In which I explore the interesting idea of Australia. A country that in spite of perhaps the most destabilising culture on earth, seems to persist with a comparatively above average stability and quality of life. Our Tall Poppy syndrome, an Australian mindset that belittles success and power.
the full script:
Australians sense of humour is to understate things immensely
It is incredible that Australian culture permits the ability to make such gross understatements and still maintain some level of legitimately. People think that anarchists threaten the legitimacy of countries and authority. But in reality anarchists are the exact opposite. There are no people more serious about authority and state than those people, they die out of their belief that they are true and exist...

It funds hospitals and affordable health care to villages on the edge of a national parks, in return for a pledge not to cut down trees. The pledges are monitored, and the result has been a dramatic decrease in deforestation rates and an increase in the health of the local population. Thanks to your generous contributions, the founders are spreading the idea to other countries. Adelaide (Listeni/ˈædəleɪd/ ad-ə-layd)[8] is the capital city of the state of South Australia, and the fifth-most populous city of Australia. In June 2014, Adelaide had an estimated resident population of 1.3 million.[1] South Australia, with a total of 1.7 million inhabitants, has the most centralised population of any state in Australia, with more than 75 percent of its people living in greater Adelaide, while the other population centres in the state are relatively small.
The demonym "Adelaidean" is used in reference to the city and its residents.[9][10] Adelaide is north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, on the Adelaide Plains between the Gulf St Vincent and the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges which surround the city. Adelaide stretches 20 km (12 mi) from the coast to the foothills, and 90 km (56 mi) from Gawler at its northern extent to Sellicks Beach in the south.
Named in honour of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, queen consort to King William IV, the city was founded in 1836 as the planned capital for a freely-settled British province in Australia. Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, designed the city and chose its location close to the River Torrens, in the area originally inhabited by the Kaurna people. Light's design set out Adelaide in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parklands. Early Adelaide was shaped by prosperity and wealth — up until the Second World War, it was Australia's third largest city.[11] It has been noted for early examples of religious freedom, a commitment to political progressivism and civil liberties. It has been known as the "City of Churches" since the mid-19th century.[12]
As South Australia's seat of government and commercial centre, Adelaide is the site of many governmental and financial institutions. Most of these are concentrated in the city centre along the cultural boulevard of North Terrace, King William Street and in various districts of the metropolitan area. Today, Adelaide is noted for its many festivals and sporting events, its food and wine, its long beachfronts, and its large defence and manufacturing sectors. It ranks highly in terms of liveability, being listed in the Top 10 of The Economist Intelligence Unit's World's Most Liveable Cities index in 2010,[13] 2011,[14] 2012[15] and 2015.[16] It was also ranked the most liveable city in Australia by the Property Council of Australia in 2011,[17] 2012[18] and 2013
Before European settlement[edit]
Prior to its proclamation as a British settlement in 1836, the area around Adelaide was inhabited by the indigenous Kaurna Aboriginal nation (pronounced "Garner" or "Gowna").
Kaurna culture and language was almost completely destroyed within a few decades of the European settlement of South Australia in 1836.[20] However, extensive documentation by early missionaries and other researchers has enabled a modern revival of both language and culture

More evidence of 'out of place' architecture, possibly affected by a mud flood / catastrophe, at Port Arthur in Tasmania, Australia.
They say Port Arthur was built in 3 years by unskilled convicts, and no explanation of where or how the brick, stone and mortar came from. Is this more evidence of a worldwide mud flood?

Melbourne (/ˈmɛlbərn/ (listen) MEL-bərn;[note 1] Woiwurrung: Naarm[9]) is the capital and most-populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in Australia and Oceania.[1] Its name refers to a metropolitan area of 9,993 km2 (3,858 sq mi),[10] comprising an urban agglomeration of 31 local municipalities[11] known as Greater Melbourne, although the name is also commonly used specifically for the local municipality of City of Melbourne based around its central business area. The city occupies much of the northern and eastern coastlines of Port Phillip Bay and spreads into the Mornington Peninsula and the hinterlands towards the Yarra Valley, the Dandenong and Macedon Ranges. It has a population of 5 million (19% of the population of Australia), and its inhabitants are commonly referred to as "Melburnians".[note 2]

