World Heritage Sites: How are they selected? | Inside Story

The United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization was formed in 1945 as a specialist branch of the United Nations that would focus on encouraging cooperation between countries in education, the arts, science, and culture. More commonly known as UNESCO, it began the World Heritage Site Program in 1972 whereby it would designate places around the globe as ones that should be protected because of cultural or natural importance. Today, 1,154 have been added to the list, which has proven to be one of the most successful initiatives to have come from the U.N. It’s time, then, to explore some of them… so join us, as we take a tour around the world to visit the 15 most amazing UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

In a huge setback for Liverpool, UNESCO has stripped the English city of its World Heritage status.
The decision came after concerns about development in the city.
Being put on UNESCO's World Heritage list often leads to huge financial rewards through investments and tourism.
But losing it could also have the opposite effect.
The Heritage list includes globally recognizable sites including Egypt's pyramids and the Great wall of China.
UNESCO is meeting in China this year to consider 17 other sites to add to its list.
But what criteria are they considering for this prestigious honour?

Guests:
Trevor Skempton - Member of the Merseyside Civic Society.
Amr Al-Azm - Professor of History and Anthropology at Shawnee State University.

where you can reflect on your inner life
and discuss your concerns and conflicts with a monk over a cup of tea.
If you're seeking a special day out of the ordinary, explore Bulguksa Temple.
With a history spanning a thousand years and an enchanting ambiance,
you are guaranteed to have a exceptional experience at this temple.

Visiting Fort Bowie National Historic Site in Arizona
Fort Bowie National Historic Site is pretty unique in America's National Park System. Located in Southeastern Arizona, Fort Bowie can only be visited on foot (with exceptions for people unable to physically hike to the site), with a mile and a half hike to get to the ruins of the fort and the park's visitor center. But the hike really adds to the experience as you get to see where so much history happened on your journey. On the hike to Fort Bowie, you see where the Bascom Affair happened (which started over two decades of war between the U.S. and the Apaches), the old post cemetery, the location of the Battle of Apache Pass, ruins of a Butterfield Overland Stage Station, Apache Springs, and of course the Fort Bowie ruins. Not to mention you can stand in the same spots that legends of the ...

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.
