The unique selling proposition (USP) or unique selling point is a marketing concept first proposed as a theory to explain a pattern in successful advertising campaigns of the early 1940s. The USP states that such campaigns made unique propositions to customers that convinced them to switch brands. The term was developed by television advertising pioneer Rosser Reeves of Ted Bates & Company. Theodore Levitt, a professor at Harvard Business School, suggested that, "Differentiation is one of the most important strategic and tactical activities in which companies must constantly engage." The term has been used to describe one's "personal brand" in the marketplace. Today, the term is used in other fields or just casually to refer to any aspect of an object that differentiates it from similar objects.
Definition
In Reality in Advertising Reeves laments that the USP is widely misunderstood and defines it in three parts, summarized here:
Each advertisement must make a proposition to the consumer—not just words, product puffery, or show-window advertising. Each advertisement must say to each reader: "Buy this product, for this specific benefit."

How do you differentiate yourself from the competition? Many companies tend to have only one thing in mind when it comes to their unique selling proposition (USP): pricing. But undercutting the competition isn't the best tactic because it can cause a price war that can continue to lower your margins. That’s why Philip VanDusen shares key strategies to come up with a great unique selling proposition to make sure your customers choose you over the rest. Adaptability, speed and service are among the top indicators of differentiation, which are things that many small businesses tend to have power over as opposed to larger ones who take longer to make changes and develop products. Through personalization and customization, you can deliver a unique product that stands out to customers. Philip also shares his 3-step process for identifying your unique selling proposition, including customer research, competitive analysis and how to leverage it for customer success. Because even if you’re unable to make your product or service unique, you can still make how you sell that product or service the key factor that sets you apart from the rest.

Unique selling proposition (USP) is the one thing that makes your business better than the competition.Your company's core values are its unique selling proposition. It's what distinguishes your company from competitors and explains to them why they ought to pick you.
Businesses with a unique selling proposition stand for something specific, and that becomes what you are known for, as opposed to trying to be recognized for everything.
When they first start out, many companies make the error of trying to represent everything. They strive to be all things to all people and do everything well. They wish to be renowned for offering the best items at the most competitive pricing. They seek out the finest cuisine at the lowest costs. They want to be renowned for serving the greatest burgers, delectable salads, and succulent steaks and ribs.
You don't become well-known for anything when you try to be recognized for everything.
The key differentiating feature that distinguishes your company from your rivals is the true definition of a unique selling proposition.
How does this actually appear? Let's examine a few instances.
Web design, social media marketing, SEO, copywriting, conversion optimization, PPC, and other services are all provided by company number one. The second company provides copywriting and SEO services but not web design, social media marketing, conversion optimization, etc.
Let's now take a look at a potential client: a professional CEO who is seeking for an SEO copywriter to create content for his website. He is also familiar with both businesses.
Since company one is most known for its site design, he automatically thinks of them as a web design firm and is unaware that they also provide SEO copywriting services. He thinks of company two as an SEO copywriting firm because that is what they specialize in.
Which company do you suppose he would pick when the time comes to select one to offer this service? Who is more well-known: for web design in general or for SEO copywriting specifically?
Number two is the answer.
There are, of course, always exceptions. Since they have a huge staff and numerous divisions, a large digital marketing agency may establish a reputation for offering a wide range of services and can provide all of them.
However, rather than attempting to accomplish everything, it is better for a smaller company to take market share away from a more established rival by standing up for one item and becoming well-known for it.
Remember, your company needs to stand for something because that's what you'll become recognized for if you want to stand out and "have a distinctive selling proposition." It is impossible to support every position.

USP stands for Unique Selling Proposition or Unique Selling Point. USP refers to the main benefit that a company is promoting when selling its products and services.
USP Definition:
USP is also called unique selling point. It is the unique benefit that a company uses to sell its products or services. It's another way for a company to communicate differentiation: "Here's why you should buy from us instead of them."
Why is USP Important?
A company's USP will guide its Marketing Strategy. Brand messaging and positioning will be geared around the main benefit a company is selling. Quality, price, customization/options, ease of use, availability/speed, service, accessibility, and sustainability are just some examples of USPs.

What is a USP or Unique Selling Proposition? This is the thing that makes your offer, what you are selling, different from what other people offer.
