Chopin: The Complete Waltzes (Ott)
I never really thought that Lipatti’s recordings of the Chopin waltzes could be surpassed until I heard this. If you thought Chopin’s Waltzes were trivial salon showpieces, this recording should quickly convince you otherwise: Ott plumbs the Waltzes’s almost neurotic expressive refinement, their sudden plunges from intimacy to brilliance. She navigates harmonic changes with great sensitivity, and her use of rubato is spectacular: barely noticeable, but incredibly effective.
Ott also has a gift for varying repeated passages in ways that reveal the breadth of their interpretive potential – the second time around, something as small as a trill might be modified, or the tenor of an entire passage might be altered [see Op.18, 34/1 and the posthumous E minor, for instance]. Classical music for dinnertime: https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/ClassicalMusicforDinnertime
When approaching music as popular and as deservedly loved as Chopin’s waltzes, a musician must have something special to say for a new recording to make its mark. According to Fou T’Song – no mean Chopin pianist himself – Alessandro Deljavan is ‘one of the most interesting pianists I have heard in my life’. Excerpts on YouTube from his success at the 2013 Van Cliburn Competition in Fort Worth confirm the truth and promise of Fou T’Song’s acclamation.
Among recent and forthcoming recordings in his extensive discography are discs of diverse repertoire drawn from solo and chamber music including the piano quintet of Taneyev; Grieg’s violin Sonatas, Bach’s keyboard toccatas, cello sonatas by Martucci, and a Schumann recital. But the apparently simplicity of Chopin’s waltzes is no less a test of musical and technical mastery than many of these more recondite delights. The 17 waltzes are not gathered into one or two collections like the Etudes, but were composed throughout Chopin’s all-too-brief career. For many the best-known and yet also most sublime a distillation of the waltz-form is Op.64 No.1, known as the ‘Minute’ on account of its brevity. Op.69 No.1 breathes no less spirited an evocation of remembered youth, and yet with the shadow behind its harmonies of regret and melancholy which unforgettably tinge the Nocturnes. There is a waltz for every mood, and Deljavan’s interpretations will receive wide critical attention.
Chopin’s waltzes are written for the Parisian salon, for a sophisticated audience of artists and aristocracy. Though more “light hearted” than most of his other compositions they bear the unmistakable genius of Chopin: refined and exquisite pianism, brilliance and melancholy, sorrow and joy go hand in hand.
Italian Alessandro Deljavan is one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation. “His playing is full of intensive power and contagious artistry” (Dmitri Bashkirov), “he is one of the most interesting pianists I’ve heard in my life” (Fou Ts’Ong), “he is one of the most major talents of his age” (John Perry), “Jaw-dropping virtuosity and heart-stopping eloquence” (Dallas Morning News).

She captures perfectly the intimacy of both A Minor waltzes, and yet it is hard to find the more outgoing waltzes played with such brio and freedom.
Is also worth noting that Ott is playing the autographed manuscript versions of the waltzes. This has given me a bit of a headache, as I don’t have those versions (the Fontana's mostly what I'm stuck with, although it's been argued that Fontana was working from sources now lost to us), and have either had to use obscure editions which more closely match what Ott is playing or stitch together different editions to approximate the manuscripts. Musically, however, playing from the autographs was an excellent decision, as many of the autograph versions are superior to the ones we are familiar with today. In 69/1 the passage at 32:38 contains more well-formed left-hand figuration; in 69/2 the addition of Neapolitan harmony at 35:19 gives the passage a magical lift; and in 70/1 the extensive use of dotted rhythm lends a perkiness that is almost completely lost in the modern edition.
00:00 – Op.18 in E-flat Major, Grande Valse Brillante [Note how differently the acciaccatura passage is played the first and second time at 2:38 and 3:02 respectively]
05:38 – Op.34 No.1 in A-flat Major, Grande Valse Brillante [Note the textural change between 6:10 and 6:16]
*10:57 – Op.34 No.2 in A Minor, Grande Valse Brillante
16:56 – Op.34 No.3 in F Major, Grande Valse Brillante
19:10 – Op.42, Grande Valse
23:07 – Op.64 No.1 in D-flat Major, “Minute”
*25:02 – Op.64 No.2 in C-sharp Minor [Note the lower melody Ott conjures at 27:10]
*28:41 – Op.64 No.3 in A-flat Major [The middle passages are beautifully voiced]
31:46 – Op.69 No.1 in A-flat Major
35:00 – Op.69 No.2 in B Minor
38:26 – Op.70 No.1 in G-flat Major
*40:09 – Op.70 No.2 in F Minor
41:55 – Op.70 No.3 in D-flat Major
44:32 – Waltz Op. posth, in A-flat Major
45:48 – Waltz Op. posth, in E-flat Major (No.18)
47:25 – Waltz Op. posth, in E-flat Major (No.17)
49:58 – Waltz Op. posth, in E Major
*52:11 – Waltz Op. posth, in E Minor [Note again the change in colour between 52:35 and 53:01]
*54:42 – Waltz Op. posth, in A Minor

COMMENTAIRE COMPLET : VOIR PREMIER COMMENTAIRE.
