The Uganda Railway, colloquially known as the Lunatic Express or the Lunatic Line, is a railway system and former railway company dating to the colonial period. The line links the interiors of Uganda and Kenya with the Indian Ocean at Mombasa in Kenya.
Origins
The official approach, British and local, to both slavery and free porter labour included a genuine belief that the man doing the work had real interests which deserved concern and protection. No such concern was evident among parliamentarians, missionaries or administrators for those at work on the construction of the Uganda Railway. It was decided to build the railway as quickly as possible; its construction was viewed almost as a military attack—casualties were inevitable and might be large if the objective were to be attained and momentum not lost.
Built during the Scramble for Africa, the Uganda Railway was the one genuinely strategic railway to be constructed in tropical Africa at that time. 2,498 workers would die during its construction.
Uganda (/juːˈɡændə/yew-GAN-də or /juːˈɡɑːndə/yew-GAHN-də), officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by South Sudan, to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the southwest by Rwanda, and to the south by Tanzania. Uganda is the world's second most populous landlocked country after Ethiopia. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, shared with Kenya and Tanzania, situating the country in the African Great Lakes region. Uganda also lies within the Nile basin, and has a varied but generally a modified equatorial climate.
Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a large portion of the south of the country, including the capital Kampala. The people of Uganda were hunter-gatherers until 1,700 to 2,300 years ago, when Bantu-speaking populations migrated to the southern parts of the country.
The Queen's position vis-a-vis Uganda was entirely separate from her role in any other country. The Queen's title when she was head of state in independent Uganda was: Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen of Uganda and of Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth. Her constitutional roles were mostly delegated to the Governor-General of Uganda. The following Governors-General held office:
Uganda adopted a new constitution in 1963 which abolished the monarchy. Uganda became a republic within the Commonwealth. However, the new Ugandan state was deliberately not referred to as a republic, and the constituent native kingdoms (such as Buganda) continued in existence. Following the abolition of the monarchy by the proclamation of the State of Uganda on 9 October 1963, the Kabaka (King) of Uganda, Edward Mutesa II, became the first President of Uganda. The description "State" implied that the post-Commonwealth realm was not a republic but instead a "federation of tribal kingdoms". Uganda did not become a republic de jure until 1966 with Obote's conflict with President Edward Mutesa II.
Uganda railway extends passenger train services to Mukono, aims to ease traffic congestion
Train passenger services by the Uganda Railway Corporation have been extended to Mukono Municipality. For a long period, the service has been available between Kampala and Namanve.
The service is expected to decongest the busy Kampala - Jinja road if travelers who have been plying the route using commuter taxis, personal cars, and boda boda bikes, start using the passenger train. Uganda Railway Corporation officials say that in the next three years, they are to transform the rail sector to cover more areas in the country. The railway corporation has today celebrated 123 years of existence. #NTVNews #NTVTonight #NTVWeekendEdition

Uganda signs $3 billion deal for Standard Gauge Railway construction | PANORAMA
This week on Monday marked a significant milestone for Uganda, as Ministry of Works officials signed a $3 billion deal, or approximately 10.9 trillion shillings, for an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction tender with Turkey’s Yapı for the construction of the much-vaunted Standard Gauge Railway. The EPC tender is for the 272 km Malaba-Kampala route, with construction expected to start next month and a completion timeline of 48 months. The date is a bit unrealistic considering that nothing ever goes according to plan in Uganda. However, after being left in the cold by China’s Exim Bank on financing the project, insiders told NTV that this time around, the government is taking a shot at the project on its own by copying and pasting the Tanzania model of pooling the 10 trillion shilling...
