01:09 Punta Laguna – head into the jungle with a local, Mayan guide, observe spider monkeys in the wild, kayak and zipline over a lively lagoon, spot some caimans and let them lower you into a hidden underground cenote.
02:43 Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve – known for it’s natural beauty and sustainable tourism, the reserve contains a beautiful stretch of beach with a off-shore coral reef and lively mangroves where you can spot birds, caymans and manatees.
03:18 Bacalar – not a big secret anymore, but the „Lagoon of Seven Colors“ with crystal clear water in all shades of blue is still worth a visit. Rent a kayak and paddle out to the „Canal de los Piratas“
03:40 Calakmul – one of the largest and most powerful ancient Maya ruins, nestled in the middle of a lush rain forest. Find yourself surrounded by wild animals while hiking through the widespread historical site and climb the highest structures for a spectacular view04:47 Ek Balam – a great alternative to Calakmul is Ek Balam, a Mayan site much more accessible and still less visited than most other ruins in the area
04:56 Cenotes – the natural highlight of the Pensinsula are around 3.000 sinkholes filled with fresh water. They’re an important habitat for plants and animals, considered as the entrance of the Mayan underworld and a perfect place to explore above and below the water surface. Find cliff jumps, rope swings (San Lorenzo Oxman Cenote) and spectacular places for snorkeling and scuba diving (Casa, Carwash, Dos Ojos, …).
If you’re interested in scuba diving the Cenotes or with the bull sharks living close to Playa del Carmen’s coast, check out our previous videos!

Have you been to the Yucatan Peninsula? Which were your favorite destinations there? Did you enjoy the cities, or prefer the natural surroundings as well? Share your experiences with us in the comments!

So how did scientists discover this crater? How do they know its impactor contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs? Finally, and most importantly, how many more such craters from that period lay undiscovered?
The 25th episode of the Sunday Discovery Series answers all these questions in detail.

Now, construction of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s crown jewel project – the Maya Train – is rapidly destroying part of that hidden underground world, already under threat by development and mass tourism.
This system will spread rain into Mexico as it moves northwest over the next several days. Once again, no impacts for us from this system.
In the long range, other areas of concern may be spawned out of the disturbed weather across the Caribbean. It’s too early to have any certainty, but we’ll keep a close eye on any new possible developments.
At the beach we will have moderate rip current risks through the next several days. That risk goes up to high Sunday. Check the beach flags when you get to the beach and stay safe.
