What is Urban Density?
Incubate Video Productions was employed by South African Cities Network, we created an animated explainer video that details the thinking and philosophy behind Density and how it is being used to build better cities here in South Africa. At Incubate Productions this is something we specialise in, taking complex topics and turning them into eye catching and easy to understand animated videos. Watch this explainer video and get a better idea of how South African Cities Network is using the science of Urban Density to develop a public transport framework to improve the lives of all us city dwellers. If you're anything like me, you're already tired of how the "15-minute city" idea has been co-opted into the culture wars. It's really this simple: all things being equal, having more stuff that you need and want on a day-to-day basis within a reasonable walking distance is better than not having it. I suppose whatever argument there is is over what "all things being equal" consists of.
Today I take you on a tour of Valencia, Spain, and talk about how Valencians enjoy something more like a 5-minute city, probably without thinking about it (or ev...

Population Density 101: A Visual Guide to Suburbs and Skyscrapers
Cities are fundamentally about living close to things you want, like jobs, schools, stores, services, and infrastructure, and that means living close to other people who want to access these amenities too. But cities and neighbourhoods vary enormously in density based on laws, geography, preferences, demographics, and historical development patterns. In this video we take a tour of population density in the U.S. and Canada, from semi-rural suburbs to ultra-dense downtowns.

The Incredible Density of Hong Kong
Hong Kong is one of those places, alongside Singapore and Manhattan, that often gets cited as a failure of urbanism — an overdose of density, an example of what you don’t want your city to look like. But there’s a reason Hong Kong is like this, and why other cities probably won’t end up the same way. We should stop using Hong Kong as our density punching bag.

5 Myths About Urban Density

It's true that poor people cluster in dense urban areas. But density is not the cause of their poverty. It's cheaper to supply people with water, power, transportation, and consumer goods when they all live in one place. Poor people prefer to live where their cost of living is low.

Dense urban centers may pollute a lot, but since they contain many more people than rural areas or suburbs, they pollute relatively less per person (Jones and Kammen, 2014). 1. Urban density (or “overpopulation”) causes poverty
It's true that poor people cluster in dense urban areas. But density is not the cause of their poverty. It's cheaper to supply people with water, power, transportation, and consumer goods when they all live in one place. Poor people prefer to live where their cost of living is low.
2. Urban density is bad for the environment
Dense urban centers may pollute a lot, but since they contain many more people than rural areas or suburbs, they pollute relatively less per person (Jones and Kammen, 2014). Urbanites commute less and in more efficient ways than suburbanites. A 100-unit apartment requires less energy to heat than 100 separate homes because there is less heat loss. By restricting the density of cities, we force people into the suburbs, where they pollute much more per person.
3. Urban density is ugly
Paris has a density of over 21 thousand people per square kilometer. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
4. Urban density only serves the interests of "developers"
Restricting the supply of housing hurts the people who want to live in apartments and condominiums, not the people who want to build them. Building anything larger than a single-family home requires coordination, and developers perform that coordination. Developers are not being corrupt when they try to build things, but they are being corrupt when they conspire with local governments to restrict others from building housing.
5. You need "affordable housing" to make housing affordable
Affordability is not a trait of a home, it's a trait of the market. The smallest, ugliest apartment could cost millions of dollars if the location is desirable and the supply of homes is restricted. Even luxury apartments make housing more affordable by increasing the supply of housing.
