Within Rocky Mountain National Park US 34 is known as Trail Ridge Road. Due to its high elevation through the park and over the Continental Divide, Route 34 closes entirely in winter from the Colorado River Trailhead on the west (10 miles north of the Grand Lake entrance) to Many Parks Curve on the east (8 miles from the Estes Park entrance.) Closure runs roughly from mid-October to Memorial Day weekend in May, and can occur at any time in summer due to high alpine snow storms.
In the U.S. state of Nebraska, U.S. Highway 34 is a highway which goes between the Colorado border west of Haigler to the Iowa border east of Plattsmouth. Between Culbertson and Hastings, U.S. 34 overlapsU.S. Highway 6. From Grand Island to Lincoln, U.S. 34 has been replaced by Interstate 80 as a high-speed corridor and mostly serves local traffic. On this portion of the highway, U.S. 34 is continuously north of Interstate 80. Within Lincoln, U.S. 34 runs concurrent with all of Interstate 180, and much of it follows O Street.
Route description
U.S. Highway 34 begins west of Haigler. At Haigler, it meets Nebraska Highway 27, which connects with K-27 in Kansas. It continues east to Benkelman, where it intersects and overlaps with Nebraska Highway 61 and briefly turns north. After leaving Benkelman, the overlap ends, and U.S. 34 continues northeast through Max and Stratton before meeting Nebraska Highway 25 in Trenton. Before reaching Culbertson, it intersects U.S. Highway 6.
Between Monmouth and Galesburg, the highway is up to interstate standards with exits at Main Street, Henderson Street, and Seminary Street in Galesburg.
History
In 1934, US 34 absorbed what had been the last remaining section of US 32.
US 34 formerly overlapped US 66 all the way to its endpoint in downtown Chicago, but was truncated to its intersection with US 66 and IL 43 in Berwyn in 1970. When US 66 was subsequently eliminated, the endpoint of US 34 was left at that location—the intersection of Ogden and Harlem Avenues in Berwyn. Due to the elimination of US 66, it is one of the few US Numbered Highways that ends at a state highway. With the re-signing of much of Historic US 66, the history of US 34's eastern endpoint is becoming much more clear.

Welcome to the fourth and final part of our Ogden Ave/U.S. Route 34 WB series from Chicago to Somonauk, IL! We begin at where the last video ended at U.S. Route 30 in Oswego, IL approximately 35 miles from Downtown Chicago. We continue all the way into Oswego's historic Downtown area where we cross the Fox River making a few turns in the process. Up to Downtown Oswego from the start of this video, 30 years ago there was nothing out there! Most of what we drive by in this first part was built within the last 20 to 30 years. After crossing the Fox River, we enter the more rural and wooded west side of Oswego passing older homes on larger lots approaching Orchard Rd. After Orchard Rd, we pass a few more Oswego streets before e...

Welcome to part 1 of the Eastbound Ogden Ave/U.S. Route 34 series! This is the first part of a series from the west side of Somonauk, IL that will eventually lead us straight into the West Loop in Downtown Chicago.
This part will go from Somonauk and end at U.S. Route 30 in Oswego. Here we first enter the Chicagoland area beginning the transition from the cornfields of Somonauk and Sandwich to suburban area as we pass through Yorkville and Oswego. You might notice once we reach Plano's east side we start seeing newer neighborhoods pop up next to older ones. A lot of these cities (particularly Plano, Yorkville, and Oswego) have seen significant development in the last 15+ years since there is cheap land and it is close enough to the big city that it is a...

This shows U.S. 34 westbound from just outside Loveland towards Estes Park in early June of 2014. They are obviously reconstructing parts of the road as a result of flood damage incurred in September of 2013. I believe I also posted footage of this road before the flood and given the flood I'm really glad I did. So this video shows the road after the flood but before all the repairs have been made.

