The coup had been ordered by the military Junta in Greece and staged by the Cypriot National Guard in conjunction with EOKA-B. It deposed the Cypriot president Archbishop Makarios III and installed pro-EnosisNikos Sampson. The aim of the coup was the annexation of the island by Greece and the Hellenic Republic of Cyprus was declared.
In July 1974, Turkish forces invaded and captured 3% of the island before a ceasefire was declared. The Greek military junta collapsed and was replaced by a democratic government. In August 1974 further Turkish invasion resulted in the capture of approximately 40% of the island. The ceasefire line from August 1974 became the United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus and is commonly referred to as the Green Line.
More than one quarter of the population of Cyprus (one-third of the Greek Cypriot population) was expelled from the occupied northern part of the island where Greek Cypriots constituted 80% of the population. A little over a year later in 1975, roughly 60,000 Turkish Cypriots, amounting to half the Turkish Cypriot population, were displaced from the south to the north. The Turkish invasion ended in the partition of Cyprus along the UN-monitored Green Line, which still divides Cyprus, and the formation of a de factoautonomous Turkish Cypriot administration in the north. In 1983 the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) declared independence, although Turkey is the only country that recognizes it. The international community considers the TRNC's territory as Turkish-occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus. The occupation is viewed as illegal under international law, amounting to illegal occupation of European Union territory since Cyprus became its member.
The Theme of Cyprus (Greek:θέμα Κύπρου, thema Kyprou) was a Byzantine military-civilian province, located in the island of Cyprus, established in the 960s after the reconquest of Cyprus by the Byzantine navy. Prior to this the island had been a Byzantine-Arabcondominium for three centuries, except occasional short periods where it was occupied by either power. A rebellion by governor Theophilos Erotikos in 1042, and another in 1092 by Rhapsomates, failed as they were quickly subdued by imperial forces. At the end of the 12th century there were again separatist tendencies in Cyprus: Isaac Komnenos of Cyprus proclaimed himself as "basileus" (emperor) in 1185. Cyprus remained under his command until its conquest from Richard I of England in 1191.

Why is Cyprus Divided? (Short Animated Documentary)
Cyprus, like many countries, isn't whole. However unlike most nations which are split, it's split into three parts with Cyprus itself holding the south, Turkish-backed Northern Cyprus in the north and with Britain holding on two other parts of the island because of course they are. To find out how this strange status occurred watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

What Caused Division in Cyprus? | The Cypriot Partition Explained
What caused the once-peaceful island of Cyprus to split in two?
The answer lies in the inner workings of the complicated relationship between Cyprus' two main communities: the Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
Both have made the island their home since long before the modern day but when the age of European imperialism came to an end, they each had very different ideas for what Cyprus should become. The Greeks advocated for Enosis—union with Greece—while the Turks sought Taksim—division of the island between Greece and Turkey—but most members of each community certainly would've preferred the situation to be resolved peacefully. What they got was two decades of civil and political strife culminating in invasion and forced partition.

On 21 July, Nicholson reported on the large-scale evacuation under United Nations protection of foreign nationals from Cyprus, some of whom were interviewed the next day by Mark Andrews as they arrived in London. On 22 July, Nicholson reported on the weekend's fighting in Nicosia, and shared the dramatic story of how he and camera operators Alan Downes and Robert "Bob" Hammond were caught in crossfire before being saved by a UN patrol. Lastly, on 22 July, Chris Wain reported from a Turkish refugee camp near the British military base in Episkopi. Wain saw the camp as a reminder not only of the human cost of the conflict but also of the depth of British involvement in the Cyprus crisis.

'1974: Turkish Invasion of Cyprus Captured Up Close'
On This Day 1974, Turkish forces invaded Cyprus by sea and by air.
ITN's Michael Nicholson was at the scene when Turkish paratroopers dropped onto the open plains near Gönyeli, on the road between the capital, Nicosia, and the coastal city of Kyrenia.
Turkey's invasion came five days after the Greek-backed Cypriot coup d'état on 15 July, and led to the partition of Cyprus along the UN-monitored Green Line, which still divides Cyprus between the south and the Turkish-occupied north to this day.

In 1974, Turkish troops invaded the Mediterranean island after Greece staged a brief coup five days earlier. Turkish Cypriots in the North, view today's anniversary as a liberation from the Greek-speaking majority. Greek Cypriots in the south view the date as a catastrophe that led to mass displacement.

On 20 July 1974, Turkish forces invaded Cyprus by sea and air. Codenamed Operation Atilla, the attack came five days after the Greek-sponsored Cypriot coup d'état on 15 July, and led to the partition of Cyprus along the UN-monitored Green Line, which still divides Cyprus between the south and the Turkish-occupied north to this day.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the invasion, ITN Archive presents a number of reports covering the first three days of the conflict. ITN's Michael Nicholson was at the scene on 20 July when Turkish paratroopers dropped onto the open plains near Gönyeli, on the road between the capital, Nicosia, and the coastal city of Kyrenia. Meanwhile, ITN's Christopher Wain reported on the first day of fighting in Nicosia, from inside the besieged Ledra Palace Hotel.

Cyprus, an island steeped in history and conflict, has long been the stage for violence as Turkish Cypriots faced persecution and genocidal attacks for decades. The year 1974 saw the dawn of a new era with Turkiye’s Peace Operation, a decisive moment that carved the island into two separate states and ended decades of unrest.
On the 50th anniversary of Türkiye’s Peace Operation TRT World’s new documentary embarks on a journey through Cyprus's contentious history, examining the roots of the conflict and contemplating the prospects for reconciliation.

#ColdWar #Cyprus #Greece #Turkey
