A Potted History: Black Burnished Ware with Grace
We collaborated with Hampshire Cultural Trust to bring you a fascinating video series for this year’s Festival of Archaeology! ‘A Potted History – Exploring the Iron Age/Roman Transition in Hampshire’ explores how pottery has helped us to better understand the impact of the Roman conquest on people’s lives.
Making a pot has always been a science as well as an art. Fashions and tastes dictated what was thought valuable or beautiful, but we can learn a lot from the techniques and raw materials that were used, too.
Delving a little deeper into the science, we will join archaeologist and STEM ambassador, Grace, to find out more about Black Burnished Wares. Coiled by hand, these dark vessels are made from a grainy clay that can be rich in fragments of iron ores, flint, quartz, shale and mica....

Orkney Grooved Ware
Grooved Ware pottery was Britain's first flat bottomed pottery, originating in the islands of Orkney it spread throughout the British isles towards the end of the fourth millennium BC. It is the predominant ceramic form found at Durrington Walls, from the time of the main construction phase at Stonehenge. Probably used as storage and brewing vessels some of these pots were very large indeed but it's recently been suggested that even medium sized pots may have taken weeks to make. I'm currently making a number of replica Neolithic grooved ware pots for the Skara Brae visitor centre, but how long does it take to make one?

Who Were Neolithic Orkney’s GROOVED WARE People?
During the Neolithic Orkney's population of farmers and pastoralists, known as the Groove ware people, inhabited extensive village settlements, built huge megalithic complexes and developed monumental funerary architecture. Neolithic Orkney was buzzing with activity, both practical and ceremonial.
In the first part of this two episode series I discuss the main features of Neolithic Orkney's settlements, including those found at the famous sites of Skara Brae and the Ness of Brodgar. In around 2500 BCE these villages were abandoned and, at least in the case of the Ness of Brodgar, a giant feast was held where hundreds of cattle were sacrificed. No-one knows why these people left their settlements, but what's for sure, is that while they were there they certainly left their mark in the land...

Why Was ORKNEY An Ancient MEGALITHIC Hub?
The megalithic landscape of Orkney is extensive and includes the largest stone circle in Scotland known as the Ring of Brodgar. More than five thousand years ago the Neolithic Orcadians built megalithic henge monuments, complex settlements and huge chambered cairns, as well as erecting standing stones. No-one knows what inspired the megalith builders of Orkney, what their rituals were or why they abandoned their villages in the middle of the third millennium BCE.
However, it's possible that, just as with the grooved pottery style they created, their megalith building tradition spread to the south of England, culminating in the complicated landscape of Stonehenge and Avebury. In this video I discuss the megalithic sites on Orkney, as well as the famous Maeshowe Chambered Cairn, a monument...

Coiled by hand, these dark vessels are made from a grainy clay that can be rich in fragments of iron ores, flint, quartz, shale and mica.
Grace will show you the beauty of these wares that remained valuable to their owners long after the Roman’s introduced new fashions and processes to the country.
