In The Shadows: The extraordinary men and women of the Intelligence Corps – 02
New book by Lord Ashcroft - published on 08 November 2022. The Intelligence Corps is one of the smallest and most secretive elements of the British Army. It has existed in various guises since the early twentieth century, but it was only formally constituted in July 1940. Whether carrying out surveillance work on the street, monitoring and analysing communications, working on overseas stakeouts, receiving classified information from a well-placed contact or interrogating the enemy in the heat of war, a hugely diverse range of people have served in the Corps, often supplementing their individual...

GERMANY: US ARMY 5TH CORPS AND 1ST ARMOURED DIVISION EXERCISES
(23 Oct 1995) English/Nat
While U.S. President Clinton and Russian President Yeltsin in New York are debating the problems to be faced by NATO led forces in Bosnia, a huge contingent of U.S. soldiers are preparing in Germany for their tour of the war-torn Balkan nation.
Thousands of GI's from the U.S. Army's 5th Corps and First Armoured Division are undergoing intensive training to take part in NATO's Rapid Reaction Force.

They will be part of a 60,000-strong NATO force sent into Bosnia to enforce a yet to be signed peace accord. Russia says it is considering sending in troops, but has not yet committed itself to doing so. President Yelts...

These war games in Germany are designed to teach the 10,000 American soldiers how to manage tanks, tactical gunnery and anti-mine operations.
They will be part of a 60,000-strong NATO force sent into Bosnia to enforce a yet to be signed peace accord. Russia says it is considering sending in troops, but has not yet committed itself to doing so. President Yeltsin disagrees with the U-S over plans to place the contingent under NATO command.
U-S led negotiations between the Serbs, Bosnians and Croats are scheduled for the end of the month in Ohio. The leaders of the warring parties will attend, and are expected to come closer to a peace agreement.
The NATO forces will try and keep the peace and ensure the warring parties are adhering to the peace agreement once it is signed.
Not all of the GIs training at the base in Grafenwoehr are clear about why they are going to the Balkans.
SOUNDBITE:
"Like defending my country, defending the borders of the United States. I would fight beyond the death if I have to. As my country, I would defend it to my dying breath. But they obviously don't care because they have been fighting for three years now and it's.. they're not getting anywhere. I don't see why we have to go in there and step in between them."
SUPER CAPTION: U.S. soldier from Florida, Third Squadron of Fourth Cavalry.
Others say they sympathise with the difficulties faced by the Bosnians.
SOUNDBITE:
"I said, I mean if they want us there, we should go. I feel there are people out there.. certain people can't go to work or live because mortars, snipers and stuff like that. I feel that that's wrong. Myself, I feel that is wrong."
SUPER CAPTION: U.S. soldier from
Alabama with 1st Armoured Division.
The soldiers are learning how to detect mines, and will try to teach Bosnians how to avoid them. There are an estimated eight (m) million mines hidden in the country. They're also training how to communicate effectively with soldiers from different sides at the checkpoints --- despite the language difficulties.
