Scenic Driving from Beautiful Portsmouth, Dominica to Mero Beach, Dominica
About 25 km ( ~15.5 miles ) Driving in mostly south direction from around beautiful Portsmouth, Dominica to Mero Beach, Dominica during a national holiday. Visited coastal town and areas include Colihaut, Dublanc, Toucari and others. Again, I was very happy to see that recovery efforts went very well like hurricane Maria never happened there. Recorded in 4K with DJI camera.

Dominica to First Night Guadeloupe
Checked into Portsmouth, Dominica mainly as a fuel stop..only to find out-NO fuel. Headed to Terre de Haut, Guadeloupe. Customs Clearance Computer was in a Marine/Laudromat space. Saved all the info so we can now check into French customs from our boat. Got fuel a mile away at another island, then back for light groceries and some ice cream. Boys had some swimming fun. Jake made burgers for dinner and he went to bed. Boys and I did a workout while the sun went down.

Dominica (/dəˈmɪˌnɪkə/ or /ˌdɒmɪˈniːkə/; French: Dominique; Island Carib: Wai‘tu kubuli), officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is a sovereign island country.[8] The capital, Roseau, is located on the leeward side of the island. It is part of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The island lies south-southeast of Guadeloupe and northwest of Martinique. Its area is 750 km2 (290 sq mi), and the highest point is Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 m (4,747 ft) in elevation. The population was 71,293 at the 2011 census.
The island was originally inhabited by the Kalinago and later colonised by Europeans, predominantly by the French from the 1690s to 1763. Columbus is said to have passed the island on Sunday, 3 November 1493, and the island's name is derived from the Latin for "Sunday". Great Britain took possession in 1763 after its defeat of France in the Seven Years' War, and it gradually established English as the official language. The island republic gained independence in 1978.
Its name is pronounced with stress falling either on second syllable of the word, after the Latin word dŏmĭnĭcă "lordly", or on the third syllable, after the French name Dominique. Dominica has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean" for its natural environment.[9] It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest hot spring, called Boiling Lake. The island has lush mountainous rainforests, and is the home of many rare plants, animals, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall occurs inland. The Sisserou parrot, also known as the imperial amazon and found only on Dominica, is the island's national bird and featured on the national flag. Dominica's economy depends on tourism and agriculture.
Dominica is mostly volcanic and has few beaches; therefore, tourism has developed more slowly than on neighboring islands. Nevertheless, Dominica's mountains, rainforests, freshwater lakes, hot springs, waterfalls, and diving spots make it an attractive ecotourism destination. Cruise ship stopovers have increased following the development of modern docking and waterfront facilities in Roseau, the capital. Out of 22 Caribbean islands tracked, Dominica had the fewest visitors in 2008 (55,800 or 0.3% of the total). This was about half as many as visited Haiti. The volcanic nature of the island has attracted scuba divers.
Dominica has two major newspapers, The Sun and The Chronicle. There are two national television stations and a few radio stations, ZBC-AM 590, En Ba Mango 93.5/96.9FM, ZGBC-AM 740, ZGBC-FM 90.7 (Portsmouth), ZGBC-FM 102.1 (Roseau) and ZGBC-FM 106.1 (Marigot), Q95 FM, the Dominica Broadcasting Corporation, LIME and Digicel compete for most of Dominica's wireless customers.

