Baryshnikov/Hines in White Nights: Dance and the Cold War
Seeking artistic freedom, Mikhail Baryshnikov defected from the Soviet Union while the Bolshoi Ballet was on tour in Toronto in 1974 when he was 26. Baryshnikov's defection was big news, and he enjoyed a high public profile. Solidifying his place in popular culture was the 1977 movie The Turning Point, an exceptional movie that I profiled previously. This video focuses on his second movie effort, White Nights, from 1985 where he had a lead role with tap legend Gregory Hines. A film out of nowhere by an unknown Soviet director that anticipated the underground
club scene of 80s and 90s NYC and launched the indie film movement that touted Beth and
Scott B., Jarmusch, and Spike.
Punk, sci-fi and some very twisted dark comedy made the film and actress/model Anne Carlisle (who plays dual androgynous roles) cult-famous and was the highest grossing indie film of the year (budget: $500,00). Carlisle plays a fashion model obsessed with fame whose sexual partners seem to be dying at an alarming rate, thereâs lots of clubbing, and then the aliens come to NY looking for heroin.
Vincent Canby said it best: âLiquid Sky is a celebration of v...

Excalibur - The last action (1981-directed by John Boorman)
King Arthur and his soldiers in "Excalibur"
Excalibur is a 1981 American epic medieval fantasy film directed, produced, and co-written by John Boorman that retells the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table, based on the 15th-century Arthurian romance Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory. It stars Nigel Terry as Arthur, Nicol Williamson as Merlin, Nicholas Clay as Lancelot, Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere, Helen Mirren as Morgana, Liam Neeson as Gawain, Gabriel Byrne as Uther Pendragon, Corin Redgrave as Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall, and Patrick Stewart as Leondegrance. The film is named after the legendary sword of King Arthur that features prominently in Arthurian literature. Finding Christa - Trailer - Third World Newsreel
This documentary presents a moving yet unsentimental view of motherhood and adoption. It explores the feelings surrounding the reunion of a young woman with her natural mother 20 years after being given up for adoption. The reunion is between filmmaker Cmille Billops and her and her own daughter. Facing the re-encounter with mixed emotions, Billops interrogates her family and friends as well as her own motivations behind the decision. The result is an original and personal film that challenges societal biases about adoption and offers new insight on mother-daughter relationships.

THE CYCLE
Excerpt from the film THE CYCLE.
One of the few Iranian New Wave films to be distributed in the U.S., Dariush Mehrjui's The Cycle deals with pervasive corruption under the Shah's regime. With its harsh, cynical depiction of life among the poverty-stricken, the film was banned for three years, yet met with widespread critical acclaim abroad. The story follows Ali, a young peasant who moves with his invalid father to Tehran. To pay for the ailing man's hospital care, Ali sells his blood on the black market to middle men, who then sell the scarce resource to hospitals. Tired of being exploited, Ali joins the traffickers and rises in the ranks, becoming cold, corrupted, and eventually selling tainted blood back to the sick and destitute. That's the cycle. "A devastating picture of a country i...

The Lickerish Quartet (1970) is an arthouse blue movie by Radley Metzger. It was made in the hey day of the "Golden Age of PđŠrn," a window in which pđŠrnđČgraphic, feature length films were legitimized and discussed in the public sphere. Arthouse films such as Andy Warhol's Blue Movie blurred the edges on what is considered scholarly and what is considered smut. "A very classy movie ... a first-rate service comedy" â Vincent Canby, The New York Times
Matthew Broderick stars as a naĂŻve army recruit looking for action â though not the battle kind â in Neil Simon's hilarious comedy about boot camp during WWII. The year is 1945 and Eugene Morris Jerome (Broderick) finds himself far from the comforts of his Brooklyn home after being sent to basic training in Biloxi, Mississippi. Expecting the army to be dolls, doughnuts and USO dances, he instead encounters a tough drill sergeant (Christopher Walken) and a platoon of often hostile recruits. Armed with only his sense of humor, Eugene is determined to leave camp with everything he came in with â except his virginity â in this light-hearted look at one man's determined plan to march to his own beat.

Vincent Canby said it best: âLiquid Sky is a celebration of virtually every anti-social attitude one can think of."

The film's soundtrack features the music of Richard Wagner and Carl Orff, along with an original score by Trevor Jones.
Excalibur was shot entirely on location in Ireland, employing Irish actors and crew. It has been acknowledged for its importance to the Irish filmmaking industry and for helping launch the film and acting careers of a number of British and Irish actors, including Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart, Gabriel Byrne and CiarĂĄn Hinds.
Film critics Roger Ebert and Vincent Canby criticized the film's plot and characters, although they and other reviewers[9] praised its visual style. Excalibur opened at number one in the United States, eventually grossing $34,967,437 on a budget of around US$11 million to rank 18th in that year's receipts.Boorman had planned a film adaptation of the Merlin legend as early as 1969, but when submitting the three-hour script written with Rospo Pallenberg to United Artists, they rejected it deeming it too costly and offered him J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings instead. Boorman was allowed to shop the script elsewhere, but no studio would commit to it. Returning to his original idea of the Merlin legend, Boorman was eventually able to secure deals that would help him do Excalibur. Much of the imagery and set designs were created with his original vision of The Lord Of The Rings in mind, and it has been noted that certain scenes are reminiscent of Monty Python's 1975 comedy film, Monty Python And The Holy Grail.According to Boorman, the film was originally three hours long; among the scenes that were deleted from the finished film, but featured in one of the promotional trailers, was a sequence where Lancelot rescued Guenevere from a forest bandit.Boorman cast Nicol Williamson and Helen Mirren opposite each other as Merlin and Morgana, knowing that the two were on less than friendly terms due to personal issues that arose during a production of Macbeth seven years earlier. Boorman verified this on the Excalibur DVD commentary, saying he felt that the tension on set would come through in the actors' performances.

"A devastating picture of a country in the midst of a revolution it doesn't understand and cannot control" (Vincent Canby, NY Times). "Remarkable and dark...with black and bitter humor, and a striking visual quality" (Faber Companion to Foreign Films). Winner of the FIPRESCI Prize and OCIC Award at the 1978 Berlin Film Festival. In Persian with English subtitles.
