The Vaca Mountains are one of the most prominent landmarks of Solano County, with a steep ridge on the east side that rises abruptly 1,000 feet (305m) or more above the foothills below. The range begins at Suisun Marsh in a broad, low-elevation saddle that also contains the city of Fairfield and Travis Air Force Base, and separates the mountains to the northwest from an outlier of low hills called the Montezuma Hills. The Vaca Mountains then trend 17.5 miles (28km) to the north and end at Putah Creek Canyon. The average width of the range is about 5.5 miles (9km), with an area of 61,775 acres (250km2) that is mostly undeveloped. Mt. Vaca at an elevation 2,818 feet (859m) is the highest summit, and the high point of Solano County, but the backbone of the range is the Blue Ridge, a prominent ridgetop that maintains an elevation of over 1,900 feet (579m) for several miles.

The glory hole spillway acts as a drain for Lake Berryessa, a man-made lake created when the Monticello Dam was built in the Napa Valley, northern California in the 1950s. The Monticello Dam reportedly provides irrigation and drinking water for around 600,000 people in the area.It can hold 526 billion gallons before the glory hole streams into action and excess water needs to be drained away.

In 1536, when slave catchers near modern day Culiacán, Mexico, saw four bedraggled travellers approach them in the desert heat, they were shocked to discover that the men were Christians, and spoke Spanish. They were the last surviving members of the ill-fated Narváez expedition to Florida in 1527 and they had lived in the wild expanse of North America, cut off from their homeland and the rest of civilisation as they knew it, for the last nine years...
