In his four-year career at Fresno State University, Johnson appeared in 127 games (87 starts) and averaged 10.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals in 27.9 minutes per game while shooting 45.6 percent from the field, 37.4 percent from three-point range and 71.6 percent from the free-throw line. He finished his career ranked number 16 on Fresno State's all-time scoring list with 1,346 career points. As a senior, he was named to the All-Mountain West second team and shot 43.2 percent from three-point range, the sixth-highest single-season three-point field goal percentage in school history.
Johnson was selected by the Spokane Chiefs with their 11th-round pick in the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft. In his first season with this team, in 2007–08, he appeared in 69 regular season games, scoring 13 goals and 29 assists. The Chiefs won the Ed Chynoweth Cup that season as the league's champions. The Chiefs subsequently earned a berth in the 2008 Memorial Cup, where they defeated the Kitchener Rangers by a score of 4–1. Johnson played in all 21 playoff games, scoring five goals and adding three assists. He was named the WHL playoffs' Most Valuable Player as a 17-year-old rookie.
In the 2008–09 season, he played in 62 games, scoring 26 goals and 35 assists for 61 points and adding another five goals and three assists in 12 playoff games. The 2009–10 season saw Johnson's numbers improve, as he tallied 36 goals and 35 assists in 64 games. He also added three goals and five assists in seven playoff games.
Johnson spent most of the 2006 season with the Cardinals' minor league team, the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, but appeared in 56 games and pitched 361⁄3 innings with the St. Louis Cardinals. In the 2006 postseason, he pitched 71⁄3 innings and compiled a 1.23 ERA, including one scoreless inning pitched in the 2006 World Series, which the Cardinals won, defeating the Detroit Tigers, four games to one. He pitched again for the Cardinals in 2007 before becoming injured and missing the 2008 season. He was non-tendered following the 2008 season.
On February 5, 2009, Johnson signed a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training with the Seattle Mariners. After 2 months in the minors rehabbing, Johnson was released on June 6.
