USS Stethem (DDG-63)
USS Stethem (DDG-63) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the United States Navy. The ship was built in Pascagoula, Mississippi, starting on 11 May 1993. The ship was commissioned on 21 October 1995 and is based out of Yokosuka, Japan. The ship is named for Steelworker 2nd Class Robert Stethem, who was a Navy sailor killed by terrorists in Lebanon in the 1980s. Stethem has operated throughout the Pacific Ocean, as well as on deployments to the Persian Gulf. The ship remains on active duty, assigned to the Pacific Fleet, as of 2012.
Ship history
USS Stethem is the 13th Arleigh Burke-class Aegis destroyer. Construction of Stethem began on 18 May 1992 with the ship's keel being laid down at the Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi on 11 May 1993. She was launched on 17 June 1994 and was christened Stethem on 16 July 1994 by Mrs. Patricia L. Stethem, the mother of the ship's namesake: Steelworker Second Class (SW2) Robert Stethem, the United States Navy Seabee diver murdered in Beirut during the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 in 1985. The vessel then transited the Panama Canal and was officially commissioned on 21 October 1995 at the Naval Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme. On 15 February 1996 she successfully completed her Post Delivery Test and Trials and was thus cleared for combat operations. She was assigned to her home port, San Diego, California.

This ‘Freedom of Navigation’ exercise is the second such operation conducted by the US during Donald Trump’s presidency.
On May 24, the US Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Dewey, came within 12 miles of the Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, another disputed island that lies in the southern part of the South China Sea.

Aegis BMD is designed to intercept ballistic missiles post-boost phase and prior to reentry.
It enables USS Stethem to shoot down enemy ballistic missiles by expanding the Aegis Combat System with the addition of the AN/SPY-1 radar and Standard missile technologies.
Aegis BMD-equipped vessels can transmit their target detection information to other systems and, if needed, engage potential threats using either the SM-2 or SM-3 missile.

The heart of the AEGIS systems on board the USS Stethem is an advanced, automatic detect and track, multifunctional phased-array radar, the AN/SPY-1. This high-powered (4 MW) radar is able to perform search, track and missile guidance functions simultaneously with a capability of over 100 targets.
By contrast, the computer-controlled AN/SPY-1A Phased Array Radar of the AEGIS system brings these functions together within one system.

It has 90 cell Mk 41 VLS, which can be configured with the combination of the following weapons, based on mission.
1. BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missile for Land attack
2. RUM-139 VL-ASROC is an anti-submarine missile
3. SM2 or SM 3 Standard Ballistic missile AEGIS ballistic missile defense
It also has 2 × Mk 141 Harpoon Missile Launcher for Anti Ship role.
2 × Mark 32 triple torpedo tubes are present launching Mk-46 or Mk-50 torpedoes
2 MH-60R Seahawk LAMPS III helicopters are also present for Anti Submarine Warfare.

China, Taiwan and Vietnam all lay claim to Triton, a tiny islands in the waters between Vietnam and the Philippines.
USS Stethem sailed within 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers) of Triton Island on Sunday.
The news of the US ship deployment to the contested area comes just days after reports suggest China has completed construction of new missile shelters on Mischief and Fiery Cross reefs.
Over the past three months, China has built four new missile shelters on Fiery Cross, boosting the number of installations on the reef to 12, according to satellite images.
China has also expanded radar facilities on Mischief reefs & Fiery Cross.
This ‘Freedom of Navigation’ exercise is the second such operation conducted by the US during Donald Trump’s presidency.
On May 24, the US Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Dewey, came within 12 miles of the Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, another disputed island that lies in the southern part of the South China Sea.

Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Stethem has conducted a Freedom-of-Navigation (FON) operation on 26th Feb.
She sailed between the South China Sea and the East China Sea through the Taiwan Strait alone with USNS Cesar Chavez which is a Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship.
U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Timothy Gorman said in a statement,
"USS Stethem (DDG 63) and USNS Cesar Chavez (T-AKE-14) conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit on Feb. 25 (local time), in accordance with international law,"
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a news briefing,
"We resolutely oppose the United States taking provocative actions which are not conducive to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,"
China claims almost all of the South China Sea and is trying to establish de facto control of the waters.
It wants all ships & aircraft navigating in the area to identify itself to the Chinese Military.
Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan also have claims on these waters but China has outmuscled them and set up military infrastructure in the many islands including the Spratly Islands.
The South China Sea route is significant as about $5 trillion in trade and almost 50% world’s oil shipment passes through it each year.
The waters are also thought to have 11 billion barrels of untapped oil and 190 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
Countries like the US, Japan and India have no claims in the area and want ‘Freedom of Navigation’ as per international maritime laws.
Viewers may note that the US conducts Freedom-of-Navigation exercise regularly and it the 4th such transit in 5 Months.
This FON operation occurred even as U.S. and China are engaging in resolving the trade dispute.

Ship history
USS Stethem is the 13th Arleigh Burke-class Aegis destroyer. Construction of Stethem began on 18 May 1992 with the ship's keel being laid down at the Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi on 11 May 1993. She was launched on 17 June 1994 and was christened Stethem on 16 July 1994 by Mrs. Patricia L. Stethem, the mother of the ship's namesake: Steelworker Second Class (SW2) Robert Stethem, the United States Navy Seabee diver murdered in Beirut during the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 in 1985. The vessel then transited the Panama Canal and was officially commissioned on 21 October 1995 at the Naval Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme. On 15 February 1996 she successfully completed her Post Delivery Test and Trials and was thus cleared for combat operations. She was assigned to her home port, San Diego, California.
