What’s up guys, its Ollie from History Profiles and today’s video will be on the Legendary Viking Warrior and King Ivar the Boneless. Today I will be taking you 9th Century Britain and Scandinavia otherwise known as the Viking age. It was a time for men of ambition, men of the sword and killers. In a time where the flames of war were ever apparent, only the strong and most cunning of warriors would be remembered for their deeds. Ivar was all of these things being the veteran of a hundred battles and the mastermind behind all his army’s victories, this is his story.

Watch my latest full length history documentary here:-
https://youtu.be/c3Hq6UaFQqk
It was during the year 917 that two autonomous war fleets of Norsemen and Danes sailed out from their strongholds across the Irish Sea in England and Scotland and set forth for Ireland. It had been 15 years since they had been expelled from their strongholds in and around Dublin by a coalition of native Irishmen intent on reclaiming their lands, and now after building up their forces once more, they sought to reconquer the rich trading port first established by their ancestors over one hundred years before. The fleets were led by two men; Ragnall ua Ímair on the one side and Sitric Cáech on the other, both ambitious young pagan warriors seeking fame and glory, both members of the famous Uí Ímair dynasty wh...

Suðreyjar - Descendance
Suðreyjar is a one-man project based in Argyll, Scotland.
The Kingdom of the Isles was a Norse-Gaelic kingdom comprising the Isle of Man, the Hebrides and the islands of the Clyde from the 9th to the 13th centuries AD. The islands were known to the Norsemen as the Suðreyjar, or "Southern Isles" as distinct from the Norðreyjar, or Northern Isles of Orkney and Shetland. In Scottish Gaelic, the kingdom is known as Rìoghachd nan Eilean. The territory is sometimes called the Kingdom of Mann and the Isles, although only some of the later rulers claimed that title. The historical record is incomplete, and the kingdom was not a continuous entity throughout the entire period. At times the rulers were independent of external control, although for much of the period they had overlords in Norway, Ire...

The fleets were led by two men; Ragnall ua Ímair on the one side and Sitric Cáech on the other, both ambitious young pagan warriors seeking fame and glory, both members of the famous Uí Ímair dynasty which had ruled in Ireland for generations, and thus both possible descendants of Ivar the Boneless, the son of Lodbrok who had devastated the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxons in England two generations before at the head of the Great Heathen Army. The many battles that took place during that fateful year of 917 would shatter the short period of peace which had followed the Viking exodus of 902, and go on to establish again a supremacy of Norse and Dane over native Irish.

At times the rulers were independent of external control, although for much of the period they had overlords in Norway, Ireland, England, Scotland or Orkney. At times there also appear to have been competing claims for all or parts of the territory. The islands have a total land area of over 8,300 square kilometres (3,205 sq mi) and extend for more than 500 kilometres (310 mi) from north to south.
Viking influence in the area began in the late 8th century, and whilst there is no doubt that the Uí Ímair dynasty played a prominent role in this early period, the records for the dates and details of the rulers are speculative until the mid-10th century. Hostility between the Kings of the Isles and the rulers of Ireland, and intervention by the crown of Norway (either directly or through their vassal the Earl of Orkney) were recurring themes.
The Laxdaela Saga contains mention of several persons who are said to have come to Iceland from Sodor, which appears to be these Suðreyjar, before or around the middle of the 10th century.
An invasion by Magnus Barefoot in the late 11th century resulted in a brief period of direct Norwegian rule over the kingdom, but soon the descendants of Godred Crovan re-asserted a further period of largely independent overlordship. This came to an end with the emergence of Somerled, on whose death in 1164 the kingdom was split in two. Just over a century later, the islands became part of the Kingdom of Scotland, following the 1266 Treaty of Perth.
Norse/Native American Connection:
There is evidence of Norse trade with the natives (called the Skræling by the Norse). The Norse would have encountered both Native Americans (the Beothuk, related to the Algonquin) and the Thule, the ancestors of the Inuit. The Dorset had withdrawn from Greenland before the Norse settlement of the island. Items such as comb fragments, pieces of iron cooking utensils and chisels, chess pieces, ship rivets, carpenter's planes, and oaken ship fragments used in Inuit boats have been found far beyond the traditional range of Norse colonization. A small ivory statue that appears to represent a European has also been found among the ruins of an Inuit community house.

The very act of acknowledging our ancestors
helps us to find our place in the world,
a sense of belonging within the tribe.
Our past and our future!
