After checking out of my hotel I stopped off at Glascarnoch Dam for some stunning views of Glascarnoch Loch and the valley below. It was close to another scenic spot that overlooked a picturesque pebble filled river surrounded by miles and miles of beautiful Scottish countryside. One of the incredible things about the North Coast 500 is just how much there is to see on route, especially on the spectacular west coast of Scotland.
I made my first stop of the day at a National Trust Scotland nature reserve called Corrieshalloch Gorge - a place famous for its mile-long canyon, woodland trails and a 45 metre waterfall known as the Falls of Measach. I decided to take a short walk across the Victorian-era suspension bridge to a viewpoint of the waterfall, and although the most dramatic views were from the bridge itself it was still great to get out and explore the area on foot.
Within a few hours I was back on the road again heading for Ullapool - one of the largest settlements in the area and a place noted for its bars, restaurants and nightlife. Sadly, as I was travelling in COVID-19 times all of the pubs and bars had strict social distancing guidelines and all live events and performances were cancelled, so I decided to explore the streets, ferry port and history of Ullapool rather than any social or entertainment venues.
Although small, there's plenty to see and do and it was good to take a leisurely walk around just to see what was about. I loved the row of quaint white terraced houses looking over Loch Broom and it was fun flying my drone over the boats out on the water - until it started to rain that is! The weather in Scotland is unpredictable at best and it was one of those days that kept flipping between sunny spells and showers, sometimes even both at the same time!
Ullapool was an important Herring Port and the village was enlarged over a hundred years ago for that reason. It's surrounded by Scottish hills and the vast waters of Loch Broom. If you're on the NC500 it's definitely worth a visit!

Ullapool is full of souvenir/craft shops, guest houses and hotels, it bustles all day long in summertime with people arriving off the ferry from Stornoway on Lewis or waiting for the next one. The town has a leisure centre with sports facilities and swimming pool, library, grocery shop, bank, butcher's shop, chemist (pharmacy/drug store), supermarket, post office and petrol stations. Boat trips are available to the nearby Summer Isles (see below).
Internet access is available at the Ullapool Book Shop near Lochbroom Hardware and The Captain's Cabin (crafts & gifts) which are all situated close to the ferry terminal.
Ullapool is a great centre for hillwalking (see below) and it's an ideal base for touring the beautiful landscape of the north-west Highlands. You might be able to spot some deer around here. Golf course - 9 holes split over the shores of Loch Broom and Ullapool River (telephone 01854 613 323). Tennis courts too.

Glimpses of Ullapool and Loch Broom, on the North Coast 500 in Wester Ross, north west Scotland. Ullapool is a small town on the shores of Loch Broom, from where the ferry goes over to Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides. Featuring Ardmair and Rhu Points, and finishing with glorious sunsets over Loch Broom.
Ullapool is our next destination on our NC500 Tour of the highlands of Scotland. Of the whole NC500 the drive from Durness to Ullapool was our favourite. The scenery is dramatic every mile of this journey. Loch after Loch, Mountain after Mountain, the magical beauty just blew us away. On reaching Ullapool we were lucky enough to find a sea front pitch at the Broomfield Holiday Park.

05:35 Arrive Ullapool
08:54 eBike Adventure
17:27 Corrieshalloch Gorge
Our main activity was an ebike ride East Rhidorroch. With almost 2000ft of elevation gain over some very remote highland this was a great adventure. We were rewarded with a hikers suspension bridge at the furthest point and then the beautiful Loch Achall on our return.
Download the ebike ride here: https://www.wikiloc.com/mountain-biking-trails/ullapool-72917964#wp-72917968
As we leave Ullapool heading south we stop after about 20 minutes to see the Corrieshalloch Gorge. Corrieshalloch is one of the most spectacular gorges of its type in the UK and the whole Canyon is about 1 mile long. Parking is limited here so arrive early! You'll only need about 30 minutes to see the suspension bridge, viewing platform and walk around the footpaths.

Ullapool is located in Scotland and lies in the North West Highlands. From its early beginnings as a small fishing port the town has grown due to its proximity to some wonderful walking and climbing Munros and Corbetts. The town has a camp site, Youth Hostel, Tesco store as well as a range of small independent shops, pubs and cafes. The town is known for its Fish 'n' Chips and attracts tourists from all over the world.
Ullapool (/ˈʌləpuːl/;Scottish Gaelic:Ulapul, [ˈuɫ̪apʰuɫ̪])
is a town of around 1,500 inhabitants in Ross-shire, Scottish Highlands. Despite its small size it is the largest settlement for many miles around and a major tourist destination of Scotland. The North Atlantic Drift passes Ullapool, bringing moderate temperatures. A few Cordyline australis or New Zealand cabbage trees are grown in the town and are often mistaken for palms.
History
On the east shore of Loch Broom, Ullapool was founded in 1788 as a herring port by the British Fisheries Society. It was designed by Thomas Telford.
The harbour is still the edge of the village, used as a fishing port, yachting haven, and ferry port. Ferries sail to Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides.
Many of the pivotal discoveries of the Victorian era that contributed to the development of the concept of plate tectonics were made in this area, and there are still regular international geological conferences.
