Construction began in 1989, but work on the main tower did not begin until April1990. The main tower is 370 feet (113m) in height from the top of the tower to the riverbed. During the Great Flood of 1993, construction continued despite record crests on the Mississippi below. The final cost of the bridge was $49 million, about 16 percent over budget.
The Great River Bridge replaced the MacArthur Bridge, an aging two-lane, cantilevered, steel toll bridge built in 1917. At the time, the bridge was in desperate need of repair, or replacement, as it swayed ominously when two semis crossed the bridge at the same time on the two lanes of traffic. After the bridge was dismantled, the engineers discovered that the supports weren't sunk into the bedrock far enough, causing undermining of the piers. The new bridge is five lanes wide (two westbound, three eastbound), with piers sunk over 90 feet into bedrock, and provides a safer crossing across the Mississippi River than the old bridge.
Begun after a flood in 1938 and completed the next year, the original bridge was the main north-south crossing of the river for seventy years.
With time, however, the span became a bottleneck that figuratively split the city. Starting no later than the 1970s, people started talking about taking some sort of action, and the result was the construction of a similar bridge 150 feet (46m) downstream of the original, begun in 2007. The new bridge opened for traffic and the old one was closed for renovation on August 18, 2009. The area surrounding was improved with new sidewalks, lights, and pavement. The upstream (1938) bridge carries three lanes of southbound traffic, and the downstream (2007) bridge carries three lanes northbound. A small park lies between the approaches on both sides of the river.
Preliminary studies indicate the bridge would be 4.25 miles (6.85km) long, with one 1500-foot (460 m) cable-stayed span over the main channel of the river supported by two 450-foot (137 m) towers. A cost of $565 million has been estimated.
The structure's name is derived from Charles W. Dean (1927–1998), an engineer from Cleveland, Mississippi who proposed the bridge in 1984. A Mississippi legislative act named the proposed bridge after Dean in 1999.
History and development
The Great River Bridge was originally proposed by Mississippi engineer Charles W. Dean in 1984. Originally part of the planned relocation of US-278 through the lower Mississippi Delta, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approved the environmental impact statement (EIS) and issued a Record of Decision (ROD) for the bridge in 2004.
The Great River rises at about 1,400 feet (430m) just north of the small village of Pisgah in the north west corner of St Elizabeth. From here it flows north north east for about 57 miles (92km) (some sources say 46 miles (74km)) reaching the Caribbean Sea at Great River Bay on the island's north coast, 4.5 miles (7.2km) west of Montego Bay.
Ecology
The Great River is home to the second largest tree in the island, and to crawfish.
Tourism
The Great River is one of the three most popular for traditional rafting on bamboo rafts. It is also used for tube and zip line craft.
The Great Godavari Bridge and The Legendary Coromandel Express.

History's Biggest Blunder | Battle of Big Black River Bridge Animated Battle Map
What was history's greatest military blunder? Who made the biggest mistake in history? Let's look at the Battle of Big Black River Bridge and see if it qualifies. Lieutenant General John Pemberton, hoping to delay Ulysses S. Grant from advancing on Vicksburg before Confederate reinforcements could converge on the city, made a huge tactical mistake by trapping his men in a horseshoe of the Big Black River. Brigadier General Michael Lawler stood out as one of the MVPs of the battle as he capitalized on a geographic feature that allowed his brigade to flank the Confederate defenses.

The creation of the Beipanjiang bridge completely changed travel in China’s Guizhou province, which is known for all the tall bridges that have to be made to navigate the rocky and often treacherous terrain. The bridge was even more effective than China’s high-speed rail in the area-- it cut time crossing the valley from 3 hours to just 5 minutes. China actually has a reputation for tall bridges-- it has the most tall bridges in the world with more than 250 bridges over 100 meters high. One of these is the Sidu River Bridge, which held the record for highest bridge before the Duge bridge was built. So, was the Beipanjiang bridge a worthwhile undertaking? Is there more than just its height that makes it so impressive? And just how far ahead of the rest of the world is China when it comes to super-tall bridges? You’ll have to click play and find out!

The Great River Road Trip was one of the United States’ first scenic byways. Starting in 1931, it wound along the Mississippi River from New Orleans to St. Paul and on up to Lake Superior.
The idea for this trip came from a man named Horace King who wanted to create an American equivalent of the famous European driving tour known as The Grand Tour. He thought that following America’s longest river would be perfect for such a trip but had no way of knowing what people might expect or enjoy seeing along the way. He turned to his friend John Nolen and asked him if he would come up with some suggestions for places that could be added to make it into a true scenic byway, like those found in Europe. Today it is a famous place for scenic road trips.

Beipanjiang bridge in southern China is the highest bridge in the world, allowing you to drive almost 2,000 feet over the turbulent Beipan River below. Construction on the innovative project took three years and cost a whopping $147 million. Million-dollar research grants on how to create the highest bridge in the world helped launch construction, which would end up making this bridge, also known as the Duge bridge, higher than even the Millau Viaduct in France-- which thanks to its towers is technically taller, but not higher off of the ground than China’s engineering marvel.

A daredevil performed a heart stopping leap off the top of a 105-foot-high bridge.
Brave Dylan Balog clambered on top of the iron girders - the same height as the Tower of London - in Masontown, West Virginia, USA on August 16.
The experienced bridge jumper psyches himself up before throwing one of the stones into the river below.
Having launched his other three rocks to break the surface tension and give himself a landing spot to aim for, Dylan steps out and begins to plummet.
Skip to 3:35 to see and hear the bridge.
The Brookport bridge is one of the most fascinating bridges in the country. It crosses the Ohio River via US Highway 45 between Paducah, Kentucky and Brookport, Illinois.
It's over 90 years old and carries over 5,000 vehicles over the river every day - its become a local legend due to the nerve-racking driving experience it offers.
(The bridge is entirely safe to travel and undergoes regular inspections by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. If you plan to visit, PLEASE follow all vehicular size and weight restrictions.)

Some of the best attractions to see in Minnesota and Wisconsin on the Great River Road Trip are The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, The Glensheen Historic Estate, and Jay Cooke State Park in Minnesota. The Lower Wisconsin Riverway, The Taliesin Estate, and The National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Wisconsin.
