EPISODE 6: '1892: GLADSTONE'S LAST HURRAH;
Dr. Luke Blaxill (Hertford College, Oxford) and Mr. Taym Saleh (Queen's College, Cambridge) discus the 1892 General Election, where Gladstone - at the age of 82 - led the Liberals, routed six years ago, in an election for the last time. He was up against the mighty combined force of the Unionist Alliance, featuring the Conservatives led by Lord Salisbury alongside the Liberal Unionists led by Lord Hartington and Joseph Chamberlain. The result of the 1892 election was close, and came as a great surprise to many contemporaries , and to this day historians have struggled to explain it.

8. Bradlaugh’s parliamentary campaigns & final years (Origins of secularism & the NSS)
NSS council member and historian Bob Forder produced a series of lectures to support, educate and entertain all those interested in secularism and the history of the NSS. By telling the stories of Thomas Paine, Annie Besant, Charles Bradlaugh and the other important figures who contributed to the development of secular thought in the UK, Bob gives a fascinating and personal view of the origins of secularism and the National Secular Society.
In this video, Bob tells the story of Charles Bradlaugh's fight to take his seat in parliament. Despite being elected MP for Northampton multiple times, he was barred from taking his seat in parliament due to being an atheist. His eventual triumph in getting his seat paved the way for greater equality for parliamentarians of all faiths and none.

PM Modi Kanniyakumari Visit LIVE | PM Modi Meditation Retreat LIVE | Lok Sabha Elections 2024 | N18L
Swami Vivekananda, the philosopher, author and a spiritual leader, swam from the shores of Kanniyakumari (Kanyakumari) to an islet in 1892 and meditated there for three days, and attained enlightenment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also chosen the same rock, now called the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, to meditate from May 30 to June 1 to mark the end of BJP’s Lok Sabha election campaign.
During the end of the 2019 election campaign, PM Modi visited Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand for two days where he undertook a 15-hour ‘ekantavaas’ (solitary meditation).

UK General Election Results, 1832 - 2010
UK general election results for the Parliament, from the 1832 Great Reform Act, which extended the franchise and reformed constituencies, to the 2010 election, which saw no party achieve a majority for the first time since 1974.
One note, the number of seats added or lost to the totals for each year is the number achieved relative to the previous election, not relative to the number of seats going into the election.
In-government seat bars are first, followed by the opposition, and subsequent parties.

The result of the 1892 election was close, and came as a great surprise to many contemporaries , and to this day historians have struggled to explain it.
As well as discussing Gladstone and the state of the parties, Dr. Blaxill and Mr. Saleh discuss two important themes. The first is Liberal Unionism - the new political party, formed as a result of the Liberal schism over Irish Home Rule - which was an important political player from 1886 until 1912. We ask who the Liberal Unionists were, what animated them, and whether they really did constitute a third distinct political party? Second, we discuss the Newcastle Programme- the Liberal policy platform agreed as a compromise between Gladstone and the grassroots Liberal organisation - and also the rise of 'manifesto politics' in general.
Dr. Blaxill and Mr. Saleh are amongst the most eminent historians of British Electoral Politics in the world, having authored more than twenty books and articles on the subject, and having been featured on TV and Radio.

SUMMARY
=======
The presidency of Benjamin Harrison began on March 4, 1889, when Benjamin Harrison was inaugurated as President of the United States, and ended on March 4, 1893. Harrison, a Republican, took office as the 23rd United States president after defeating Democratic incumbent President Grover Cleveland in the 1888 election. Four years later he was defeated for re-election by Cleveland in the 1892 presidential election. Harrison is the only president to be preceded and succeeded by the same individual. Harrison is also the only president to be the grandson of another president.
Harrison and the Republican-controlled 51st Congress enacted the most ambitious domestic agenda of the late-nineteenth century. Hallmarks of his administration include the McKinley Tariff, which imposed historic protective trade rates, and the Sherman Antitrust Act, which empowered the federal government to investigate and prosecute trusts. Due in large part to surplus revenues from the tariffs, federal spending reached one billion dollars for the first time during his term. Harrison facilitated the creation of the National Forests through an amendment to the Land Revision Act of 1891, and substantially strengthened and modernized the Navy. He proposed, in vain, federal education funding as well as voting rights enforcement for African Americans during his administration. In foreign policy, Harrison sought tariff reciprocity in Latin America and increased U.S. influence across the Pacific. Harrison's presidency saw the addition of six new states, more than any other president.
Although many have praised Harrison's commitment to African Americans' voting rights, scholars and historians generally regard his administration as below-average, and rank him in the bottom half among U.S. presidents. Historians, however, have not questioned Harrison's commitment to personal and official integrity. With his ambitious domestic policy and assertive foreign policy, Harrison set a precedent for the more powerful presidencies of the 20th century.