Home to Indigenous Australians for over 40,000 years, the Melbourne area served as a popular meeting place for local Kulin nation clans. A short-lived penal settlement was built at Port Phillip, then part of the British colony of New South Wales, in 1803, but it was not until 1835, with the arrival of free settlers from Van Diemen’s Land (modern-day Tasmania), that Melbourne was founded.[14] It was incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837, and named after the then British Prime Minister, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.[14] In 1851, four years after Queen Victoria declared it a city, Melbourne became the capital of the new colony of Victoria.[15] During the 1850s Victorian gold rush, the city entered a lengthy boom period that, by the late 1880s, had transformed it into one of the world's largest and wealthiest metropolises.[16][17] After the federation of Australia in 1901, it served as the interim seat of government of the new nation until Canberra became the permanent capital in 1927.[18] Today, it is a leading financial centre in the Asia-Pacific region and ranks 27th globally in the 2020 Global Financial Centres Index.[19]
Melbourne is home to many of Australia's best-known landmarks, such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the National Gallery of Victoria and the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building. Noted for its cultural heritage, the city gave rise to Australian rules football, Australian impressionism and Australian cinema, and has more recently been recognised as a UNESCO City of Literature and a global centre for street art, live music and theatre. It hosts major annual international events, such as the Australian Grand Prix and the Australian Open, and also hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Melbourne consistently ranked as the world's most liveable city for much of the 2010s.[20]
The Melbourne Airport, also known as the Tullamarine Airport, is the second-busiest airport in Australia, and the Port of Melbourne is the nation's busiest seaport.[21] Its main metropolitan rail terminus is Flinders Street station and its main

A tram (also known as tramcar; and in North America known as streetcar, trolley or trolley car), is a rail vehicle which runs on tracks along public urban streets (called street running), and also sometimes on separate rights of way. The lines or networks operated by tramcars are called tramways. Tramways powered by electricity, which were the most common type historically, were once called electric street railways. However, trams were widely used in urban areas before the universal adoption of electrification and, thus, the other methods of powering trams is listed below under "History".
Tram lines may also run between cities and/or towns (for example, interurbans, tram-train), and/or partially grade-separated even in the cities (light rail). Very occasionally, trams also carry freight. Tram vehicles are usually lighter and shorter than conventional trains and rapid transit trains, but the size of trams (particularly light rail vehicles) is rapidly increasing. Some trams (for instance tram-trains) may also run on ordinary railway tracks, a tramway may be upgraded to a light rail or a rapid transit line, two urban tramways may be connected to an interurban, etc.
For all these reasons, the differences between the various modes of rail transportation are often indistinct.
As already explained, most trams today use electrical power, usually fed by an overhead pantograph; in some cases by a sliding shoe on a third rail or trolley pole. If necessary, they may have dual power systems - electricity in city streets, and diesel in more rural environments.
Trams are now included in the wider term "light rail",[1][full citation needed] which also includes segregated systems.

This article is about the village and resort in Italy. For other uses, see Portofino (disambiguation).
Portofino (Italian pronunciation: [ˌpɔrtoˈfiːno]; Ligurian: Portofin [ˌpɔɾtuˈfiŋ]) is a comune located in the Metropolitan City of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The town is clustered around its small harbour, and is known for the colourfully painted buildings that line the shore.[3] Since the late 19th century, Portofino has attracted tourism of the European aristocracy and it is now a resort for the world's jet set
History
Pliny the Elder (AD 23 – AD 79) referred to Portus Delphini (Port of the Dolphin) as on the Ligurian coast between Genoa and the Gulf of Tigullio.
The village is mentioned in a diploma from 986 by Adelaide of Italy, which assigned it to the nearby Abbey of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte. In 1171, together with the neighbouring Santa Margherita Ligure, it was included in Rapallo's commune jurisdiction. After 1229 it was part of the Republic of Genoa. The town's natural harbour supported a fleet of fishing boats, but was somewhat too cramped to provide more than a temporary safe haven for the growing merchant marine of the Republic of Genoa.
In 1409, Portofino was sold to the Republic of Florence by Charles VI of France, during the period that he was also lord of the Genoese Republic, but when the latter was ousted from Genoa the Florentines gave it back. In the 15th century it was a fief of families such as the Fieschi, Spinola, Adorno, and Doria.
In 1815, it became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia and, from 1861, of the unified Kingdom of Italy.
In the late 19th century, first British, then other Northern European aristocratic tourists began to visit Portofino, which they reached by horse and cart from Santa Margherita Ligure. Aubrey Herbert and Elizabeth von Arnim were among the more famous English people to make the area fashionable. Eventually, more expatriates built expensive holiday houses, and by 1950, tourism had replaced fishing as the town's chief industry, and the waterfront was a continuous ring of restaurants and cafés.

