WTBU (A.M. 640 kHz/F.M. 89.3 MHz) is a "Part 15" student-managed and -operated radio station at Boston University. This means it is not licensed by the FCC but operates legally under special "low power" rules (not to be confused with LPFM FCC licensed stations). It has a block-format programming schedule, with individual DJs able to play pretty much whatever they choose during their weekly airshifts (usually two hours in length). Overall the sound skews mostly rock/alternative, but can vary significantly, including pop, urban, rap, classic rock, Triple-A, trance, electro, industrial and metal...or just true freeform.
WTBU is on the air 20 hours a day, any day that the BU dorms are open (at least eight months of the year). During the summers the studios may be used for special classroom exercises by the Boston University College of Communication, or "COM."
Taking advantage of the large number of broadcast journalism majors at COM, there are regular newscasts and sports updates. There is also extensive live coverage of BU sporting events, like hockey, basketball, soccer and more.
The station went on the air in June 1987 as WQMI with a middle of the road format. In 1989, it became WCQL-FM as "Cool 95.3" with an oldies format. That was dropped in August 1996 in favor of a contemporary hit radio format, WXHT ("Heat 95.3"), which placed a heavy emphasis on 1980s new wave hits. That lasted until May 1998, when it went modern rock as "95-3 The Heat" via Radio One Networks.
In March 1999, the station changed to a country format, becoming WUBB ("B95.3"). However, WUBB was faced with strong competition from country leader WOKQ, which also had a much stronger signal. WUBB also had a limited local presence when compared to WOKQ. As a result, WUBB never became a big ratings success.
On January 10, 2008, it was noted that the station had dropped country and was simulcasting sister station WQSO 96.7 (oldies) with WUBB's website stating "Coming Soon! Sports Radio" with a link to MSN's Fox Sports page, implying that the new format would be Fox Sports Radio, as both Fox Sports Radio and WUBB shared a parent company, Clear Channel Communications (now known as iHeartMedia). However, this never happened, and this was thought to be put on the website only to throw people off. Then, on January 11, WUBB switched to a stunt format of TV theme songs; in between the songs, there was a message saying "We are building a new station just for you," promoting an unnamed new format that would be announced at 6 a.m. on January 14, 2008. At the announced time, the station relaunched as "Kiss 95.3", simulcasting WXKS-FM from Boston. Soon after, the call letters changed to WSKX. As of August 2009, WSKX was no longer simulcasting WXKS-FM, but was still airing a Top 40 format.

WTBU, BU’s student-run volunteer radio station, also produces over a dozen affiliated student podcasts, with new ones added each semester. The radio station is run by an executive board of approximately 20 students and has been overseen by Anne Donohue (COM’88), a COM journalism professor and WTBU faculty advisor, since 1996. The general podcasts are overseen by audio productions director Shandra Back (COM’25), and the sports and news podcasts are produced by their own separate WTBU departments.

Low Blow by Sonic Bomb on WTBU the beat radio show Boston University
All classes were unexpectedly and abruptly cancelled at Boston University's College of Communications on Monday afternoon March 4th, 2024 due to excessive noise throughout the building as Sonic Bomb invaded the studios of WTBU and proceeded to rip through a rousing version of their song "Low Blow".
This song is about a person/entity with too much undeserved power who lives to control and destroys lives. They lie with a straight face to have this power. They strike when you are bleeding, and only know how to hit below the belt.
Hence the name Low Blow…

This song is about refusing to get sucked in to darkness, the void, depression, black holes of sadness etc when we are going through something very hard in our lives. Refusing to get swallowed by it.
Or falling down the rabbit’s hole (like in Alice in Wonder Land) of endless “what if”s that can drive people mad when we cannot control horrible events/people in our lives.
