WJFK-FM started in 1961 as WPRW-FM, the sister station to Manassas-based WPRW. In 1968, it would be sold to EZ Communications, and flipped to an easy listening format. The format would remain until January 1, 1985, when it flipped to Top 40 as WBMW, "B106." WBMW would be positioned against two other Top 40 stations, WRQX and WAVA-FM. The station would be acquired by Infinity Broadcasting in April 1987, resulting in a flip to new age music in October. On October 3, 1988, the station flipped to a rock format as WJFK, with the station being the Washington affiliate for Howard Stern, marking his return to the market for the first time since he was let go from WWDC in 1982.

A DC-based talk radio show that was syndicated on over 20 stations (one of them was WNEW-FM of NYC which they connected the lines to for updates from the Twin Towers) started quite sometime before the collapse of the North Tower (before 10:28 AM ET). There is sadly a lack of WNEW clips around the time of the crashes of the Twin Towers and Pentagon, but there are clips of this, the afternoon, and the evening shows of WNEW, The Opie and Anthony Show and The Ron And Fez Show. Opie and Anthony reacted to the collapse of Building 7 in their broadcast.

When the Capitals took to the ice in the 1970s, WTOP (then at 1500 AM) was their first D.C. flagship. In the 1987-88 season, the team moved to WMAL, then came back to WTOP (which later became WTWP, then WWWT and then WFED) in 1996-97. The transition to FM began in the 2008 postseason, when WJFK-FM began airing postseason games, while WFED remained as the primary flagship. WJFK-FM took over flagship status in 2012, with WFED remaining as an affiliate, likely due to their clear-channel status. During the 2016-17 season, WJFK-FM dropped Caps games, leaving the team to air solely on WFED (which, at the time, was also the Wizards' flagship) or streaming only. To solve this problem, Caps games aired on W284CQ (104.7 FM)/WWDC-HD2. WJFK-FM resumed flagship status the following season, with WFED re...

When the Montreal Expos took to the field in 1969, CKGM (then at 980 AM) served as their first flagship for their inaugural season. Beginning next season and running through 1988, Expos games were heard on CFCF/CIQC (then at 600 AM), as well as some overflow games being heard on CFQR-FM during that span. After a two season stint on CJAD (and overflow games heard on CKRK-FM), games moved back to CKGM in 1991.
