Is Edmonton A Good City To Move To In 2024? | First Impressions of Downtown + City Attractions
Edmonton is the second largest city in Alberta and it has faced a HUGE growth in population in the last couple of years. Being the provincial capital, Edmonton does have an abundance of economic and cultural activities going on, while still considered to be a fairly affordable large city in Canada. Sitting right on the North Saskatchewan River, Edmonton has an abundance of green space within their River Valley, it has a great entertainment district downtown and of course is know for West Edmonton Mall, the largest retail space in all of Canada! Join me and my Mom as we tour around some of the most central parts of the city and let me know in the comments what your experience has been living/visiting Edmonton!

There are a lot of things that make Edmonton an interesting city to me that I'm excited to share in this video. In this video I briefly cover Edmonton's history, population, skyline as well as a few things that make it unique. Edmonton is a great city! Edmonton is the capital city of
Alberta and is the northernmost city with over one million people on the continent. There are a lot of things that make Edmonton an interesting city to me that I'm excited to share in this video. In this video I briefly cover Edmonton's history, population, skyline as well as a few things that make it unique. Thanks for watching: Edmonton Overview | An informative introduction to Edmonton, Alberta.

- Edmonton was named City of Champions due to the volunteer response to a tornado in 1987. The sporting success in the 1980s may have helped contribute to that nickname though.

Calgary and Edmonton
The biggest two cities in Alberta, Canada
Heck, two of the biggest in ALL of Canada- I’m not joshing you. Calgary is the 4th biggest and Edmonton is the 5th. About 300 kilometers apart, or a 3 hour drive.
Combined they make up more than 70% of the population of Alberta and 8% of the population of Canada.
Both are part of the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor, the most urbanized part of Alberta and one of the wealthiest regions in the country.
And there’s a rivalry. Oh you better believe there’s some trash talkin’ goin’ on between the two. The rivalry even has a name- the “Battle of Alberta,” although that’s, more often than not, just used to describe the sports rivalries of the two cities. Like the football rivalry between the Edmonton Elks and the Calgary Stampeders. Or one of the greatest hockey rivalries in history between the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers. Heck, there’s even a rivalry between the major universities in each city, the University of Alberta, which is in Edmonton, and the University of Calgary. (yeah that’s in Calgary)
So perhaps to fan the flames of this rivalry even further, I am making this completely fact-based comparison video so you can make up your OWN mind about which city is better, ok?

Airplane! (alternatively titled Flying High!)[5] is a 1980 American parody film written and directed by the brothers David and Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams in their directorial debuts,[6] and produced by Jon Davison. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson.[6] It is a parody of the disaster film genre, particularly the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!, from which it borrows its plot and central characters,[7] also drawing many elements from Airport 1975 and other films in the Airport series. It is known for its use of surreal humor and fast-paced slapstick comedy, including visual and verbal puns, gags, running jokes, and obscure humor.
Released by Paramount Pictures, it was a critical and commercial success, grossing $171 million worldwide against a budget of $3.5 million.[8] Its creators received the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Comedy, and nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and for the BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay.
Since its release, its reputation has grown substantially. It was ranked 6th on Bravo's '100 Funniest Movies'.[9] In a 2007 survey by Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, it was judged the second-greatest comedy of all time, behind Monty Python's Life of Brian.[10] In 2008, it was selected by Empire magazine as one of 'The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time', and in 2012 was voted #1 on 'The 50 Funniest Comedies Ever' poll.[11] In 2010, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[12][13][14]

Plot
Ex-fighter pilot Ted Striker is a traumatized war veteran turned taxi driver. Because of his pathological fear of flying and subsequent "drinking problem"—he splashes beverages anywhere but into his mouth—Ted has been unable to hold a responsible job. His wartime girlfriend, Elaine Dickinson, now a flight attendant, breaks off her relationship with him before boarding her rostered flight from Los Angeles to Chicago. Ted abandons his taxi and buys a ticket on the same flight to try to win her back. Once on board, however, Elaine continues to reject him.
After the in-flight meal is served, the entire flight crew and several passengers fall ill. Passenger Dr. Rumack discovers that the fish served during meal service has caused food poisoning. With the flight crew incapacitated, Elaine contacts the Chicago control tower for help and is instructed by tower supervisor Steve McCroskey to activate the plane's autopilot, a large inflatable dummy pilot dubbed "Otto", which will get them to Chicago but not be able to land the plane. Elaine and Rumack convince Ted to take the controls. When Steve learns Ted is piloting, he contacts Ted's former commanding officer, Rex Kramer—now serving as a commercial pilot—to help talk Ted through the landing procedure. Ted becomes uneasy when Kramer starts giving orders and he briefly breaks down amid more wartime flashbacks. Elaine and Rumack both bolster Ted's confidence and he manages to once again take the controls.
As the plane nears Chicago, the weather worsens, complicating the landing. With Elaine's help as co-pilot and Rex's guidance from the tower, Ted is able to land the plane safely, despite the landing gear shearing off, and the passengers suffer only minor injuries. Rescue vehicles arrive to help unload the plane. Impressed by Ted's display of courage, Elaine embraces and kisses him, rekindling their relationship. The two watch as "Otto" takes control of the plane, inflates a female companion, and takes off.

