Vincent Hugo Bendix (December 12, 1881 – March 27, 1945) was an Americaninventor and industrialist. Vincent Bendix was a pioneer and leader in both the automotive and aviation industries during the 1920s and 1930s.
Background
Vincent Hugo Bendix was born in Moline, Illinois. He was eldest of three children born to Methodist clergyman, Reverend Jann Bengtsson, a native of Ångermanland, Sweden, and his wife Anna Danielson, also an immigrant from Sweden. While in Moline the family name was changed to "Bendix". They later moved to Chicago, Illinois and Vincent purchased the Palmer Mansion in 1930, for $3,000,000.
Career
Vincent Bendix founded the Bendix Corporation of Chicago in 1907 to manufacture automobiles, called Bendix Buggies. After two years and producing 7000 vehicles the company failed. In 1910 however, Bendix invented and patented the Bendix drive, a gear that could engage an engine at zero rotational speed and then (through the aid of a spring and the higher speed of the running engine) pull back and disengage automatically at higher speed (nominally the engine's running speed). This drive made the electric starter practical for automobile engines and later for engines in aircraft and other motorized vehicles.

Vincent Bendix Plans to Restore Palmer Castle
On September 2, 1930, the Lansing State Journal published an article about the Palmer Castle. At the time, it was believed that Chicago’s famous landmark—the Potter Palmer "castle" on Lake Shore Drive—would once again become a residence. The grand old mansion, occupying an entire block on the Gold Coast, was expected to host distinguished visitors to the city once more.
Since Vincent Bendix, head of the Bendix Corporation, purchased the "castle" in July 1928, many rumors had circulated about its future. "It will be a place where I can entertain my friends," Mr. Bendix stated. "Naturally, it will also be available for charitable and other worthy public events. I’m placing valuable tapestries and other art pieces in the Palmer residence." The mansion was eventually demolished in 1950.

Bendix 753F, a Clock Radio, from 1953
Thought I'd make a video of this one. Youtube friend, ValveMan41 and I have been discussing clocks, so, I thought I'd post this rather large clock radio from Bendix Aviation. I keep it at bedside and usually listen to it a bit, before turning in. I don't go so far as to rely on it for an alarm, which does work, but, it never loses a minute in time keeping. Good old technology. Hope you enjoy.
