The United Paramount Network (UPN) was an Americanbroadcasttelevision network that launched on January 16, 1995. The network was originally owned by Chris-Craft Industries/United Television; Viacom (through its Paramount Television unit, which produced most of the network's series) turned the network into a joint venture in 1996 after acquiring a 50% stake in the network, and then purchased Chris-Craft's remaining stake in 2000; UPN was spun off to CBS Corporation in December 2005, when CBS and Viacom split up into two separate companies.
As a result of CBS Corporation and Time Warner's joint announcement on January 24, 2006, that the companies would respectively shut down UPN and competitor The WB to launch a new joint venture network – The CW – later that same year, UPN shut down on September 15, 2006, with select programs from both it and The WB (which itself shut down two days later) moving to The CW when it launched three days after the former of the two predecessors ceased operations, on September 18.
The channel 57 frequency was originally assigned to Easton, Pennsylvania where it was home to WGLV-TV, a dual ABC/DuMont affiliate owned by the Easton Express newspaper, which first signed on the air June 26, 1953. Unfortunately, the station struggled to get an audience mainly because it was a UHF station at a time when television manufacturers were not required to offer UHF tuners. Its fate was sealed in 1957, when the FCC collapsed the Lehigh Valley into the Philadelphia television market. The Philadelphia stations built tall towers in the city's hilly Roxborough neighborhood, adding Easton and the rest of the Lehigh Valley to their city-grade coverage. WGLV went dark on November 1 of that year, and several years later the FCC reassigned the channel 57 allocation to Philadelphia.

After Fox shocked the nation by expanding the Big 3 to the Big 4, TV veteran Paramount perked up, took notice, and promptly got to work creating a network they hoped would see the same level of success as Fox, and would change the Big 4 to the Big 5. The Downfall of UPN – and Viacom
https://www.connro.com/
For over a decade, the big 4 TV networks had a new competitor, launched by Paramount, called the United Paramount Network. After Fox showed the TV world that there was room for one more network, Paramount was determined to make their mark. However, if you check your channel guide today, the letters UPN are nowhere to be found. From passing on the biggest show in television and broadcasting a failed football league to the corporate mess at the very top of parent company Viacom that sealed UPN's fate, we explore all of the factors that led to the demise of the network that, at one point, seemed destined to change the television landscape.

Why UPN’s Black Sitcoms Ended - Here's Why

So how did a network that launched with big dreams and gigantic corporate backing fall by the wayside? The story is long, so grab a snack, sit back, and listen up as we explore the factors that led to UPN’s rise and eventual fall.
The New York Times article I used briefly in the video with the headline “UPN Network Cancels 4 of Its 5 Programs” is really entitled “UPN Cancels 3 of Its 4 Programs”. However, the article was mistaken, and was even amended in a later issue to account for a series that was excluded from the original article.

WPSG - 2010 - AM News Open (Pre-Standardization)
In late 2009, WPSG cancelled its "WakeUPNews" co-production with traffic.com and began airing a 7-9 newscast with KYW's existing morning personnel.
The newscast used the "Eyewitness News On The CW" branding introduced on the 10pm news, but for the most part used the CBS-style graphics in use on KYW. This was likely for logistical reasons, as the stations share a control room. For this same reason, KYW's :25 and :55 Early Show cut-ins are simulcast on both stations.

WPSG Foulup - What Year Is This Again?
Look carefully. It's 2006, and this is the end credits to Dr. Phil, which UPN 57 was running as a 10pm news alternative. At the end, they decide to slap up a graphic to accompany the Roger Rose voiceover.
Unfortunately, they chose not only an erroneous graphic boasting that Moesha was up next - they chose a graphic that itself dates back to 2000 and boasts the UPN logo dropped in 2002 (and the station logo style dumped in 2001). While the accident was an innocent one, it begs the question - why was this old graphic still in the servers at 5th and market to begin with?
I've included the "Wake Up News" promo at the end to remind everyone that yes, indeed, this was recorded in 2006.

-- Full disclosure: I made this video when I was 15 and had no clue what I was doing. This video is a bit of a mess and I am not proud of it. I especially think my characterizations of the network's conception and of its focus on Black audiences are lacking. Read more at https://www.connro.com/corrections --
After Fox shocked the nation by expanding the Big 3 to the Big 4, TV veteran Paramount perked up, took notice, and promptly got to work creating a network they hoped would see the same level of success as Fox, and would change the Big 4 to the Big 5. In 1995, UPN was launched to achieve just that. However, in spite of high hopes and enormous dollar signs, UPN was never able to escape a reputation of mediocrity, and after 11 years of little success, time was up and the plug was pulled on UPN.

On September 1, 2023, WPSG switched from a CW affiliated to an independent station. Channel 57 had been affiliated with The CW since 2006.
Previously, it was operated by UPN from 1995 to 2006, independent from 1985-1995, PRISM from 1983 to 1985, SelecTV from 1981 to 1983 and Financial News Network from 1981 to 1983.
WPSG was previously named Philly57 when it was independent in 1985.

WPSG finally launched a 10pm newscast on February 2, 2009. Some form of a 10pm newscast on the station had been long-speculated ever since it moved in with KYW. The only surprise is that it took this long. Dave Huddleston, formerly of Fox 29, fronts the half-hour newscast.
Not sure about this look, honestly. It's a cheap in-house modification of the superior stuff found on KYW. The announcement is bland. And they commissioned Enforcer NG3...

UPN) ... This isn’t completely surprising because UPN often struggled as a network and wasn’t big on giving underperforming shows much time unless the audience really came out in force for them.