A tram (also known as tramcar; and in North America known as streetcar, trolley or trolley car), is a rail vehicle which runs on tracks along public urban streets (called street running), and also sometimes on separate rights of way. The lines or networks operated by tramcars are called tramways. Tramways powered by electricity, which were the most common type historically, were once called electric street railways. However, trams were widely used in urban areas before the universal adoption of electrification and, thus, the other methods of powering trams is listed below under "History".
Tram lines may also run between cities and/or towns (for example, interurbans, tram-train), and/or partially grade-separated even in the cities (light rail). Very occasionally, trams also carry freight. Tram vehicles are usually lighter and shorter than conventional trains and rapid transit trains, but the size of trams (particularly light rail vehicles) is rapidly increasing. Some trams (for instance tram-trains) may also run on ordinary railway tracks, a tramway may be upgraded to a light rail or a rapid transit line, two urban tramways may be connected to an interurban, etc.
For all these reasons, the differences between the various modes of rail transportation are often indistinct.
As already explained, most trams today use electrical power, usually fed by an overhead pantograph; in some cases by a sliding shoe on a third rail or trolley pole. If necessary, they may have dual power systems - electricity in city streets, and diesel in more rural environments.
Trams are now included in the wider term "light rail",[1][full citation needed] which also includes segregated systems.

VIA Rail Canada 1 - Saskatoon to Edmonton (August 5th, 2022)
This is a ride on VIA Rail Canada Train 1, the famous trans-continental train between Vancouver and Toronto! "The Canadian".
This trip is filmed between Saskatoon, SK and Edmonton, AB. Departing at 10:45am Mountain time and arriving in Edmonton at 8pm. Filmed on August 5th, 2022.
On this journey two GMDD F40PH-3 locomotives (6426 built in 1987 and 6451 built in 1989) are pulling a total of 21 Budd Carriages, dating from the 1950s. We start out seated in car 8119. Later, near the SK/AB provincial boundary at Unity we move to Skyline car 8509, which was the last car open to Economy class passengers.
Our train makes one intermediate stop - at Wainwright, AB.

VIA Rail #1, The Canadian, Edmonton to Vancouver, a Train Buff Perspective, March 2023
This is our trip from Edmonton to Vancouver on VIA #1, The Canadian, in March 2023. This shows my vantage point of a person interested in the railroading as well as the ride. We met or passed 27 trains between Jasper and Kamloops on this trip. The CN line west of Edmonton is very busy with freight trains. We previously rode on the train in 2005 with a berth, very fun. This time, the one bedroom is something we wanted to try. I booked it on a Black Friday sale at the end of November, because we had 2 nights on the train heading west instead of 1 night heading east. The deal was very good.
I'd recommend travelling westbound on the VIA train in March as the days are 12 hours long, the daytime portion is between Jasper and Kamloops, the cost is 40% less, the train is shorter, only 10 cars plu...

VIA Rail's Canadian #2 ~ Vancouver to Edmonton ~ Summer Solstice 2022
31-Jul-2022 - Does anyone actually read these descriptions?
When I uploaded my first train video last winter, I had all of ten subscribers, and the most popular post, a few hundred views, was part of my Adventures of the Tea Grannies series. Local jaunts around the Salish Sea, pretty gardens, flowers, and yummy afternoon teas had been my YouTube offerings for the very few family members and friends who knew I had a channel. Within a week, that train video doubled all my other videos combined, blowing me away.
That's when I began to really explore the vast rail-fan community on YouTube. I mention three of YouTube channels I like in this video, but there are many others. With that first train video [https://youtu.be/pBvzZprCrh0], I just cobbled together the odd bits of footage that I had....

