Vredenburg is a town of the Cape West Coast in the Western Cape province of South Africa. "Vrede" is Afrikaans for peace. It is the transportation and commercial hub of the West Coast area and administrative center of the Saldanha Bay Local Municipality. It is located 12 kilometres inland from the coast at Saldanha Bay on the Cape Columbine Peninsula 138km north of Cape Town.
History
The town was established in 1875 initially as a Dutch Reformed Church to serve the surrounding communities, as the closest church was in Hopefield. The town's original name was "Twisfontein", which in Afrikaans would be translated to troubled fountain or similar. This name came about when two competing farmers fought over the only available freshwater spring in the area. The town's name was later changed to "Prosesfontein" which is process fountain if you translate it directly. The town was renamed as they were discussing the matter of the freshwater spring and were trying to come to an agreement. When this agreement was settled and they have achieved a sense of peace among one another, the name 'Vredenburg' was chosen. The town's population in 2002 was 31,283.
Vredenburg Castle (Dutch: (Kasteel) Vredenburg or Vredeborch) was a 16th-century castle built by Habsburg emperor Charles V in the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Some remains of the castle, which stood for only 50 years, are still visible on what is now Vredenburg square in Utrecht.
History
In 1528, the Holy Roman Empire annexed the Bishopric of Utrecht, and Emperor Charles V immediately ordered the construction of a castle in Utrecht, not only to protect the domain from invasion by the duke of Guelders, but also to retain control over the city's unruly population. Construction began in 1529 and was completed in 1532.
On 8 November 1576, the States General of the Seventeen Provinces ratified an agreement, known as the Pacification of Ghent, to remove Spanish occupying soldiers. In response the castle's Spanish garrison prepared to be besieged by the Dutch rebels, turning the castle's cannons towards the city itself.
By December, the siege was underway and fighting broke out between the Spanish and Dutch. However, the garrison abandoned the castle on 11 February 1577, following negotiations between garrison commander Francesco Fernando d'Avila and Maximilien de Hénin-Liétard, the count of Bossu, who served as temporary Dutch stadholder. The abandonment was part of a general withdrawal agreed upon by the new Governor-General Don Juan one day later, on 12 February.
S1 – Ep 400 – Vredenburg – Ancient Jaw Bones with Intact Teeth!
Our trip to Vredenburg was a fantastic adventure. The drive there was filled with excitement as we first passed by the intriguing Langebaanweg Air Force Base, which, though inaccessible, offered a glimpse into its significance. Our next stop at the West Coast Fossil Park proved to be a captivating experience. Observing the ancient jaw bones with intact teeth of extinct animals was truly thrilling, making it hard to tear ourselves away. As we reached Vredenburg, we were welcomed by its charming atmosphere. We even think we found what we believe to be the original water source for the town dating back to 1875. All-in-all, our visit to Vredenburg left us with unforgettable memories and a sense of appreciation for this industrial hub. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #t...
