Walnut trees are any species of tree in the plant genus Juglans, the type genus of the familyJuglandaceae, the seeds of which are referred to as walnuts. All species are deciduoustrees, 10–40 metres (33–131ft) tall, with pinnate leaves 200–900 millimetres (7.9–35.4in), with 5–25 leaflets; the shoots have chambered pith, a character shared with the wingnuts (Pterocarya), but not the hickories (Carya) in the same family.
The common name walnut derives from Old Englishwealhhnutu, literally 'foreign nut' (from wealh 'foreign' + hnutu 'nut'), because it was introduced from Gaul and Italy. The Latin name for the walnut was nux Gallica, "Gallic nut".
The generic name comes from Latin jūglans, meaning 'walnut, walnut tree'; jūglans in turn is a contraction of Jōvis glans, 'nut of [the god] Jupiter'.
Hunsdon is a village and civil parish in Hertfordshire, England. It is around 5.5 miles (9km) east of Ware and 5 miles (8km) north-west of Harlow.
History
Hunsdon village centre contains many old houses, some known to date back to at least the 15th century. There are no known dwellings dating back before about this time, although a few old hall houses in the area are probably older, and Hunsdon was registered in the Domesday Book (1086).
Village centre
The village centre is dominated by what is today the Village Hall. This had previously been the village school before the more modern one was built further up Widford Road. This building was originally believed to be a house called Harlowes, owned by John Harlowe in the 15th century, which overlooked Harlowes Green, one of the 5 Greens in the Parish, and which is now The Crown public house car park and a small green on which stands the War Memorial. It was certainly being run as a school in 1806, when Mrs Calvert of Hunsdon House was assisting the then schoolmistress. The Calverts were instrumental in enlarging and adding to the building about that time to improve the features of the school. The two adjoining houses were probably built on by the Calverts in about 1817 when major renovation by them was being undertaken to the school building, to make a more attractive centre for the village.

Juglans regia - Van den Berk on Trees
Has been cultivated for many centuries and grows to become a large tree approx. 30 m tall. The almost round crown consists of heavy branches. The old trunk is light grey with deep, irregular vertical grooves. The imparipinnate leaves grow to a length of 20 - 30 cm and have 2 - 4 (6) opposing pairs of leaflets. The leaf segments are ovoid to oval, approx. 8 - 12 cm. After the appearance of the leaves the large male catkins (approx. 7 cm) and the smaller female flowers appear, the latter in groups of 2 or 3. The green, almost round fruit has a smooth husk that has short gland-like hairs at the beginning. The light brown nut is grooved. Very tasty. The nuts do not appear until the tree is approx. 15 years old. Has deep roots and much prefers open soil that the roots can penetrate. The tree is...

Cracking Butternuts or White Walnuts Juglans cinerea
Quick breakdown of how I crack butternuts, which is similar to black walnuts. These are a delicious, buttery nut that are actually illegal to harvest in Minnesota, but legal in Wisconsin, which is because of the trees being protected as they're attacked by butternut canker.
Butternuts fall earlier than black walnuts, and I harvested these in September, where black walnuts I might get in October up here in the NorthI. After harvesting I dried them a couple layers deep in cardboard boxes in the garage. Keep the squirrels away from them.
After a month or two they were dry enough to crack. It took me a few tries, but this is the best method I found so far. Take a hammer, do it on a sturdy surface, I'm using a table here, but it's not ideal, get outside and do it on a rock, or some other su...
Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) trees were planted all over rural Idaho because they are cold hardy, drought tolerant trees that produced edible nuts. They seeds were also easy to transport in the covered wagons that pioneers used. The meat of the nuts is hard to get , but some tricks evolved overtime to help speed up the processing.
I am demonstrating what was taught and explained to me by many older people I have talked with. Sadly, black walnuts are viewed mostly as a nuisance trees now days, that clutter the landscape with their dropped walnuts. Instead of being viewed as food, most of the nuts are discarded.

After the nuts are cracked, I use a snips to spot-treat the shells to reveal whole halves, which is a great trick Sam Thayer showed me (Sam discusses these nuts in his first book, The Foragers Harvest).

De groene, bijna ronde, vrucht heeft een gladde bolster die in het begin nog kort, klierachtig behaard is. De lichtbruine noot is gegroefd. Bijzonder smakelijk. Noten verschijnen pas bij circa 15 jarige exemplaren. Wortelt zeer diep en heeft liefst goed doorwortelbare, open grond.

The large arable fields and ancient woodland clumps persist as characteristic features of the Hunsdon plateau Landscape Character Area. Behind the distant woods lies Hunsdon airfield, important during WW2 and reflected in the open flat landscape. Apart from growth in the trees, there is little obvious change since 1999 although roadside vegetation growth has occurred and may in time obscure this view.
It is possible that the garden fencing that appears to the left of shot in 2020 is new, but also possible that the slight difference in position of the two viewpoints has led to this: using landscape features alone as reference points when lining up views, even with GPS, can make it difficult to get exactly the same spot.

The tree is an important producer of wood.
Take a hammer, do it on a sturdy surface, I'm using a table here, but it's not ideal, get outside and do it on a rock, or some other surface that can absorb the shock--you'll get better nuts for it.
After the nuts are cracked, I use a snips to spot-treat the shells to reveal whole halves, which is a great trick Sam Thayer showed me (Sam discusses these nuts in his first book, The Foragers Harvest).

Bijzonder smakelijk. Noten verschijnen pas bij circa 15 jarige exemplaren. Wortelt zeer diep en heeft liefst goed doorwortelbare, open grond.

John Bisset plays a jaunty lute Allemande from John Dowland (1563-1626). I'm not a music reader so I learnt it by ear from Julian Bream's recording - so there's the odd deviation from the original.

Greenhill Estates proudly presents Walnut Tree House, a stunning detached equestrian property set in the highly sought-after village of Hunsdon on the outskirts of Ware. Set behind private gates, this delightful home boasts five bedrooms, three reception rooms, an impressive kitchen/ diner, two bathrooms, extensive gardens, alongside a host of equestrian amenities including a block of 5 stables, paddocks, and a 40x20m all-weather menage/riding school. If you're in search of a splendid rural residence with top-notch equestrian facilities, then look no further and arrange an internal tour.
Myself and Candice went for a 6 mile walk in and around Hunsdon on the Hertfordshire/ Essex border.
I also reviewed another British Army 12 hour ration pack for lunch.
There was plenty of history in the form of Hunsdon House and it's surrounding parkland and woodland, along with remnants of the defences of the former WWII RAF Hunsdon Airfield!
The weather was sunny and warm and the ciders were long and cold!
