Vaid is CEO of the Vaid Group LLC, which works with social justice innovators, movements and organizations to address structural inequalities based on sexual orientation, gender identity, race, gender and economic status.
She was the Director of the Engaging Tradition Project at the Center for Gender and Sexuality Law at Columbia Law School from 2011 to 2015. The project focused on the way tradition is used in movements for gender and sexuality to inform, enable or limit the movement. Vaid spent ten years working in global philanthropic organizations, serving as Executive Director of the Arcus Foundation (2005-2010) and Deputy Director of Governance and Civil Society Unit of the Ford Foundation (2000-2005).
Vaid is the founder of LPAC, the first lesbian Super PAC, which was launched in July 2012. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Gill Foundation, which is dedicated to achieving equal opportunity for all, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. She is founder of The Vaid Group, a consulting practice that advises individuals and organizations working to achieve social justice in a wide range of fields.

Urvashi Vaid was awarded the Susan J. Hyde Award for Longevity in the Movement, sponsored by the Wild Geese Foundation.
This award was given virtually at the 2022 Creating Change Conference, on Saturday, March 19.
Urvashi was introduced by Sue Hyde with a personal account of Urvashi's impact with co-founding the Creating Change Conference. Kate Clinton, Urvashi's partner, presented the award with comedic and endearing initial remarks.
We morn the passing of Urvashi on May 14, 2022 and commemorate her impact to our organization and the movement.

At the 2022 Spirit of Justice Award Dinner, GLAD honored Urvashi Vaid, a visionary activist and beloved member of the GLAD family who passed away earlier this year. Urvashi was one of GLAD's first staffers and the 2014 Spirit of Justice honoree. In her speech at that Spirit of Justice Dinner, she described joining the movement in the '80s. She shared that at the time: "I believed in utopias and hard work."