VIA Rail's Canadian #1 ~ Edmonton to Vancouver ~ Beyond the Salish Sea ~ Episode 1
As the title indicates, I've decided that this latest adventure is in a class of its own, hopefully not for long. Other than ferries to and from the Mainland [https://www.bcferries.com/], a couple of taxis, and the connector coach [https://bcfconnector.com/], I wasn't on the Salish Sea this time. After two years of not seeing my family thanks to Covid-19, with all of them vaccinated and the eldest even boosted, I decided it was time to venture to the Prairies for Christmas. Naturally, it was astonishingly cold, something I'm a whingy wimp about. At some point over those holidays it occurred to me that I was in the perfect position to take VIA Rail [https://www.viarail.ca/en] home instead of the flight that I had booked. Therefore, it had to happen, and other than wishing I had packed some ...

VIA RAIL CANADA Business Class - What's It Like?
In early January this year, I needed to get from Toronto to London, Ontario, and there are a few options available.
Instead of subjecting myself to another flight on a Dash 8-400, I decided to try out VIA Rail Canada's Business Class, for a whole lot less!
See what I thought of VIA Rail Canada's impressively inexpensive Business Class in this special rail trip report!

I'd recommend travelling westbound on the VIA train in March as the days are 12 hours long, the daytime portion is between Jasper and Kamloops, the cost is 40% less, the train is shorter, only 10 cars plus the baggage car and a tail end buffer car. Passengers are laid back, friendly, and very chatty. The VIA Rail staff is also very friendly, a trait about their Winnipeg employees! It feels like a throwback to the 1950's. Many of them got on in Toronto for 4 nights on the train. If you get on in Winnipeg you get 3 nights on the train. We got on in Edmonton and spent 2 nights and one day on the train with a midnight departure. We had brunch and dinner on the train during our full day, and breakfast on the train as we arrived into Vancouver, a 33 hour journey. As well, the views are better because there are no leaves on the deciduous trees and the mountains are snow covered.
I really enjoy the dome car, watching meets, and watching the many searchlight singles flicker from clear (a lot of clear to stop signals actually) to red as we travel CTC territory on CN Rail's mainline. I really enjoy talking with other people on the train, and the dining car is a great place for these table conversations, but there is none of these conversations on the video. Sorry for the dirty windows.

With that first train video [https://youtu.be/pBvzZprCrh0], I just cobbled together the odd bits of footage that I had. With this offering, not only did I have significantly more daylight to work with thanks to the Summer Solstice, but also I realized that there are people from all over the world who may very well check this out, so I definitely did my best to share a little more Canadian history as I traversed one of the most historic routes in Western Canada.
I actually start this journey on another train, Vancouver's mass transit SkyTrain [https://www.translink.ca/schedules-and-maps/skytrain.aspx/], taking it to VIA Rail's Pacific Central Station [https://www.viarail.ca/en] to hop aboard its Canadian #2 to Toronto. I'll only go as far as Edmonton, the starting point for my winter video, because I have family there and had a reunion to attend. I'll spot a couple of other train travel opportunities along the way, the Rocky Mountaineer [https://www.rockymountaineer.com/] and West-Coast Express [https://www.translink.ca/schedules-and-maps/west-coast-express.aspx/] as well as the seriously big and historic steam engine locomotive 6015 in Jasper [http://www.visit-jasper.com/things-to-do/locomotive-6015-jasper-alberta-canada.html].
Other highlights of the route include the stunning farming community of Agassiz, the former gold rush boomtown of Yale [https://historicyale.ca/the-wickedest-little-settlement-in-british-columbia/#more-383], Simon Fraser's famous Hell's Gate http://www.hellsgateairtram.com/, and the stunning Pyramid Creek waterfall [https://bcparks.ca/explore/parkpgs/pyramid/].
The late-setting sun of the solstice allowed me to film the devastation in Lytton, which burned to the ground almost exactly a year earlier after setting Canada's heat record, indeed the temperature record for anywhere in the world north of 45° latitude to that point. I had planned to do this video in two parts, sticking to my personal limit of half an hour per video, until I realized that Lytton would end the first part on the most bleak example of climate change British Columbia has to offer. I prefer happy endings, so this is now my longest video by far. It is offered with love to all you train fans out there, and I hope you enjoy it! :-)

Therefore, it had to happen, and other than wishing I had packed some posh healthy treats for the day and a half long trip, it was utterly dreamy, the mountains loaded with Christmassy snow and nothing to do but look out the window. I do fear I'm hooked now, though. As much as I adore flying, I think it is time I started exploring more by rail. Stay tuned for further adventures Beyond the Salish Sea!
