Elections in Croatia
Regular elections in Croatia are mandated by the Constitution and legislation enacted by Parliament. The presidency, Parliament, county prefects and assemblies, city and town mayors, and city and municipal councils are all elective offices. Since 1990, five presidential elections have been held. During the same period, eight parliamentary elections (including two for the upper house when the parliament was bicameral) were also held. In addition, there were six nationwide local elections. Croatia is expected to elect 12 members of the European Parliament after its accession to the EU in the scheduled 2014 European Parliament election (which is planned to include Croatia).
The President of Croatia is elected to a five-year term by a direct vote of all citizens in a two-round system, requiring runoff elections if no candidate wins more than 50 percent of votes in the first round. Members of Parliament are elected to a four-year term in ten multi-seat constituencies, with additional members elected in special constituencies reserved for the Croatian diaspora and national minorities. As of November 2011, legislation provides for the election of 151 members of the unicameral parliament. Out of 25 political parties which won seats in Croatian parliamentary elections held since 1990, only five have won ten seats or more in any one parliamentary election. Those were the Croatian Democratic Union, the Croatian Peasant Party, the Croatian People's Party – Liberal Democrats, the Croatian Social Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party of Croatia. The county prefects, city and town mayors are elected to four-year terms by a majority of votes cast within applicable local government units, with a runoff election if no candidate achieves a majority in the first round of voting. Members of county, city and town councils are elected to four-year terms through proportional representation, with the entire local government unit as a single constituency.

Vesna Pusić
Vesna Pusić (pronounced [ʋɛ̂sna pǔːsitɕ]; born 25 March 1953) is a Croatian sociologist and politician who served as a First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs in the centre-left Cabinet of Zoran Milanović. She is known as outspoken liberal and an advocate of European integration, gender equality and LGBT rights.
After becoming involved in politics in the early 1990s, Pusić served three consecutive terms as MP, having been elected to the Croatian Parliament in the 2000, 2003, and 2007 parliament elections. She also ran in the 2009–10 presidential election, coming in fifth out of twelve candidates. During her 2008–2011 parliament term she chaired the parliamentary committee for tracking the progress of Croatia's accession negotiations with the European Union. She also held the post of Vice-President of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR).
Pusić is president of the Croatian People's Party – Liberal Democrats.

Croatia (
i/kroʊˈeɪʃə/ kroh-AY-shə; Croatian: Hrvatska [xř̩ʋaːtskaː]), officially the Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Republika Hrvatska, 
listen ), is a sovereign state at the crossroads of Central Europe, Southeast Europe, and the Mediterranean. Its capital city is Zagreb, which forms one of the country's primary subdivisions, along with its twenty counties. Croatia covers 56,594 square kilometres (21,851 square miles) and has diverse, mostly continental and Mediterranean climates. Croatia's Adriatic Sea coast contains more than a thousand islands. The country's population is 4.28 million, most of whom are Croats, with the most common religious denomination being Roman Catholicism.
The Croats arrived in the area of present-day Croatia during the early part of the 7th century AD. They organised the state into two duchies by the 9th century. Tomislav became the first king by 925, elevating Croatia to the status of a kingdom. The Kingdom of Croatia retained its sovereignty for nearly two centuries, reaching its peak during the rule of Kings Peter Krešimir IV and Dmitar Zvonimir. Croatia entered a personal union with Hungary in 1102. In 1527, faced with Ottoman conquest, the Croatian Parliament elected Ferdinand I of the House of Habsburg to the Croatian throne. In 1918, after World War I, Croatia was included in the unrecognised State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs which seceded from Austria-Hungary and merged into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. A fascist Croatian puppet state existed during World War II. After the war, Croatia became a founding member and a federal constituent of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a constitutionally socialist state. In June 1991, Croatia declared independence, which came into effect on 8 October of the same year. The Croatian War of Independence was fought successfully during the four years following the declaration.

Croatian wine
Croatian wine (vino, pl. vina) has a history dating back to the Ancient Greek settlers, and their wine production on the southern Dalmatian islands of Vis, Hvar and Korčula some 2,500 years ago. Like other old world wine producers, many traditional grape varieties still survive in Croatia, perfectly suited to their local wine hills. Modern wine-production methods have taken over in the larger wineries, and EU-style wine regulations have been adopted, guaranteeing the quality of the wine.
There are currently over 300 geographically defined wine regions, and a strict classification system to ensure quality and origin. The majority of Croatian wine is white, with most of the remainder being red, and only a small percentage is rosé wines. In 2010, Croatia ranked 30th in wine producing countries with an estimated 50,000 tonnes.
Wine is a popular drink in Croatia, and locals traditionally like to drink wine with their meals. Quite often, the wine is diluted with either still or sparkling water - producing a drink known as gemišt (a combination of white wine and carbonated water), and bevanda (a combination of red wine and still water).

