US-60, ARIZONA | Driving through the beautiful landscapes of Route 60 in Arizona. #timetraveler
U.S. Route 60 (US 60) is an east–west United States Highway within Arizona. The highway runs for 369 miles (594 km) from a junction with Interstate 10 near Quartzsite to the New Mexico State Line near Springerville. As it crosses the state, US 60 overlaps at various points: I-17, I-10, SR 77, SR 260, US 191, and US 180. Between Wickenburg and Phoenix, the route is known as Grand Avenue (or the Phoenix–Wickenburg Highway). From Tempe to Apache Junction, it is known as the Superstition Freeway.
The highway continues towards the southeast passing through Gold Canyon to an interchange with SR 79 at Florence Junction. US 60 curves towards the east at this junction as it heads to Superior and an interchange with SR 177. From Superior the highway begins to head towards the northeast to Miami an...

US 60 East - Superstition Fwy, feat. Snow Covered Superstition Mountains - Tempe to Apache Jct
A rare event for Arizona, this year the Superstition Mountains were dusted with snow not once but twice. Today, we get to see that remnants of the second event, perched high on the peaks of the mountains. It really is a sight to see, with snow on the ridges of the mountains and atop the highest, rockiest points. This storm also dumped around an inch to an inch and a half of rain which, while not a lot of some areas, our very dry, arid desert is not used to. Because of that, multiple roads wound up closed and the normally dry Gila and Salt Rivers ended up coming to life. It's really a sight to behold in the dusty desert, and I hope you enjoy.
I have already covered a lot of US 60's history in previous videos, but I'll go ahead and add a short synopsis. This portion of US 60 originally ran ...

The highway continues towards the southeast passing through Gold Canyon to an interchange with SR 79 at Florence Junction. US 60 curves towards the east at this junction as it heads to Superior and an interchange with SR 177. From Superior the highway begins to head towards the northeast to Miami and Claypool. It continues to a junction with SR 188 before passing through Midland City and turning towards the south towards Globe. US 60 curves back towards the east in Globe and continues to an intersection with US 70 and SR 77. US 60 heads northeast from the intersection concurrent with SR 77. The two highways curve towards the north before curving back towards the northeast as they head towards Show Low. As the highway continues towards the northeast it enters the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Within the reservation, the highway goes through a series of hairpin turns as it enters the Salt River Canyon. After descending into the canyon, the highway passes over the Salt River and enters the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The highway continues towards the northeast and enters Navajo County before reaching an intersection with SR 73. It continues northeast from this intersection to the city of Show Low.
In Show Low, US 60 intersects SR 260 and briefly runs concurrently with SR 260 as it heads northeast through the city. The concurrency with SR 77 also ends in Show Low as SR 77 heads north to Snowflake and US 60 continues towards the east. US 60 leaves the Show Low city limits and heads east to a junction with SR 61 which heads northeast towards Concho. US 60 continues east from this intersection before curving towards the southeast as it heads towards Springerville.
As it enters the Springerville city limits, it intersects and begins to run concurrently with US 180 and US 191. The three highways continue along the same alignment through Springerville, passing over the Little Colorado River. As the three highways continue through the city, they eventually split with US 180 and US 191 heading south towards Alpine and US 60 continuing towards the east. US 60 continues towards the east leaving the Springerville city limits and crossing over the state line into New Mexico. #timetraveler.

This portion of US 60 originally ran along what is now Apache Blvd, Main St, and Old West Highway in Tempe, Mesa, and Apache Junction respectively (although most of the road in Apache Jct is also Apache Blvd). It was cosigned along with US 70 and 80, with those two routes being truncated to Globe and Dallas, TX in the 1970s or so. Ironically US 80 predated both US 60 and 70, but it ended up being truncated due to redundancies in the Interstate and US Highway system.
The Superstition Freeway was signed as Arizona State Route 360 during construction. I believe this was done due to ADOT not wanting interstate travelers taking the freeway during construction, requiring multiple detours, among other things. Construction started in 1969 and took 22 years to complete. It originally consisted of just four lanes (two in each direction) and was already undergoing upgrades before the freeway was even completed. US 60 was moved onto the freeway and the SR 360 designation was tossed out in 1992. The Superstition Freeway is, of course, known for the infamous mountains located in the east valley that are prominently seen by eastbound traffic.

Please help us reach that goal!
Before I was able to continue my kicks on Route 66, I first had a to travel the highway that almost gave it's number to the Mother Road: US 60.
US 60 was originally supposed to run from Chicago, IL to Los Angeles, CA. This route was later disputed, as others had been working on a true trans-continental highway that they felt was more deserving of a '0' designation. AASHTO agreed, gave the original US 60 a new number of US 66, and gave the US 60 designation to the new, more southern route.
Originally running from Newport News, VA to Springfield, MO, the road pushed east and west. In 1930, the east end was pushed 40 miles east to Virginia Beach, VA and the west end to Amarillo, TX acting as a supplemental US 66 is many places. From there, US 60 replaced US 366 from Amarillo to Clovis, NM, and replaced US 70 from there to Springerville, AZ (US 70 was later moved to a more southern route with it's old western leg to Holbrook transferred to US 260, and ultimately US 180).
Finally, in 1932, US 60 reached it target of Los Angeles, and of course had to run through Phoenix to get there. It entered the valley on the Apache Trail, now co-routed with US 70, 80 and 89, through Apace Junction (now the Old West Hwy), which becomes Main St after entering Mesa, and later reverts to Apache Blvd as it enters Tempe. From there the highway curved north onto historic Mill Ave in downtown Tempe, crossed the historic Mill Ave bridges, and turns into Van Buren St as the road curved west. (I believe Washington St was Alternative 60/70/80/89).
From here, US 60, 70 and 89 moved to the diagonal-running Grand Ave (the only misplaced road in the grid system) where AZ-69 began at Van Buren. US 80 continued solo down Van Buren St, where it turned south on 17th Ave, and finally west on Buckeye Rd on it's way out of town.
SR 69 left Grand Ave to follow the Black Canyon Hwy. This was completely replaced in the valley by the Black Canyon Freeway, now I-17. US 89 departed in Wickenburg along what is now US 93. US 60 and 70 continued together into California at Blythe. Interstate 10 replaced US 60 and 70 from Brenda Junction to Beaumont, CA. As such, all three were co-routed along the new Interstate. In 1964, after California's Great Renumbering, US 60 and 70 were truncated to the Arizona border. AASHTO approved the 1966 truncations of US 60 to Brenda Junction and US 70 to Globe, so US 70 no longer enters the valley.
To this day, US 60 enters the Valley of the Sun on it's original alignment. Quickly thereafter, however, the Superstition Freeway picks up US 60 and moves traffic through Apache Junction and Mesa to the Tempe/Phoenix line. There, the Superstition ends and merges with the Maricopa Freeway, at this point I-10. From there it follows the Maricopa Freeway to the southern I-17 junction, where I-10 leaves to follow the Inner Loop Freeway and I-17 begins on the Maricopa.
At a 90 degree elbow in the freeway, nicknamed the Durango Curve, both I-17 and US 60 become the Black Canyon Freeway. US 60 leaves the freeway at Thomas Rd. There, US 60 makes a confusing series of quick lefts and rights to reach the historic Grand Ave. From there, US 60 leaves the valley heading west, also along it's historic alignment.
