The United Kingdom has a highly centralized education system, which is divided into four main stages: primary, secondary, further and higher education.
Primary education starts at the age of five and lasts for seven years. All children must attend primary school, which is free of charge. The majority of primary schools are controlled by the local authority, although there are also a number of academies and free schools.