I Drove Through Portsmouth, The Worst Place To Live In Virginia
For this video, I took I 264 East and drove into the city of Portsmouth, Virginia, down in the southeast corner of the state. From Wikipedia:
Portsmouth is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 95,535. It is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.
The Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Naval Medical Center Portsmouth are historic and active U.S. Navy facilities located in Portsmouth.
Portsmouth is located on the western side of the Elizabeth River directly across from the City of Norfolk. In 1620, the future site of Portsmouth was recognized as suitable shipbuilding location by John Wood, a shipbuilder, who petitioned King James I of England for a land grant. The surrounding area was soon settled as a plantation community.
Harbor at Portsmouth in 1843; the Naval Hospital is visible in the background
Portsmouth was founded by Colonel William Crawford, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. It was established as a town in 1752 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly and was named for Portsmouth, England.
In 1767, Andrew Sprowle, a shipbuilder, founded the Gosport Shipyard adjacent to Portsmouth. The Gosport Shipyard at Portsmouth was owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia after the
American Revolutionary War and was sold to the new United States federal government.
The Yellow Fever Memorial in Laurel Hill Cemetery was built to honor the "Doctors, Druggists and Nurses" from Philadelphia who helped fight the epidemic in Portsmouth
In 1855, the Portsmouth and Norfolk area suffered an epidemic of yellow fever which killed 1 of every three citizens. It became an independent city from Norfolk County in 1858.
During the American Civil War, in 1861, Virginia joined the Confederate States of America. Fearing that the Confederacy would take control of the shipyard at Portsmouth, the shipyard commander ordered the burning of the shipyard. The Confederate forces did in fact take over the shipyard, and did so without armed conflict through an elaborate ruse orchestrated by civilian railroad builder William Mahone (soon to become a famous Confederate officer). The Union forces withdrew to Fort Monroe across Hampton Roads, which was the only land in the area which remained under Union control.
In early 1862, the Confederate ironclad warship CSS Virginia was rebuilt using the burned-out hulk of USS Merrimack. Virginia engaged the Union ironclad USS Monitor in the famous Battle of Hampton Roads during the Union blockade of Hampton Roads. The Confederates burned the shipyard again when they left in May 1862.
Portsmouth has a long history as a port town and city. The Olde Towne Business and Historical District is located in the downtown area, where a combination of preservation and redevelopment has been underway. An example is Hawthorn Hotel & Suites at The Governor Dinwiddie Hotel, which was renovated and reopened in 2005 after being closed for more than 10 years. It has been recognized by Historic Hotels of America, a program of the National Trust for Historical Preservation that identifies hotels that have maintained their historical integrity, architecture and ambiance and provides resources for their preservation. The historic hotel was named for Governor Robert Dinwiddie, who was the administrative head of the Colony of Virginia during the time Portsmouth was founded in 1752. It was largely through his efforts that Virginia survived the French and Indian War relatively well. (Dinwiddie County near Petersburg was also named for him).

For this video, I took I 264 East and drove into the city of Portsmouth, Virginia, down in the southeast corner of the state. This part of the state part of the Hampton Roads region of Virginia - an area rich in history, and a strategic location for our naval presence. The day was Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 2 pm
Now, we’re going to give you a pretty good perspective on this city, as we’re going to start off in a bad part of town, then drive into downtown proper, then drive into a nicer neighborhood of Portsmouth, all in one continuous shot. This is one of the worst parts of town, in an area just southwest of downtown proper. However, there are far WORSE parts of town, they’re actually way further south in an area here. Seems that a lot of south Portsmouth is rough, and the further you get away from downtown, the worse it gets.
In any event, this is a good idea of what some of the more rundown neighborhoods of Portsmouth look like. But to me, they weren’t THAT bad. Clearly there are far worse bad hoods in many of our major cities. We’ll drive through this bad part for a while and then head downtown.
While it has an urban character in many areas, the housing stock in Portsmouth is dominated by small single-family homes and low-end suburban-style apartment complexes like this. Homes in this part of town are about $150-$175,000. As Hampton Roads’ population has grown, home buyers in this part of the state want newer, more modern homes. Portsmouth isn’t able to annex nearby land to grow, so they can’t easily build new communities, so it’s been hard to attract wealthier professionals. There just aren’t many places to build new homes here.
Sixty percent of Portsmouth’s housing units are more than 45 years old. The steady exodus of wealthier residents means that Portsmouth’s median income and educational attainment levels have lagged behind the rest of Hampton Roads.
Portsmouth is losing people these days. At one point, in 1960, Portsmouth had 114,000 people. In the last 60 years, its population has dropped by 17%, due primarily to outmigration of middle class families with children, who want safer and nicer. Today, there’s less than 100,000 people here.
Now, we’re getting into downtown. There’s a big navy presence here, and as you’ll see later, Portsmouth is directly across from the Elizabeth River from the city of Norfolk. The downtown area of Portsmouth gets a lot of tourism, mostly due to the city’s history, and because of the Navy presence. Portsmouth was founded in 1752, and has always been major port for the east coast, a place where ships were constructed, and the surrounding area was used as plantations, primarily cotton and tobacco. Portsmouth also saw many battles during the Civil War, due to its strategic location as a shipbuilding hub.
They’ve been talking about giving the downtown area a makeover and gentrifying parts of downtown with more modern retail and fancy waterfront condos. However, for now, the trend is moving AWAY from downtown urban cores, not building more housing stock within them. But Portsmouth leaders have discussed ways to reinvent their aging downtown in order to attract more business and residents.
Here’s more of downtown Portsmouth.
Here are some of the nicer neighborhoods in Portsmouth. This is a neighborhood called Park View. Homes here are anywhere from $175 to $325,000. This is only a few blocks from downtown proper.
And that’s a look at Portsmouth, Virginia. A city that’s slowly shrinking in size, and one that has had a hard time attracting new urban professionals. And that’s despite the general Hampton Roads population growth. So, Portsmouth is struggling.