Stipe Mesic, once a member of Yugoslav presidency and a former close aide to the late President Franjo Tudjman, succeeded him on Tuesday as the second president in the country's nine-year-long history.
The 65-year-old Mesic was beaming with joy as the nearly complete results showed that he defeated Drazen Budisa with a clear majority of 56.21 percent of votes. Budisa conceded defeat already late Monday.
In his presidential message, Mesic indicated that they have a lot of work ahead, particularly towards entering the European Union and NATO as soon as possible.
Not only does he intend to visit foreign countries, but he also invite foreign leaders to come to Croatia to them that Croatia is a part of Europe and the world."
It is widely believed that it was the late President Franjo's authoritarianism and nationalism that brought Croatia to political and economic isolation.
Tudjman, who led Croatia to independence from former Yugoslavia in 1991, died on Dec. 10.
Mesic also vowed to "work closely" with the new government and parliament, dominated by Budisa's Social Liberals' coalition with Social Democrats.
The United States ambassador, William D. Montgomery, personally congratulated Mesic on his victory.
Mesic will be inaugurated president on Feb. 18.
Mesic will enjoy wide presidential authority for up to eight months, when the parliament is expected to make legal changes to return the center of policy-making to the legislature.
The Jan. 3 parliamentary balloting ended Tudjman's conservative Croatian Democratic Union's nine-year-long grip on power.
Both Mesic and Budisa promised to accept curtailing of presidential powers, pledge to cooperate with the West, respect neighboring Bosnia's borders and allow the return of Serb refugees.
The similarity of their political messages apparently prompted many to skip the vote - the turnout Monday was 61.48 percent, some 15 percent lower than during the first round.
Mesic also will likely be most determined in reducing Croatia's long-term financial and political support to Croats in neighboring Bosnia, whose extremist leaders sought to annex parts of that country to Croatia proper.

Stipe Mesic, once a member of Yugoslav presidency and a former close aide to the late President Franjo Tudjman, succeeded him on Tuesday as the second president in the country's nine-year-long history.
The 65-year-old Mesic was beaming with joy as the nearly complete results showed that he defeated Drazen Budisa with a clear majority of 56.21 percent of votes. Budisa conceded defeat already late Monday.
In his presidential message, Mesic indicated that they have a lot of work ahead, particularly towards entering the European Union and NATO as soon as possible.
Not only does he intend to visit foreign countries, but he also invite foreign leaders to come to Croatia to them that Croatia is a part of Europe and the world."
It is widely believed that it was the late President Franjo's authoritarianism and nationalism that brought Croatia to political and economic isolation.
Tudjman, who led Croatia to independence from former Yugoslavia in 1991, died on Dec. 10.
Mesic also vowed to "work closely" with the new government and parliament, dominated by Budisa's Social Liberals' coalition with Social Democrats.
The United States ambassador, William D. Montgomery, personally congratulated Mesic on his victory.
Mesic will be inaugurated president on Feb. 18.
Mesic will enjoy wide presidential authority for up to eight months, when the parliament is expected to make legal changes to return the center of policy-making to the legislature.
The Jan. 3 parliamentary balloting ended Tudjman's conservative Croatian Democratic Union's nine-year-long grip on power.
Both Mesic and Budisa promised to accept curtailing of presidential powers, pledge to cooperate with the West, respect neighboring Bosnia's borders and allow the return of Serb refugees.
The similarity of their political messages apparently prompted many to skip the vote - the turnout Monday was 61.48 percent, some 15 percent lower than during the first round.
Mesic also will likely be most determined in reducing Croatia's long-term financial and political support to Croats in neighboring Bosnia, whose extremist leaders sought to annex parts of that country to Croatia proper.

Croatia is busy preparing for municipal elections on Sunday.
It will be the first time Serbs vote in Croatia since they rebelled against the republic's secession from Yugoslavia in 1991.
The elections will be crucial in setting up local co-government in the region - a key test of the ability of Serbs and Croats to bury their hatreds and live together again.
Meanwhile, Croatian President Franjo Tudjman has held his final election rally in the capital Zagreb.
About 150-thousand Serbs live in the area known as eastern Slavonia on Croatia's far eastern border with Serbia.
On Sunday, it will be the first time Serbs vote in Croatia since they rebelled against the republic's secession from Yugoslavia in 1991.
Serbs captured about one-third of Croatian territory during the war, but Croatian troops retook most of it in offensives in 1995.
Eastern Slavonia was placed under U-N administration and is to return to Croatian government rule in July.
The elections are crucial to establishing local co-government of the region, which will be a key test of the ability of Serbs and Croats to bury their hatreds and suspicions and live together again.
One local official was optimistic.

