Village 27 km north-east of Pietermaritzburg and 50 km south of Greytown. Administered by a health committee since 1950, it was named after the castle in Thuringia where Martin Luther translated the Bible into German.
It is situated in an agricultural area, dominated by sugar cane fields and timber plantations.
The town is served by two schools: Wartburg Kirchdorf School and Georgenau School, which originally was the Wartburg Kirchdorf Junior School. The Wartburg Kirchdorf School caters to students from pre-school right through till grade 12. The School has a wealth of facilities, having rugby fields, cricket fields, hockey fields, cricket nets, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and an athletics track and equipment, and a library.
The town was settled in the 1850s by German families, and is named after the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, Germany. To this day, the Wartburg area has had a large population of German speaking citizens, who predominantly farm in the surrounding area around the town.
The Wartburg is a castle originally built in the Middle Ages. It is situated on a 410 meters (1,350ft) precipice to the southwest of, and overlooking the town of Eisenach, in the state of Thuringia, Germany. In 1999, UNESCO added Wartburg Castle to the World Heritage List. It was the home of St. Elisabeth of Hungary, the place where Martin Luther translated the New Testament of the Bible into German, the site of the Wartburg festival of 1817 and the supposed setting for the legendary Sängerkrieg. It was an important inspiration for Ludwig II when he decided to build Neuschwanstein Castle. Wartburg is the most-visited tourist attraction in Thuringia after Weimar. Although the castle today still contains substantial original structures from the 12th through 15th centuries, much of the interior dates back only to the 19th-century period of Romanticism.
Etymology
The name of the castle is probably derived from German:Warte, a watchtower, in spite of a tradition which holds that the castle's founder, on first laying eyes on the site, exclaimed, "Warte, Berg -- du sollst mir eine Burg tragen!" ("Wait, mountain -- you shall bear my castle!"). It is a German play on words for mountain (Berg) and fortress (Burg). In addition, Louis the Springer is said to have had clay from his lands transported to the top of the hill, which was not quite within his lands, so he might swear that the castle was built on his soil.
The marque dates back to 1898 when a car made by Automobilwerk Eisenach was named the Wartburgwagen. It consisted of a two-seating cane chair, four mudgards, two headlamps, and a two-cylinder, 765-cc engine. Its top speed was 25mph (40km/h). The name was dropped in 1904 when the company changed hands but re-appeared briefly in the early 1930s on the BMW 3/15 DA-3 Wartburg, which was BMW's first sports car.
Main usage of name
The name was revived in 1956 by VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach and given to an updated version of their IFA F9 car which had been in production since 1950. The new car had a more powerful version of the three-cylinder two-stroke engine driving the front wheels and a completely new body. By this time, Germany had been divided into two countries (the West and the East) and the Wartburg factory was in the communist East (GDR).

In 1984 a deal was reached in which IFA would assemble Volkswagen's 1.3-liter EA111 engine under license, in the Barkas plant in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz).[2] The engine was too long to be mounted longitudinally in the Wartburg 353, and too long to fit between the front wheels in a transverse installation. One prototype with the longitudinal engine was built, nicknamed Nasenbär (Coati) because of its long nose. Wartburg chose the transverse option, and thus the Wartburg 1.3 only entered production in October 1988 as a new transmission also had to be developed, as well as an entirely new front end (everything ahead of the A-pillar was new). The track was widened by 10 cm (3.9 in) in front and by 6 cm (2.4 in) in the rear, necessitating small fender extensions. The new drivetrain also meant that the gear shifter migrated to the floor, instead of on the column where it was usually found on Wartburgs. The considerable changes meant that the development costs far outreached the projected expense of manufacturing the four-stroke 1600 cc engine developed by Wartburg's own engineers in the early seventies.

Im hohen Mittelalter war die Wartburg Residenz und Musenhof der kunstsinnigen Landgrafen.
Als Schauplatz der Sängerkriegslegende gilt sie als eine Wiege der deutschen Literatur. Auf der Wartburg lebte und wirkte im frühen 13. Jahrhundert die bis heute als Sinnbild tätiger Nächstenliebe verehrte Heilige Elisabeth. Der beauftragte Architekt Hugo von Ritgen schuf neue Bauten auf dem Burggelände, die bis 1890 Palas, Ritterhaus, Vogtei und Wehrgänge zur heutigen Gestalt der Burg ergänzten.

Wartburg 353: A Piece of East German Automotive History
The Wartburg 353 was a popular East German car produced between 1966 and 1991 by the VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach. It was a successor to the Wartburg 311 and was known for its distinctive two-stroke engine, boxy design, and durability.

Affordable: As a product of a planned economy, the Wartburg 353 was priced to be affordable for the average East German citizen.
The Wartburg 353 was produced in East Germany during the Cold War. 1 It was a symbol of the country's automotive industry and was widely used by both private individuals and state-owned enterprises. Due to limited access to Western technology and materials, the Wartburg 353 retained a somewhat outdated design compared to its Western counterparts.
Decline and Discontinuation
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Wartburg 353 could no longer compete with the more modern and fuel-efficient Western cars that flooded the East German market. Production ceased in 1991, marking the end of an era for East German automotive manufacturing.

Despite its relatively short production run and limited technological advancements, the Wartburg 353 has gained a cult following among car enthusiasts. It is often seen as a nostalgic symbol of East Germany and its unique automotive culture.

In 1984 a deal was reached in which IFA would assemble Volkswagen's 1.3-liter EA111 engine under license, in the Barkas plant in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz).[2] The engine was too long to be mounted longitudinally in the Wartburg 353, and too long to fit between the front wheels in a transverse installation. One prototype with the longitudinal engine was built, nicknamed Nasenbär (Coati) because of its long nose. Wartburg chose the transverse option, and thus the Wartburg 1.3 only entered production in October 1988 as a new transmission also had to be developed, as well as an entirely new front end (everything ahead of the A-pillar was new). The track was widened by 10 cm (3.9 in) in front and by 6 cm (2.4 in) in the rear, necessitating small fender extensions. The new drivetrain also meant that the gear shifter migrated to the floor, instead of on the column where it was usually found on Wartburgs. The considerable changes meant that the development costs far outreached the projected expense of manufacturing the four-stroke 1600 cc engine developed by Wartburg's own engineers in the early seventies.

Village 27 km north-east of Pietermaritzburg and 50 km south of Greytown. Administered by a health committee since 1950, it was named after the castle in Thuringia where Martin Luther translated the Bible into German.
It is situated in an agricultural area, dominated by sugar cane fields and timber plantations.
The town is served by two schools: Wartburg Kirchdorf School and Georgenau School, which originally was the Wartburg Kirchdorf Junior School. The Wartburg Kirchdorf School caters to students from pre-school right through till grade 12. The School has a wealth of facilities, having rugby fields, cricket fields, hockey fields, cricket nets, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and an athletics track and equipment, and a library.
The town was settled in the 1850s by German families, and is named after the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, Germany. To this day, the Wartburg area has had a large population of German speaking citizens, who predominantly farm in the surrounding area around the town.
