The Twin Cities and Western Railroad(reporting markTCWR) is a railroad operating in the U.S. state of Minnesota which started operations on July 27, 1991. Trackage includes the former Soo Line Railroad "Ortonville Line", originally built as the first part of the Pacific extension of the Milwaukee Road. This main line extends from Hopkins, Minnesota (a Western suburb of the Twin Cities) to Appleton, Minnesota. The line was originally built between Hopkins and Cologne Minnesota in 1876 by Hastings and Dakota Railroad. In 1913, the Milwaukee Road rerouted it, reducing the curves. The line was eventually extended to the Pacific.
As of 2010, the TCWR also has trackage rights over the BNSF Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway. On 2012, the TCWR has purchased the Sisseton Milbank Railroad and it now operates as a subsidiary of the Twin Cities and Western Railway.
A group of Fayetteville citizens obtained a charter from the North Carolina legislature in December 1852 to construct a railroad from Fayetteville to the coal fields of Chatham County (now Chatham, Moore, and Lee counties). The state helped finance, build, and operate the new railroad. Problems with the construction contracts and obtaining rights of way delayed its construction, the first rails being laid in 1858. It was not completed until the first part of the American Civil War. Its first operations in commenced in 1861 to McIver's Depot, and the line was completed to Egypt in 1863.
Charles Beatty Mallett (1816-1872) served as the railroad's second president from 1855 to 1865, and fourth president from 1867 to 1868. He was the son of Charles Peter Mallett (1792-c1874). Mallett was a cotton manufacturer, acquiring a controlling interest in the Union Manufacturing Company during the time he served as the railroad's president. In 1862 Mallett, in partnership with James Browne of Charleston, South Carolina, took over management and operation of the Egypt Coal Mines. These mines had been owned by a Philadelphia-based company, and had been placed into receivership by the Confederate government at the start of the war. The facilities of the railroad were used to transport the coal to Fayetteville, where it was then moved down the Cape Fear River to its contracted final destination of Wilmington, North Carolina. In 1865 Gen. Sherman's army reached Fayetteville. During his campaign Sherman burned or destroyed several of the bridges used by the railroad, 12 miles of track, and several depots. Its rolling stock was saved, having been moved to the Egypt end of the line. By 1868, his other businesses and personal residence also destroyed by Sherman's campaign, Mallett was forced into bankruptcy.
Twin cities are a special case of two cities or urban centres that are founded in close geographic proximity and then grow into each other over time, losing most of their mutual buffer zone. In the United States, "the Twin Cities" usually refers to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area in Minnesota.
There are no precise criteria for twin-cityhood, but to be considered twin cities, the cities involved have to have a similar administrative status and somewhat comparable sizes; a suburb of a much larger population center is usually not considered to form a twin city with it. For example, South San Francisco (population about 65,000) is not considered a twin city with San Francisco (population about 850,000). However, cities considered twinned by proximity do not necessarily match demographically, economically, or politically.
In many historical cases, cities that grew into each other's space lost their individual identities, and the border or barrier originally separating them became almost irrelevant. An 1873 case of twin cities merging to become a united city is Budapest in Hungary, which began as two settlements (Buda and Pest) facing each other across the Danube at a strategic fording place along a trade route. In China, the three ancient cities of Hankou, Hanyang, and Wuchang, separated by the junction of the Yangtze and Hanjiang rivers, were joined in 1927 into the single entity of Wuhan.
There are several different definitions of the region. Many refer to the Twin Cities as the seven-county region which is governed under the Metropolitan Council regional governmental agency and planning organization. The United States Office of Management and Budget officially designates 16 counties as the Minneapolis-St. Paul–Bloomington MN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area, the 16th largest in the United States. The entire region known as the Minneapolis-St. Paul MN-WI Combined Statistical Area, has a population of 3,797,883, the 14th largest, according to 2013 Census estimates.
1934 had seen the introduction of lightweight streamlined trains in the United States. The railroads hoped these futuristic trains would stem the tide of customers turning away from train travel. The Chicago and North Western Railway had not invested in this new technology, but decided to upgrade track and motive power for higher speeds with heavyweight, steam-powered trains.
C&NW made their first upgrades in 1934 along the 85-mile (137km) line between Chicago and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, introducing the 90-minute Pacemaker service to compete with the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road) which introduced a similar train. Attention then turned to faster trains to Saint Paul: The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad ran a Zephyr demonstration train between Chicago and the Twin Cities that summer with the intent to run regular service the next year, and the Milwaukee Road introduced similar plans.

A Ride on the Mesa Grande Western Railroad - Amazing 1/4 Scale Live Steam Train on 40 Acres!
The 9" gauge Mesa Grande Western Railroad was started by cabinet maker Harry S. Pulaski in 1956, and moved to the present location in the high desert of Southern California in the mid-1960s. Since then it has been kept alive by successive generations of live steamers including yours truly. Here is a full ride on the Mesa Grande Western behind our flagship locomotive #268, a 3" scale (1/4 full size) copy of Denver & Rio Grande locomotive #268. There is about 7,000 feet of mainline track, and at the time this video was made the steepest grade peaked at 6.5% in one spot. There are two trestles, two smaller bridges, a Tehachapi-style loop and tunnel as well as a full yard, two stations and sidings.

Eric Vannice is an experienced and artistic lifetime model railroader, and this video is a brief tour of his most recent model railroad layout. The layout depicts the dramatic scenery of eastern Washington State in 1895, when trains were vital to each small town's existence. Eric has scratchbuilt a number of the buildings and bridges on the layout, painted the backdrops and constructed the scenery using plaster and rubber molds. The video also highlights the first ever operating session on the layout, where passenger trains meet freight trains and ore cars are set out at his super-detailed mine scene. Hello, and welcome to Part 1 of my 4 part series looking at the Four Great Railways of Britain that existed between 1923 and 1948, the LMS, the LNER, the Great Western and the Southern, companies that were formed, and dissolved, through acts of Parliament to try and rationalise the 120 individual railway firms into something more manageable, but even though these operators only lasted a mere 25 years, during that time they left an indelible mark on the face of not only British railway history, but the art-deco culture of the period that continues to resonate globally even to this day.

Built in 1880, the C&TS Railroad has revealed the staggering beauty of the American west for nearly a 140 years.

This short is about the race to build the world's first transcontinental railroad. It connected the east and west coast of the United States paving the way for white settlers at the expense of Native American populations.
The 9" gauge Mesa Grande Western Railroad was started by cabinet maker Harry S. Pulaski in 1956, and moved to the present location in the high desert of Southern California in the mid-1960s. Since then it has been kept alive by successive generations of live steamers including yours truly. Here is a full ride on the Mesa Grande Western behind our flagship locomotive #268, a 3" scale (1/4 full size) copy of Denver & Rio Grande locomotive #268. There is about 7,000 feet of mainline track, and at the time this video was made the steepest grade peaked at 6.5% in one spot. There are two trestles, two smaller bridges, a Tehachapi-style loop and tunnel as well as a full yard, two stations and sidings.
sadly, this railroad was caught in the Bobcat fire in 2020 and all of the bridges and trestles you see here were burned. As of 2022 we are in the process of rebuilding or bypassing them. Currently about 1/2 of the railroad is operable. This video was made before the fire.
The Mesa Grande Western is the only active 9" gauge railroad in the United States and one of only a handful existing world wide. The railroad is private and not open to the public.
Eric Vannice is an experienced and artistic lifetime model railroader, and this video is a brief tour of his most recent model railroad layout. The layout depicts the dramatic scenery of eastern Washington State in 1895, when trains were vital to each small town's existence. Eric has scratchbuilt a number of the buildings and bridges on the layout, painted the backdrops and constructed the scenery using plaster and rubber molds. The video also highlights the first ever operating session on the layout, where passenger trains meet freight trains and ore cars are set out at his super-detailed mine scene. The action took place at an open house at his layout, so the video has a lot of background chatter noise in addition to the locomotive sounds. Burr Stewart took the video shots with an iPhone X and narrated and edited it using iMovie and Photoshop on a MacBook pro.
This is Eric's fourth layout, and this is the first time that it has ever been "published". His work, however, has been seen on many layouts in the Seattle area on which he has contributed time and talent, Including several featured in other videos on this YouTube channel @muchfunwithtrains .
Hello, and welcome to Part 1 of my 4 part series looking at the Four Great Railways of Britain that existed between 1923 and 1948, the LMS, the LNER, the Great Western and the Southern, companies that were formed, and dissolved, through acts of Parliament to try and rationalise the 120 individual railway firms into something more manageable, but even though these operators only lasted a mere 25 years, during that time they left an indelible mark on the face of not only British railway history, but the art-deco culture of the period that continues to resonate globally even to this day.
Part 1 focuses on the Great Western Railway, the main operator of services out of London Paddington to the southwest, Wales and the West Midlands, this company being a continuation of the original and iconic Great Western as formed in the 1830s, that ran along the classic mainline from London to Bristol that had been plotted by the legendary Isambard Kingdom Brunel, but even in the era of the Big Four, the Great Western, while presenting a slew of practical and purposeful looking machines that didn't adopt the same art-deco styling as its rivals, still stood out from the rest by way of its chocolate and cream coaches and Brunswick Green engines, that defined a generation of train travel across the western United Kingdom.

Who doesn't love to watch trains run with diesel engines? A lot of us enjoy seeing those high-speed EMDs pull trains at top speed while humming and honking furiously, and this is the most fascinating part with the exquisite craftsmanship of various sheds with loco locomotives.
You will witness 16209 Ajmer Mysuru Exp many more Sunday evenings since I usually watch these machines after college or on Sundays. They feel soothing after the busy schedule and weekends.

The Twin Cities and Western Railroad(reporting markTCWR) is a railroad operating in the U.S. state of Minnesota which started operations on July 27, 1991. Trackage includes the former Soo Line Railroad "Ortonville Line", originally built as the first part of the Pacific extension of the Milwaukee Road. This main line extends from Hopkins, Minnesota (a Western suburb of the Twin Cities) to Appleton, Minnesota. The line was originally built between Hopkins and Cologne Minnesota in 1876 by Hastings and Dakota Railroad. In 1913, the Milwaukee Road rerouted it, reducing the curves. The line was eventually extended to the Pacific.
As of 2010, the TCWR also has trackage rights over the BNSF Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway. On 2012, the TCWR has purchased the Sisseton Milbank Railroad and it now operates as a subsidiary of the Twin Cities and Western Railway.