"I am sure that these are the last elections when displaced persons are going to vote as displaced persons, and not only this, but I truly believe that this is the last time that we are going to have displaced persons in our beautiful country."

Tudjman told the crowd there had been those who had not wanted an independent Croatia, but who had had to accept the reality of one because of the determination of the Croatian people.

Out of a possible twelve they took a surprising six with the ruling Social Democrats and their two junior partners only taking five after previously being tipped to take the lion's share.
Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic tried some positive spin saying the election was historic and a key milestone on a path marked by years of difficult reforms.
But in the end only 20 per cent of eligible voters turned out to cast a ballot. Analysts explained the lack of enthusiasm due to domestic economic problems as well as by the developing debt crisis which is still rattling the euro zone. They also said politicians had failed to campaign on on EU-related issues.
Croatia becomes the bloc's 28th member on July 1. That's when the new MEPs will take up their seats but they will only serve for one year until Europe-wide elections in 2014.

The party that lead Croatia to independence conceded defeat on Tuesday in the first parliamentary elections since the death of President Franjo Tudjman.
An opposition coalition led by an ex-communist and a former dissident seemed poised to beat Tudjman's Croatian Democratic Union in a landslide.
Reactions on the streets of Zagreb to the initial results were largely favourable.
The opposition coalition was said to be leading by a margin of 2-1 in a majority of districts with 61 percent of Monday's vote counted.
The coalition of Social Democrats and the Social Liberals seemed likely to take 71 seats in Croatia's lower house.
The Croatian Democratic Union will have 40 seats and a loose coalition between four other parties holds 24 seats, according to unofficial results.
Newspapers declared the apparent opposition victory a debacle for the ruling party, which has governed Croatia since the country won independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
Many people heading to work in the capital Zagreb on Tuesday welcomed the news.

One elderly woman who voted for the present government felt only apathy over the defeat of Tudjman's party.

But younger voters welcomed the change.

The final figure depends on the turnout of Croat expatriates who have the right to vote abroad in 47 countries.
But the opposition coalition seems so far ahead, those votes are unlikely to sway the election.

http://www.euronews.com/ Polls have opened in Croatia's first European Parliament elections. 12 candidates must be chosen to represent the country when it officially becomes a member of the European Union on July 1st. Just under 4 million people are eligible to cast their ballot and voter turnout is expected to be low overall because of a general lack of enthusiasm due to the financial crisis in Europe and a lacklustre campaign.
A total of 40 political parties with over 300 candidates will run in the election. However, polls have suggested that the ruling Social Democrats and its two junior coalition partners will take half of the seats, while the rest will be filled by the conservative HDZ party and the Labour Party.
After Slovenia, Croatia is the only other former Yugoslav republic to join the European Union so far.

Stipe Mesic, once a member of Yugoslav presidency and a former close aide to the late President Franjo Tudjman, succeeded him on Tuesday as the second president in the country's nine-year-long history.
The 65-year-old Mesic was beaming with joy as the nearly complete results showed that he defeated Drazen Budisa with a clear majority of 56.21 percent of votes. Budisa conceded defeat already late Monday.
In his presidential message, Mesic indicated that they have a lot of work ahead, particularly towards entering the European Union and NATO as soon as possible.
Not only does he intend to visit foreign countries, but he also invite foreign leaders to come to Croatia to them that Croatia is a part of Europe and the world."
It is widely believed that it was the late President Franjo's authoritarianism and nationalism that brought Croatia to political and economic isolation.
Tudjman, who led Croatia to independence from former Yugoslavia in 1991, died on Dec. 10.
Mesic also vowed to "work closely" with the new government and parliament, dominated by Budisa's Social Liberals' coalition with Social Democrats.
The United States ambassador, William D. Montgomery, personally congratulated Mesic on his victory.
Mesic will be inaugurated president on Feb. 18.
Mesic will enjoy wide presidential authority for up to eight months, when the parliament is expected to make legal changes to return the center of policy-making to the legislature.
The Jan. 3 parliamentary balloting ended Tudjman's conservative Croatian Democratic Union's nine-year-long grip on power.
Both Mesic and Budisa promised to accept curtailing of presidential powers, pledge to cooperate with the West, respect neighboring Bosnia's borders and allow the return of Serb refugees.
The similarity of their political messages apparently prompted many to skip the vote - the turnout Monday was 61.48 percent, some 15 percent lower than during the first round.
Mesic also will likely be most determined in reducing Croatia's long-term financial and political support to Croats in neighboring Bosnia, whose extremist leaders sought to annex parts of that country to Croatia proper.

