Ian Smith's Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) in Southern Rhodesia
In this video we discuss events leading up to the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) which was led by Ian Smith in Southern Rhodesia, this would strain relations between Britain and Rhodesia which is modern day Zimbabwe.
The country would eventually be placed on sanctions by Britain and the international community, this is a critical part of Zimbabwe History.

KOSOVO | An Illegal Country?
In February 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia. But was it legal? And is Kosovo a state? In 2010, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) presented its Advisory Opinion on Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence (UDI) from Serbia. Although it is the most important ruling the Court has ever made on secession, there is considerable confusion about what the Court really said. For example, did it say that Kosovo is a state - as many now claim?

Kosovo's declaration of independence did not violate international law -- UN court (updated)
United Nations, 22 July 2010 - Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia in February 2008 did not violate international law, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) said today as the United Nations court released its advisory opinion on the issue.
The ICJ, also known as the World Court, was asked by the General Assembly to give its opinion — which is non-binding — on the legality of the independence declaration by the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government (PISG) of Kosovo.

Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia in February 2008 bitterly divided the international community. While it was supported by the United States and most of the European Union, it was opposed by Russia, China and a number of other countries around the world. In the months that followed, Serbia took the issue of Kosovo's UDI before the United Nations General Assembly and asked for an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the legality of the declaration of independence. This was delivered on 22 July 2010. In its Opinion, the Court was clear that the declaration did not in fact violate general international law. However, it was also explicit that it took no position on whether Kosovo was an independent state. Nor did the Court question the legality of the decision of countries to recognise Kosovo as a country. This in turn raises an important issue. Did Serbia in fact ask the ICJ the wrong question?

Footage of Ian Smith, Prime Minister of the illegal white minority government of Rhodesia, being interviewed two weeks after the unilateral declaration of independence.
Transcript:
INTERVIEWER: "Today, independent Rhodesia is exactly two weeks old. Do you think the world at large has accepted the 'fait accompli?"
MR. SMITH: "Well, this is quite a difficult question. I think that probably most of the other countries in the world would say to you that they would like to see this run for a little longer before accepting it, but I do believe that certain people who foolishly thought that this would fail are now having second thoughts, and must have come to the conclusion that far from failing, this has been a greater success than even we ourselves thought."
INTERVIEWER: "May I enlarge slightly here. The Organisation of African Unity has suggested invading Rhodesia - in other words, they do not appear to have accepted the fact that Rhodesia is now an independent country. Do you think there is any likelihood of this happening?"
MR. SMITH: "No. I must be honest and say that I don't treat this really seriously, and moreover, I don't think there are many people in the world who treat this very seriously".
INTERVIEWER: "The past two weeks must have been extremely worrying from your point of view. Which has been the most crucial period for Rhodesia?"
MR. SMITH: "Well, I suppose the most crucial period was the immediate period after our assumption of independence, because of the uncertainty. We were stepping into the unknown to a certain extent...as to what outside world reaction was, and what they were going to do. So it was the period immediately afterwards."
INTERVIEWER: "Do you consider Mr. Wilson's sanctions against Rhodesia as appeasement measures to the United Nations and the Afro-Asian block?"
MR. SMITH: "Well, I can tell you that a lot of the evidence put before me and the advice given to me is in the direction you have indicated - that Mr. Wilson has to do this in order to satisfy the United Nations and the Afro-Asian block Indeed I think I am on record as having said previously, and this does not only apply to Mr. Wilson - his predecessors as well - that they conceded the justification for our independence: the case we had put forward. But they did say that what we had to consider was the rest of the world, world opinion, and I don't think it is unfair or inaccurate of me to say that this is something that weighs very heavily with the British Government".
INTERVIEWER: "What is the purpose of recalling Parliament at this time?"
MR. SMITH: "Really this is in keeping with the laws of our country, which make it obligatory for us to recall Parliament after a State of Emergency has been declared, and this is why we are recalling Parliament."
INTERVIEWER: "Is that the only significance in the recall of Parliament?"
MR. SMITH: "Yes."
INTERVIEWER: "There will be no new legislation put before the house?"
MR. SMITH: "No, we have no intention of introducing new legislation and we did not all along, and had it not been for the Emergency then Parliament would not have been recalled I don't think."

IN CONGRESS, JULY 4, 1776
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America
The Declaration of Independence was a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as independent states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. John Adams put forth a resolution earlier in the year which made a formal declaration inevitable. A committee was assembled to draft the formal declaration, to be ready when congress voted on independence. Adams persuaded the committee to select Thomas Jefferson to compose the original draft of the document, which congress would edit to produce...

George Washington Reads The Declaration of Independence
Hi Friends:
I have written much about the question of, if it weren't for sporting events, or if we weren't in a school ... how often would we hear the National Anthem, how often would we see, read, or hear those founding documents of our country ... such as "The Declaration of Independence?" About, not long ago, we had to memorize-and say aloud-such things as the "Preamble" or "Gettysburg Address?" Etc.
So ... here is the reading of "The Declaration of Independence," which was the way the History Channel closed out its recent mini-series, "Sons of Liberty."
I was able to find this version ... with sub-titles ... so that we could also read the words, as Jason O'Mara ended his portrayal of George Washington in the series ...

Adams persuaded the committee to select Thomas Jefferson to compose the original draft of the document, which congress would edit to produce the final version. The Declaration was ultimately a formal explanation of why Congress had voted on July 2 to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the
American Revolutionary War. The Independence Day of the United States of America is celebrated on July 4, the day Congress approved the wording of the Declaration.

Here is how the History Channel described the series: "A dramatic interpretation of events," and that the goal of the miniseries was "to capture the spirit of the time, convey the personalities of the main characters, and focus on real events that have shaped our past."
Do I wish they didn't include some of the scenes?
Of course ... But, how about this list of characters:
Ben Barnes as Samuel "Sam" Adams
Marton Csokas as General Thomas Gage
Ryan Eggold as Dr. Joseph Warren
Michael Raymond-James as Paul Revere
Rafe Spall as John Hancock
Henry Thomas as John Adams
Jason O'Mara as George Washington
Dean Norris as Benjamin Franklin
Emily Berrington as Margaret Kemble Gage
Sean Gilder as Thomas Hutchinson
Kevin J. Ryan as John Pitcairn
Shane Taylor as Captain Thomas Preston
Jimmy Akingbola as Peter Salem
Here's the way the series ended:
