Turks of Western Thrace
Turks of Western Thrace (Turkish: Batı Trakya Türkleri, Greek: Τούρκοι της Δυτικής Θράκης) are ethnic Turks who live in Western Thrace, in the province of East Macedonia and Thrace in Northern Greece.
According to the Greek census of 1991, there were approximately 50,000 Turks in Western Thrace, out of the approximately 98,000 strong Muslim minority of Greece. Other sources estimate the size of the Turkish community between 120,000 and 130,000. The Turks of Western Thrace are not to be confused with Pomaks nor with Muslim Roma people of the same region, counting 35% and 15% of the Muslim minority respectively.
The Greek government has adopted a policy of not referring to the Turkish community specifically, and instead refers to the entire Muslim minority which includes Pomaks and Roma Muslims, and does not recognize a separate Turkish minority in Western Thrace, instead referring to the whole Muslim minority as "Greek Muslims". The fundamental rights of the Turks of East Macedonia and Thrace are enshrined in the Greek constitution and the Treaty of Lausanne with Turkey, which states Greece's obligations to its Muslim minority.

Western Thrace
Western Thrace (Greek: [Δυτική] Θράκη, [Dytikí] Thráki, [ˈθraci]; Turkish: Batı Trakya; Bulgarian: Западна Тракия, Zapadna Trakiya or Беломорска Тракия, Belomorska Trakiya) is a geographic and historical region of Greece, located between the Nestos and Evros rivers in the northeast of the country. Together with the regions of Macedonia, Epirus and sometimes Thessaly, it is often referred to informally as northern Greece. It is also called Greek Thrace to distinguish it from Eastern Thrace, which lies east of the river Evros and forms the European part of Turkey, and the area to the north, in Bulgaria, known as Northern Thrace.
Inhabited since paleolithic times, it has been under the political, cultural and linguistic influence of the Greek world since the classical era; Greeks from the Aegean islands extensively colonized the region (especially the coastal part) and built prosperous cities such as Abdera (home of Democritus, the 5th-century philosopher who developed an atomic particle theory, and of Protagoras, a leading sophist) and Sale (near present-day Alexandroupoli). Under the Byzantine Empire, Western Thrace benefited from its position close to the imperial heartland and became a center of medieval Greek commerce and culture; later, under the Ottoman Empire, a number of Muslims settled there, marking the birth of the Muslim minority of Greece.

The Journey into Europe team visited the city of Xanthi in the Western Thrace region of Greece where Dr. Amineh Hoti talked with Nuseybe Bosnak, a member of the Turkish Minority community, about her identity. The European region of Western Thrace, near the Turkish border in northern Greece, has been inhabited by a Muslim population for centuries, even prior to the Ottoman Empire coming in the 14th century. Today, the Muslim community of Western Thrace numbers over 100,000 with some villages having populations which are 100% Muslim.

The European region of Western Thrace, near the Turkish border in northern Greece, has been inhabited by a Muslim population for centuries, even prior to the Ottoman Empire coming in the 14th century. Today, the Muslim community of Western Thrace numbers over 100,000 with some villages having populations which are 100% Muslim.

De hoofdstad was Gumuljina, thans Komotini.

Batı Trakya Bağımsız Hükûmeti (Osmanlı Türkçesi: önce غربی تراقیا حكومت موقتهسی; Garbî Trakya Hükûmet-i Muvakkatesi / Batı Trakya Geçici Hükûmeti, sonra غربی تراقیا حكومت مستقلهسی; Garbî Trakya Hükûmet-i Müstakilesi / Batı Trakya Bağımsız Hükûmeti; günümüzde Batı Trakya Türk Cumhuriyeti olarak adlandırılmaktadır), 31 Ağustos 1913 tarihinde Batı Trakya’da kurulmuştur.
Balkan Savaşları sonrasında Batı Trakya'da Türkler ve Pomaklar başta olmak üzere çoğunluğu Müslüman ahali tarafından kurulan 3 ay yaşamış bir devletti. Kuva-yi Milliye tabiri ilk defa Batı Trakya mücadelesinde kullanılır. Bu hükûmet Osmanlı Devleti tarafından tanınmamıştı. Batı Trakya bölgesi henüz kendisine ait olmayan Yunanistan siyasi sebeplerden dolayı böyle bir devlete sıcak bakıyordu, hatta kendi iradesi ile Dedeağaç'ı bu devlete teslim etmişti. Bulgaristan ve Osmanlı Devleti ise yine siyasi sebeplerden dolayı bu devletin sonunu istediler. Devlet sadece 55 gün yaşadı.

The Provisional Government of Western Thrace (Ottoman Turkish: غربی تراقیا حكومت موقتهسی - Garbi Trakya Hükûmet-i Muvakkatesi, Greek: Προσωρινή Κυβέρνηση Δυτικής Θράκης, Prosorini Kyvernisi Dytikis Thrakis), later renamed to Independent Government of Western Thrace (Ottoman Turkish: غربی تراقیا حكومت مستقلهسی - Garbi Trakya Hükûmet-i Müstakilesi, Greek: Αυτόνομη Κυβέρνηση Δυτικής Θράκης, Avtonomi Kyvernisi Dytikis Thrakis), was a small, short-lived unrecognized republic established in Western Thrace from August 31 to October 25, 1913. It encompassed the area surrounded by the rivers Maritsa (Evros) in the east, Mesta (Nestos) in the west, the Rhodope Mountains in the north and the Aegean Sea in the south. Its total territory was c. 8.600 km².

Turks of Western Thrace
Turks of Western Thrace (Turkish: Batı Trakya Türkleri, Greek: Τούρκοι της Δυτικής Θράκης) are ethnic Turks who live in Western Thrace, in the province of East Macedonia and Thrace in Northern Greece.
According to the Greek census of 1991, there were approximately 50,000 Turks in Western Thrace, out of the approximately 98,000 strong Muslim minority of Greece. Other sources estimate the size of the Turkish community between 120,000 and 130,000. The Turks of Western Thrace are not to be confused with Pomaks nor with Muslim Roma people of the same region, counting 35% and 15% of the Muslim minority respectively.
The Greek government has adopted a policy of not referring to the Turkish community specifically, and instead refers to the entire Muslim minority which includes Pomaks and Roma Muslims, and does not recognize a separate Turkish minority in Western Thrace, instead referring to the whole Muslim minority as "Greek Muslims". The fundamental rights of the Turks of East Macedonia and Thrace are enshrined in the Greek constitution and the Treaty of Lausanne with Turkey, which states Greece's obligations to its Muslim minority.