Croatia is busy preparing for municipal elections on Sunday.
It will be the first time Serbs vote in Croatia since they rebelled against the republic's secession from Yugoslavia in 1991.
The elections will be crucial in setting up local co-government in the region - a key test of the ability of Serbs and Croats to bury their hatreds and live together again.
Meanwhile, Croatian President Franjo Tudjman has held his final election rally in the capital Zagreb.
About 150-thousand Serbs live in the area known as eastern Slavonia on Croatia's far eastern border with Serbia.
On Sunday, it will be the first time Serbs vote in Croatia since they rebelled against the republic's secession from Yugoslavia in 1991.
Serbs captured about one-third of Croatian territory during the war, but Croatian troops retook most of it in offensives in 1995.
Eastern Slavonia was placed under U-N administration and is to return to Croatian government rule in July.
The elections are crucial to establishing local co-government of the region, which will be a key test of the ability of Serbs and Croats to bury their hatreds and suspicions and live together again.
One local official was optimistic.

So far, more than 150-thousand people have registered to vote in the region.
They include local Serbs, Croatian refugees like these in a camp near Osijek who will vote in absentia, and Serb refugees from other parts of Croatia.

About 3-thousand Serbs have left the region ahead of the elections to hear the results elsewhere, apparently fearing possible reprisals after Croatian rule is restored.
At a U-N checkpoint at the crossing into Eastern Slavonia, soldiers carefully monitor the traffic prior to the election.
At the main square in Zagreb Friday evening, Croatia's ruling party, the Croatian Democratic Union, held its final pre-election rally.
Some 2-thousand people gathered to hear Croatian President Franjo Tudjman speak.
Tudjman told the crowd there had been those who had not wanted an independent Croatia, but who had had to accept the reality of one because of the determination of the Croatian people.
He promised to take his rule all the way to Vukovar in Eastern Slavonia.

Polling stations will be open all day Sunday, with the first unofficial results expected early Monday.
Here in Vukovar, in eastern Slavonia, the Serbs drove away Croat residents and nearly levelled the city when they took it in November 1991.

Out of a possible twelve they took a surprising six with the ruling Social Democrats and their two junior partners only taking five after previously being tipped to take the lion's share.
Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic tried some positive spin saying the election was historic and a key milestone on a path marked by years of difficult reforms.
But in the end only 20 per cent of eligible voters turned out to cast a ballot. Analysts explained the lack of enthusiasm due to domestic economic problems as well as by the developing debt crisis which is still rattling the euro zone. They also said politicians had failed to campaign on on EU-related issues.
Croatia becomes the bloc's 28th member on July 1. That's when the new MEPs will take up their seats but they will only serve for one year until Europe-wide elections in 2014.

Elections in Croatia
Regular elections in Croatia are mandated by the Constitution and legislation enacted by Parliament. The presidency, Parliament, county prefects and assemblies, city and town mayors, and city and municipal councils are all elective offices. Since 1990, five presidential elections have been held. During the same period, eight parliamentary elections (including two for the upper house when the parliament was bicameral) were also held. In addition, there were six nationwide local elections. Croatia is expected to elect 12 members of the European Parliament after its accession to the EU in the scheduled 2014 European Parliament election (which is planned to include Croatia).
The President of Croatia is elected to a five-year term by a direct vote of all citizens in a two-round system, requiring runoff elections if no candidate wins more than 50 percent of votes in the first round. Members of Parliament are elected to a four-year term in ten multi-seat constituencies, with additional members elected in special constituencies reserved for the Croatian diaspora and national minorities. As of November 2011, legislation provides for the election of 151 members of the unicameral parliament. Out of 25 political parties which won seats in Croatian parliamentary elections held since 1990, only five have won ten seats or more in any one parliamentary election. Those were the Croatian Democratic Union, the Croatian Peasant Party, the Croatian People's Party – Liberal Democrats, the Croatian Social Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party of Croatia. The county prefects, city and town mayors are elected to four-year terms by a majority of votes cast within applicable local government units, with a runoff election if no candidate achieves a majority in the first round of voting. Members of county, city and town councils are elected to four-year terms through proportional representation, with the entire local government unit as a single constituency.
