The viola da gamba | Netherlands Bach Society
The viola da gamba, or informally gamba, is a string instrument that is mostly used in music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The instrument also appears in some of Bach's music, such as the St John's Passion and the St Matthew Passion. In this short documentary, gamba player Mieneke van der Velden from the Netherlands Bach Society shows the special characteristics of the viola da gamba and what sets the instrument apart from other string instruments such as the cello or double bass.

Bach - Viola da gamba sonata in G major BWV 1027 - Van der Velden | Netherlands Bach Society
Bach wrote this Sonata for viola da gamba and harpsichord - performed here by Mieneke van der Velden and Emmanuel Frankenberg for All of Bach – in Köthen and it is very likely that he wrote the piece for Christian Ferdinand Abel, one of the cellists at the court. Although this sonata has never become really famous, it is Bach through and through. In the quick movements, we hear the gilt cast-iron polyphony that forms the trademark of the composer.

Greensleeves" is a traditional English folk song. A broadside ballad by the name "A Newe Northen Dittye of ye Ladye Greene Sleves" was registered by Richard Jones at the London Stationer's Company in September 1580
Here I play a 7 string bass viol or viola da gamba. Viols most commonly have six strings, although many 16th-century instruments had only four or five strings. Viols were (and are) strung with gut strings of lower tension than on the members of the violin family.[citation needed] Gut strings produce a sonority far different from steel,...

Bach - Viola da gamba sonata no. 2 in D major BWV 1028 - Van der Velden | Netherlands Bach Society
From the very first notes, it is clear that Bach wrote the Sonata for viola da gamba in D major, performed here by Mieneke van der Velden and Benjamin Alard for All of Bach, for a top-level gambist. The most likely candidate was the fourteen-year-old Carl Friedrich Abel, a promising gambist who went to study at the Thomasschule in Leipzig in 1737. Under Bach’s wing, he grew into an outstanding musician and composer. Although we cannot be certain, Carl Friedrich’s close ties with Bach and his great talent make him the ideal candidate performer of this sonata.

Viols were (and are) strung with gut strings of lower tension than on the members of the violin family.[citation needed] Gut strings produce a sonority far different from steel, generally described as softer and sweeter. Around 1660, gut or silk core strings overspun with copper wire first became available; these were then used for the lowest-pitched bass strings on viols, and on many other string instruments as well.
Viols are fretted in a manner similar to early guitars or lutes, by means of movable wrapped-around and tied-on gut frets. A low seventh string was supposedly added in France to the bass viol by Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe (c. 1640–1690), whose students included the French gamba virtuoso and composer Marin Marais. Also, the painting Saint Cecilia with an Angel (1618) by Domenichino (1581–1641) shows what may be a seven-string viol.
Unlike members of the violin family, which are tuned in fifths, viols are usually tuned in fourths with a major third in the middle, mirroring the tuning employed on the vihuela de mano and lute during the 16th century and similar to that of the modern six-string guitar.
