Vampire Rodents - Clockseed
The Vampire Rodents spawned one of the most compelling musical sagas of the 1990s. Their albums are triumphs of free fantasy, somewhere between psychedelic visions and avant-garde collage.

The Vampire Rodents spawned one of the most compelling musical sagas of the 1990s. Their albums are triumphs of free fantasy, somewhere between psychedelic visions and avant-garde collage.
Anton Rathausen (pseudonym of Daniel Vahnke) and Victor Wulf hail from Toronto. The former was an anthropologist by profession and a student of avant-garde music. The second wrote film scores. Rathausen-Vahnke moved to Arizona to join two anthropologist friends, Karl Geist and Jing Laoshu. Thus were born the Vampire Rodents: Rathausen-Vahnke on guitar, singing and sampling; Wulf on keyboards; Laoshu on percussion; Geist on bass.
If War Music was still dominated by guitar and vocals, according to the conventions of rock music, if Premonition expanded the instrumentation and winked at the avant-garde, and if Lullaby Land updated the sound to the era of techno and heavymetal, Clockseed (Re-Constriction, 1995) gives the green light to the orchestra and drum machines, recovering the overflowing chromaticism of the former and exploiting to the full the strident cadences of the latter. Orchestra instruments take the place of guitar distortions. The dance rhythm does not allow a second's pause, always in the foreground at full volume.
In this constant bickering between vulgar, pedestrian rhythms and acoustic, conceptual, "high" soundtrack lies the main key to the disc. Their grotesqueness consists in simultaneously playing a novelty nursery rhyme and an avant-garde mini-concert (Heliopause), or hip hop and a chamber quintet (Revisioned). Traces of the '60s in the catchy refrain and sprightly organ of Low Orbit are annihilated by the pressing counterpoint of strings, carpentry noises, and rhythmic fractures.
Acting on the three basic variables (singer, rhythm, samples), from time to time the group gives a different personality to the song. In this increasingly transfixed carnival of disguises parade female litanies with asylum-like polyrhythms (Ravages Of Ease), the hallucinatory recitation dear to Brecht against a backdrop of paroxysmal cadences, piano stirrups and violin twirls (Zygote), a drunken chant over a frenetic tempo with end-of-the-world harmonies (Iron Clad), and so on. Scatter traces the method back to Zappa's farcical, riotous operettas.
When the gradation of violence increases to dangerous levels, as in Dowager's Egg and Mother Tongue, the Vampire Rodents sound like Nine Inch Nails accompanied by a symphony orchestra playing Schonberg pieces and a big band performing Ornette Coleman themes.
Compared to Lullaby Land, the scores are less scattered: each track is focused on its own identity. Instead of the freewheeling excursions of that record, a technique of layering on a theme to follow is established. Instead of a sequence of extemporaneous flurries, of improbable connections, the song becomes an essay in provisional completeness, a search for "concordia discors." The immense and inherently messy material of Lullaby Land is still simmering, but packaged into articulate units.
At times (Another Planet) the balance hangs on the side of experiment, or we seem to witness the birth of a new form of lied (Clockseed). At other times the rhythmic not only takes over but veers toward a psychedelic world-music (that of Skin Walker for spacey voices and harmonic voids, and especially the more full-bodied and evocative Terra Amata).
Always on the run, always at a breakneck pace. Another symphony of chaos and multitude, of the end of order and reason.
Their cannibalistic dance music, which swallows and ruminates other dance music, actually rests on only two instruments, the cello and percussive guitar, leaving it to the samples to act as a flywheel and disproportionately amplify the contributions of the other instruments.
As always, the lyrics are inspired by the most grim and repulsive black humor. The quartet of Vahnke, Wulf, Laoshu and Akastia has been joined by Mordachai Benghiat (guitar), Consuelo Buenviento (flute, oboe), Chase (percussion), Lucia De La Torre (clarinet, bassoon) and Anna Luisa Escalante (trumpet, trombone, saxophone). A dozen guests take turns singing.