Music From: A-A
In which I explore the interesting idea of Australia.
There are no people more serious about authority and state than those people, they die out of their belief that they are true and exist.
It is Australian culture that is a true threat to all ideas of empire and control. How can a state enforce the law on a nation of people that would look at the moon crashing down on earth and in his last words say. “Oh, that doesn’t look too good”.
There is nothing more damaging to a structured society than Australian humour. Some of the funniest books I have ever read were those about Prisoners of War on the Thai Burma railway! These are people that suffered some of the most brutal treatment humanly possible, that which was delivered under the imperial Japanese.
Upon facing death, almost every Australian used their final breath by making course and obscene jokes and bawdy humour. When people from the USS Housten were facing death as their ship sank surrounded by a fleet of Japanese Navy in the Java sea, they prayed to god and said their goodbyes, cried and did all the expected things one might do facing death's door. When the HMAS Perth sank in the same place and faced the same fleet, the Australians jumped ship and expressed their panic and senses of impending doom by taking the piss out of their own lives.
Here is another, more modern example from a book by our former PM Kevin Rudd, when he and some other Queensland Politicians visited China and accidentally bore witness 1989 Tiananmen Square protests
“Wayne broke the silence by observing dryly that he had heard the chinese were very welcoming of foreign guests, and I have plainly gone out of my way to organise a welcome of this order of magnitude for a visiting queensland delegation to the chinese capital.”
One of History's largest and infamous protests was joked about as a welcoming party for what was at the time a backwater state from a small and barely modernised country.
[skit]
Oh my god you decapitated my arm!
“Nah it's fine just rub some aloe vera on it”
[skit]
This observation isn’t a new thing. Foreigners find this aspect of Australians incredibly unusual. Our form of humour in this line I hear is actually quite hard for many people to identify. Especially Americans. The CIA says that Australia and America share very similar cultures, but you take the english and anglo away and in reality we are both stark in our cultural style. Where Americans glorify and deify success, every fibre of the Australian spirit is built towards belittling all forms of popularity. Part of that comes from the scottish tendency to back the underdog, but a lot seems to be an Australian exclusive.

RE "I’ve been very busy since the end of the pandemic."
We are still technically in a pandemic, because we still fit the technical definition of a pandemic -- i.e. an infectious disease on more than one continent. But as far as my life is concerned -- and the countries where most of my subscribers live -- the pandemic is over. I am fully vaccinated, as are most people I come into contact with. There is still a tiny risk even for vaccinated people, but there's also a risk of dying from seasonal flu.
I have visited a dozen countries in the last few months, and not one of them still has restrictions on mask-wearing, social distancing or freedom of movement. Shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, theaters and sports arenas are all open, with no restrictions. I see no difference to life now than before the pandemic. So de facto, yes, the pandemic is over, and I have been back to work -- hence the reason I've been busy.
If you are unvaccinated, and therefore vulnerable, then of course the pandemic is still very real. You can still get infected, and you have a much higher chance of dying. But that's your choice. I can't put my life on hold for you. See my videos on vaccination and Covid-19 and get informed.
Similarly, if you live in China, or a country where vaccinations are low and there are still restrictions, I'm sorry. There the pandemic is also still very real. But I can't stay home until every single country is over this. In Europe, Australia, North America and many other places, the pandemic is no longer a part of everyday life for the vast majority who are vaccinated.
