Does Geopolitical Risk Stifle Corporate Innovation?
Abstract: The impact of geopolitical conflict on global trade and security is clear. But how does rising geopolitical risk (GPR) impact corporate innovation? The authors sampled 49,619 firm-year observations, covering 4,625 U.S. public firms from 1985 to 2017. They report that GPR lowers a firm's technological innovation output (three measures: the number of patents and their financial value and scientific value). Next, they decompose GPR into geopolitical threats and geopolitical acts. They find that threats are more consequential than acts. But why does GPR lower innovation? The authors show that following a rise in GPR, managers lower their discretionary investment in research and development (R&D), which causes a drop in innovation output. Further, rising GPR causes a net turnover in i...

American (word)
The meaning of the word American in the English language varies according to the historical, geographical, and political context in which it is used. "American" is derived from "America", a term originally denoting all of the New World (also called the Americas). In some expressions, it retains this Pan-American sense, but its usage has evolved over time and, for various historical reasons, the word came to denote people or things specifically from the United States of America.
In modern English, "American" generally refers to persons or things related to the United States of America; among native English speakers this usage is almost universal, with any other use of the term requiring ...

The Nationals are the eighth major league franchise to be based in Washington, D.C., and the first since 1971. The current NL club was founded in 1969 as the Montreal Expos, part of the MLB expansion. The Expos were purchased by MLB in 2002 after a failed contraction plan,[7] and the team was moved to Washington, D.C., and named the Nationals before the 2005 season, marking the first franchise relocation in MLB since the third Washington Senators moved to Texas in 1971.
While the team initially struggled after moving to Washington, the Nationals had considerable success throughout the 2010s, winning the 2019 World Series, their first, in addition to four division titles.[8] The team's two overall first picks in the MLB draft, Stephen Strasburg in 2009 and Bryce Harperin 2010, attracted new levels of attention to the team. Harper became the youngest position player to be selected to the MLB All-Star Game, while Strasburg was named the 2019 World Series MVP.[9][10]

Further, rising GPR causes a net turnover in inventors, hurting innovation. Interestingly, the drop in human capital explains nearly 10 times the effect than the decline in R&D. Supplementary analyses show that rising GPR lowers not only the volume and (financial and scientific) value of patents but also their domain. Managers can mitigate the adverse effects of GPR by advertising less and lobbying less. The findings are insightful to managers of technological and product innovation, R&D, and human resources.
About speaker: Vivek Astvansh is an assistant professor of marketing at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University (IU), United States. He uses reduced-form econometrics, machine learning, and lab/field experiments to research how negative events affect firm performance, what mechanisms underlie these effects, and what actions managers can take to mitigate the performance effects. His phenomena of interest include politics, trade credit, bankruptcy, news, social media, spam, new product/package, lobbying, environmental footprint, chatbot, gender and cultural diversity, consumer complaints, consumer compliance, competitive threat, brand personality, data breach, short-selling, hedge fund activism, and corporate social responsibility. Vivek’s research has been published in Production and Operations Management, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, and Harvard Business Review. Vivek has published two empirical articles and one “data paper.” He has under review an exclusively machine learning paper, an exclusively lab experiment paper, an exclusively review (no data) paper, and of course, empirical papers. Akin to the eclectic phenomena of his interest, his coauthors are academics from finance, marketing, management, and operations, and doctoral students and faculty. More about him at https://kelleyschool.iu.edu/astvansh.

Abstract:
Wikidata - whose roots also go back to the ISI - has become the world's leading open knowledge base. We present where Wikidata is and where it is going - but also look at its limitations, and limitations of Knowledge Graph based solutions in general. By far the most knowledge is captured in natural language - and we will explore how to bring language and knowledge graphs closer together.
Denny Vrandečić, Google
Denny Vrandecic is the founder of Wikidata. Previously, he founded Semantic MediaWiki, used in many organizations such as NASA, the US intelligence agencies, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and others. He received a PhD from KIT and was a visiting researcher at USC's ISI in 2010. He was the founder of the Croatian Wikipedia, and was an elected member of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. He joined Google in 2013 and has been working on the Google Knowledge Graph since then. He has lived in Croatia, Stuttgart, Rome, Los Angeles, Berlin, and now the San Francisco Bay Area.

In modern English, "American" generally refers to persons or things related to the United States of America; among native English speakers this usage is almost universal, with any other use of the term requiring specification. However, this usage is seen by some as a semantic "misappropriation" by those who argue that "American" should be widened in English to also include people or things from anywhere in the American continents.
The word can be used as either an adjective or a noun (viz. a demonym). In adjectival use, it means "of or relating to the United States"; for example, "Elvis Presley was an American singer" or "the man prefers American English". In its noun form, the word generally means a resident or citizen of the US, or occasionally someone whose ethnic identity is simply "American". The noun is rarely used in American English to refer to people not connected to the United States. When used with a grammatical qualifier, the adjective "American" can mean "of or relating to the Americas", as in Latin American or Indigenous American. Less frequently, the adjective can take this meaning without a qualifier, as in "American Spanish dialects and pronunciation differ by country", or the name of the Organization of American States. A third use of the term pertains specifically to the indigenous peoples of the Americas, for instance, "In the 16th century, many Americans died from imp...