Welcome to the fourth and final part of our Ogden Ave/U.S. Route 34 WB series from Chicago to Somonauk, IL! After Orchard Rd, we pass a few more Oswego streets before entering Kendall County's county seat of Yorkville where we pass next to a mix of older homes and newer homes. You can probably notice at this point that the pavement looks practically brand-new. That is because it is! (Completed in 2019). U.S. Route 34 was widened in this segment up through Bridge St (IL Route 47) and was long overdue. Yorkville and Oswego ballooned tremendously in the last 20 years so it was needed! After crossing Bridge St you can see the road dips down the first of several more times throughout the video to cross the Blackberry Creek. We then rise back up as we pass through the rest of Yorkville and cross into Plano (Fun fact: Plano was the filming location for all the Smallville scenes in Man of Steel (2013) and the Kent Family Farm is only a few miles south of Yorkville's south side!). This part of US 34 also looks new all the way into Plano's downtown since Plano too doubled in size in the last 30 years (completed in 2014). The road dips down again to cross the Big Rock Creek (another tributary to the Fox River) before rising back up into Plano's downtown. We pass by many older buildings including Plano Molding Co's original complex and many of Plano's original homes before exiting out into countryside. A train blasts by on Little Rock Rd as we head into Sandwich, IL crossing Little Rock Creek with the road dipping down then back up again. At this point we are transitioning out of the Chicago Metro and heading into consistently rural neighborhoods. We pass through Sandwich's downtown just like we did Plano passing by historic homes and buildings before reaching Sandwich's west side. Sandwich's west side is home to the famous Sandwich Fair in which the Wed thru Sunday after Labor Day every year the area is packed with people for all of its festivities. After passing the Sandwich Fairgrounds the road dips down one last time over Somonauk Creek where we enter Somonauk, IL, the last city in this video. This is where we officially enter rural Northern Illinois and after Somonauk there is only a handful of cities to see for over 100 miles. We then pass straight through Somonauk and all of its older homes and buildings before reaching the town's far west side where this video ends.
I hope you guys enjoyed a VirtualRide on the Chicago Metro's Ogden Ave/U.S. Route 34 from the Big City Center in Chicago all the way to rural Northern Illinois in Somonauk, IL! It is quite a remarkable ride to see all those neighborhoods and how this road connects ALL of them!

You might also notice a lot of newer pavement particularly from the east side of Plano all the way through Yorkville. IDOT reconstructed and widened that stretch in 2 segments between 2013-2014 (Plano to Eldamain Rd) and 2018-2019 (Eldamain Rd through Yorkville) due to increasing traffic in the area as this is the main arterial road that connects all five cities. 30 years ago there was next to nothing along 34 in the segment on this video.

Nebraska may be the Cornhusker State, but there is SO much more than corn! 🌽 We had a blast experiencing the natural beauty, fun cities, unique stops and activities, and delicious food that this state has to offer.

Be sure to subscribe, hit the bell, and check out the full playlist of all the segments of Ogden start to finish!

A lot of these cities (particularly Plano, Yorkville, and Oswego) have seen significant development in the last 15+ years since there is cheap land and it is close enough to the big city that it is a respectable drive yet far enough that you can still enjoy the countryside feel.
Enjoy the ride! Stay tuned for part 2 next week! Remember to subscribe and hit the Like button!

US 34 in Rocky Mountain National Park. Includes footage of Trail Ridge Road, one of the highest roads in Colorado and the Country. It climbs to a maximum elevation of 12,183 ft.

Visiting Nebraska for the first time. We see the Carhenge art installation near Alliance, Scott's Bluff and the Chimney Rock, Spike Tower overlooking the largest rail yard in the world, and then Lincoln and Omaha. We also make a quick trip into Kansas to see the Geographical Center of the Contiguous United States.

👋🏼 About us
Hi y’all! We’re Adam, Kathryn, and Kona, an adventurous married couple (+ pup!) living on the road in our self-converted sprinter van! You can often find us driving all around the US and Canada, scoping out the best coffee shops, eating tacos and ice cream (we're a 5+ taco and 2+ scoop household), and enjoying nature.
We help travelers spend less time (and stress!) planning their trip and more time enjoying it! Our detailed travel guides, YouTube videos, and travel resources share the must-visit local eats, popular and off the beaten path sights, and tons of tips to make planning your next adventure a whole lot easier.
Note: We’ve linked a handful of items so you can see exactly which products we take with us. Full disclosure--if you click on these links and make a purchase, we get a small commission at no extra cost to you. We will only ever recommend products we truly love, actually use during our adventures, and think you can benefit from too!
This shows Missouri State Hwys. 34/74 from their junction with U.S. 61 across the Mississippi River to their junction with IL St. Hwy. 146 on the Wednedsday before Memorial Day in 2017. Very nice drive.
Lincoln Highway, Nebraska!
On our way to Chicago to start another Route 66 Tour!
Had a bit of extra time to take a small detour and drive an old alignment of the original Lincoln Highway. Doing some research for a potential transcontinental NY to San Francisco tour.
